It became a Category 4 this morning. Rita is going to get bigger, and I hope people get out of her way. I live in San Antonio so I should be save, but then again, a Category 5 is very big...

Do they have problems with Flooding in the Woodlands/Montgomery County area? Is that a good place to sit out the storm?

It's too close to Houston. try Huntsville, NAC, Lufkin, or college station.

You guys need to get out, it'll be upgraded to tonight to a cat 5, right now it is a very high cat 4 with maxium sustained winds at 150mph...pressior is about 10 desimals above Katrina at 920, pressior is expected drop, to make this the most powerful hurricane to hit the American cost.
A cat 4 hurricane is expected to hit galviston once every 77 years, there are no stats for Cat 5 in texas

Its not gonnna hit New Orleans, but it will hit texas hard. I am in San Antonio and they WERE predicting 50-55 mph winds and 6-10 inches of rain for us here, but that was when the windspeeds were around 135. Now they are greater than 165, so we might have some more wind here. They are saying to expect power outages for an un-known amount of time. I am praying for everyone that lives south of me, because they are going to get hit HARD.

No it won't, its going to very minor. Its already like almost past New Orleans and heading to between Galveston and Corpus Christi. If its a Category 5 like Katrina all the way to the end of the oceans than most likely going to have a category 1 or tropical storm, seriously... Forcaster expect that we will have more than 60 mph here and 3-5 inches of rain so it won't be so much flooded here because Tyler is mostly hilly not too much but some places will be flooded.

We got the last 2 cases of water at the HEB. We got lunch meat that doesn't need to be refrigerated, bread, and canned soup. We have a grill but if the power goes out, all the meat in the freezers will go bad, so we can grill canned goods. yay:( . We didn't feel like waiting in line for gas because we had a full tank already. There were cars waiting in lines stretched through the whole HEB parking lot for gas (HEB gas station at end of parking lot), because it is cheapest at HEB right now.

I get off work at 7pm Friday and am leaving directly and heading to Shreveport. Not because of the storm though. After watching the news they kind of acted like it may be starting to storm a little by then. So if you all read about a "chubby bald redneck looking fella in a tan GMC tried to dodge a tree in the road and ended up on top of this barn" you'all all know it was me.
And somebody can put a memorial on this board in my honor or something.
Really though, I dont expect bad weather going over. Coming back may be different though. I will make it a point to come here and report anything I might happen to notice on the way. I go 79 all the way to Shreveport.
I want to thank of y'all for posting the store situations and what not. I dont watch local news at all. I will make it a point to fill up on the way to work in the morning.
I would offer the farm house (in shreveport) to evacuees but we've already got Katrina victims there.. The barn is big and well made though..haha.

Everyone here in Waco is just preparing for power outages. I went to WalMart and that place was CRAZY!!! WalMart and HEB were both out of water. The shelves with canned goods were getting bare. There were even completely sold out of D batteries and running low on candles. No Coleman fuel stuff, people buying ice like crazy...that kinda stuff. Oh and we did fill up with gas...the lines were pitiful there, too! You never know...we could be going to extreme but I'd rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it! Our neighborhood is very hilly so we flood with just heavy rain any day.
Just curious about our Lufkin friends...what is everyone doing there? I've spoke to the in-laws there and they're not really concerned??? Is that the same for everybody or are you guys stocking up and taking precautions, too?

The forecasts have the storm moving to the east. The 10 PM central forecast had the eye to the west of Houston, probably around Lake Jackson and on it's way towards Dallas. 6 hours later, the forecast had the eye around Baytown and headed up East Texas into Arkansas. I think the forecast in 2 1/2 hours will have it even further to the east and do some more damage in Western Louisiana. Right now, Beaumont and Port Arthur will get it hard and worse than Houston.

We were down in P.A. 3 times over the summer, seemed pretty exposed to something like this, and with all the refineries around there, seems like the potential for a serious mess... Are you still there? From traffic reports on the news last night, looks like it will take you all day to get anywhere... I would guess straight up to Lufkin is your only choice by now.

Man this hurricane thing is getting serious. Living and working east of San Antonio has been easy from a traffic standpoint. Eleven minutes to work every morning. This morning, 35 minutes! The folks from the coast are really getting out of town. I hear people from Port lavaca can only get motel rooms in El Paso! Think about that for a Thursday drive. If the traffic is as bad that far west....they are in for a long weekend.

My family left Victoria this morning at around 8am on 87 I think. They said traffic was up but that it was moving at a good pace towards SA. Victoria is under a mandatory evacuation as well. Everyone should be out by 7pm tonight. The traffic will probably be worse as the day goes on.

Depending where you're departing from and what time it is, that sure seems like it is way out of the way. I'm looking at IH 10 out of my office window right now and it appears to be moving at a normal pace. I think rush hour is when it gets compounded. Remember this, no matter how you get here, you are going to be in traffic. If I were coming from katy, I would only consider IH 10.

They took some back-country roads until they got to College Station and then went up to Waco, to FW, and then I-20 to Midland. They'll be arriving here in Midland in about an hour and a half. They have a place to stay, but believe it or not, there are no hotel rooms in Midland! Apparently there are no rooms in Odessa or even Ozona either...that's nuts. Some people are pushing their cars to conserve gas and the temperture on at least one rear view mirror was reading 114 degrees! Now all of these people can sympathize with the La. folks who were stranded on IH10 in NO. I think after this season IH 10 needs to be renumbered. It's starting to get too close to home now.

Statement as of 1:00 pm EDT on September 22, 2005
Rita appears to have reached its peak intensity during the past
12 hours. Hurricanes typically do not maintain such high intensity
for a long time. Initial intensity estimate is 145 knots. Although
some fluctuations in intensity are likely during the next day or
two...due to eyewall replacement cycles...an overall gradual
weakening trend should take place. This weakening trend is based on
lower oceanic heat content along the forecast track and increasing
shear. Neverthereless...Rita is expected to make landfall as a
dangerous hurricane of at least a category three intensity.
Rita has been moving toward the west-northwest or 295 degrees at 8
knots. A strong high pressure system currently centered over
northern Texas/Oklahoma is expected to shift eastward allowing Rita
to take a more northwesterly and northerly track. The eastward
shift of the high is forecast by all global models...resulting in
track guidance consistently turning the hurricane toward the
northwest and north toward the Upper-Texas or the western Louisiana
coasts. After landfall...steering currents are expected to weaken
and the cyclone could meander for a couple of days in the vicinity
of northeastern Texas...producing heavy rains.
Based on the forecast track and wind radii...hurricane warnings have
been issued at this time from Port O'Connor Texas to Morgan City
Louisiana. Tropical storm warnings are in effect on either side of
the Hurricane Warning.

That's Houston, ch. 2. They are projecting the eye just west of Bmont right now -and one model shows the eye way over at Layafatte. apparently Bmont and PA are really scrambling right now -- no gas, gridlock and minimal fed. emergency help around - all help is over in Houston - wow. Let's pray these folks get out. PA could get slammed hard.

"Rita should still make landfall as a large, intense, major hurricane with impacts extending well away from the center. Hurricane force winds extend 60 miles away from the center and tropical storm force winds extend 205 miles from the center. Landfall is possible early Saturday along the Texas or southwest Louisiana coast. Residents and tourists in locations such as Port O'Connor, Bay City, Lake Jackson, Freeport, Galveston, Texas City, Houston, Beaumont-Port Arthur, Cameron and Lake Charles should ALL prepare for a very dangerous landfalling major hurricane. Rainfall across southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana may exceed 12 inches. Squalls of heavy rain and gusty winds will reach as far east as New Orleans."

We were going to evacuate, but we couldn't get out of Katy. This morning when we planned to go, it was just horrendous. Total parking lot on I-10, Grand Parkway, 36 - everything. We were trying to go to a friends house in LaVernia. We are still in Katy. We didn't even leave the house and at this time, I think traffic is even worse.
My parents, who are in their 80's, were going to head there also. There was no way. They simply can't sit in the car without going to the bathroom for that long. They live 17 miles east of us in Spring Branch and it would have taken 6 to 8 hours to just get to Katy at that point. It's not any better now. I think what is happening on the Freeways, and even the backroads now, is far more dangerous to them than riding out a hurricane in their house.
I can't begin to emphasize how very bad the traffic is. All the people from the coastal areas that left last night & headed west are here in Katy now, stuck on I-10 and 99 and 36. It's taking 12 hours or more. The heat is terrible. People are dehydrating in their cars and they can't get off the freeway to go to the bathroom. We walked up to HEB around 3:30pm and met a couple taking a breather in the empty CVS parking lot. They left their home in Beaumont at 3:00am and this is as far as they'd gotten. They said cars were stalled out and overheating and people were running out of gas. When they got to the construction at I-10 and the Beltway, they had plenty of time to get out of their cars and use the nasty porta-potties there. Then there are the people stopped in parking lots who can't go any further because of being sick or having a car that's out of gas or broken down. If the hurricane hits while they are still there, it will be very, very, very bad.
It doesn't matter if Gov. Rick says the evacuation is going well. Yes, people evacuated, but they can't get to where they want to go.

I could be in the same boat as you. My first week here, we sent back a bunch of Keesler/Louisiana/Mississippi people. They went to where some of their relatives evacuated to. With the storm stalling out over land, it could flood out San Antonio, Longview, or West Monroe and other places in between. At the ripe young age of 44 I'm about to experience my first major hurricane. Rita is about 10 hours from landfall and appears she'll be crashing in between Galveston and Beaumont/Port Arthur. My prayers are really with the Port Arthur area, they are far less equipped to take this storm. Hard to imagine the field we played on two weeks ago may be buried under sea water.
It appears the eyewall will come very, very close to Lufkin and we'll get heavy winds and rain. My only real personal concerns are a couple of big oak trees near my back yard and getting flood water into my office. The family will hunker down and stay safe.
The uneasy feeling you get in times like this is eery. Our fair city of 35,000 appears to have doubled in population. There are cars, RV's, trucks everywhere with their hoods up, folks have crept through and just run out of gas. Today, Friday, Sept. 23rd, we are hoping/praying that fuel trucks make it here and get these folks up and northward before nightfall. Of course, this scenario plays out in a dozen other Texas cities as well.
I have a feeling my next post will find me with a newfound respect for hurricanes. Football seems a million miles away right now.

No my grandparents passed away........I was about same age also when my grandpa passed away.... 16.........we used to have a great time on the lake doing trot lines and fishing when we would visit........and would ride bikes everywhere. That is where I learned to gut/clean fish...my grandpa had all the stuff outside.....not too far from the house. Good times definitely......stuff you won't forget.......I don't really remember where they lived exactly because I haven't been there for a long time...but, they both lived in almost like a community that was just a circle....most of them were cabin homes that people would stay on vacation..and some is where people actually lived......then my grandmother passed away...and later on down the line my grandpa remarried and they bought a brand new house right on the lake....two story house.........both houses were on the lake but the first one you had to walk across the street and behind other people's houses. I remember all the roads there were dirt and sand. WHen you would drive down the roads they were covered with woods and could see the road runners running around........I think everyone knew everyone there.......it was so small. We used to talk to everyone when we were riding the old school bikes everywhere.

I remember going shopping with them and it was in the big city of Pineland.
Man I feel old......
Wow...that's sounds really similar to where my Grandmother lived. I think the name of the little community was Hickory Hollow...or something like that. And I would ride my little Huffy with the banana seat everywhere around there. We probably saw each other...When did you used to visit there? In the '80's? If so ..I'm certain we passed each other on those bikes..hahahaha
The community was made of mostly older folks...with (like you mentioned) some people on vacation...I just remember it was really close to the lake...like walking distance...and we went down there every day to check the trot lines and look for arrowheads. That is pretty cool centex.

All I remember is you would drive and the highway would come to a curve...but before that you would see the sign Broaddus...but on the curve you would stay on the right and go down the dirt road. We used to go in the 80's........I'm 31 now.........they moved from College Station to there....so probably from 2nd grade through 6th grade............I remember kids being there but I don't remember any names. I do remember one house there that we thought was cool and my sister stayed the night over there. It was an A frame house...and the loft you had to climb up a ladder.

That is crazy.......we probably did...........and it was probably the same place because I don't think there would be many there like that.
It was a circle dirt road.....with houses on both sides..but they were sort of spread out....I remember in my grandparents front yard they had the big ditches by the road so it wouldn't flood. ......u don't remember an A frame house?
Also there was a boat ramp right down the road in the same community......my cousins would go also and they were the same age about. We usually all went in the summer.
Our last names are Bishop.
When I go to my dad's i'll have to find some photos from there and scan them and show you.

That is the craziest thing in the world...........
I can describe stuff in their house to a tee..............you know how old people are ....they got all the old stuff in there. Antique phone.....plastic clear mats on the floor.........in the back room you had to walk through one of the bedrooms...it had an old school fold out couch......and alot of photos in there.....but it was like down a few steps from the bedroom that you walk through........in the kitchen they had an island like thing around it where we would sometimes sit down and snack.......they didn't have a garage..it was like a car port......but it was just for a single car I think........there was a little garden kind of in the front but on the side of the yard going more towards that boat ramp.......they were really great people.......and my grandpa would have us rolling sometimes......he also played the guitar and we would all sing......he was a wrestler I think back in his day...for some league or something.....like professional.........and he graduated from Texas A&M.

That's the same house dude. I was reading your previous post and picturing a car port...and I was about to ask if they had a garden...I remember that for some reason. I think they used to trade stuff with my Grandmother...And my Grandmother used to take them figs off of the fig tree behind her house. I know because I used to get my butt whipped for messing with that tree.
I remember a maroon car...maybe like an old Dodge 78,79ish...I don't know why I remember that...My Grandmother had a big chocolate lab named Toro that always roamed the neighborhood. I'm gonna dig through some old pictures tonight...I know there are some from Broaddus in there...I will e-mail them to you if I find some.

I wish I could remember the kids names we hung out with......there weren't many kids there so you would think I can remember...but it's been a long long time...so I just remember bits and pieces........the bike that was there was really super old....and way too big for us but I would ride that sucker.... that was all there really was to do there. I might have took my bike a few times from home..........
And yeah they used to cook old people food...I remember having to eat it....and wasn't too happy about it. And, I remember if we didn't eat it it was saved for later. haha
The car they had was like a Buick LeSabre? It had a CB in it..and also a compass in it. (stuff like that you can't forget) But, there might have been a car there like you described.....I don't remember........they had those hummingbird feeders....and I remember tons and tons of those dirt dawbers flying around everywhere.
Also not too far from there my uncle had a house with a pool that we would go swimming at. You could see the lake because the pool was right there on the shore almost.

I think Lufkin's OK for the most part. We've spoke to our family and friends a few times. DH's dad actually got his power back on last night but the ones in Diboll hadn't yet. Sounds like they did get a lot of wind (trees down, signs blown, power lines down, roofs damaged, that kind of stuff...and some did have worse) but I think that's the general concensus. From what I can see in photos on The Lufkin Daily News site and the local tv KTRE, lots of businesses were damaged and will have quite a bit of repairs to make before re-opening. I haven't heard of any fatalities yet and hope it stays that way. Also, no major flooding from what I've heard. I know they'll all be busy today clearing roads and limbs/trees etc and waiting for their electricity. I am assuming most are still out of power. We were quite surprised that my fil got his back on so soon but they live on 69N so maybe things weren't so bad there. Anyway, that's all we know...thought I'd share since we do have so many members from Lufkin.
Glad to heare Katy is ok. We're very thankful that the damage everywhere wasn't as bad as it could have been. Some people may be criticizing for those in some areas over reacting but I still believe it's much better to be safe and prepared then careless and unprepared.

Just got our electricity back on but most of the neighborhood is still without power. Our electricity went out about 6:30am yesterday and just came back on at around 3pm today. Ours was one of the last three to go out in the neighborhood and two houses to the left of us never lost power. Other then that the rest of the neighborhood is still without power. We had the tops of trees blow off but did not hit the house or the cars. I have seen several business with some major damage and one of the churches had about 1/3 of the matal roof come off of the old sanctuary and sunday school wing. Obviously there are a lot of downed trees and power lines in different areas of town and several trees have landed on houses and cars. I don't know of any fatalities so far. I do know that it could have been worse if the storm had kept on the path that was originally predicted. We were fortunate in that aspect but it was not good for the people in Beaumont, Port Arthur and then up in to Jasper. Thanks to everyone on this board who has shown their concern and thanks for all the prayers.

Thanks and LOL about your crazy husband. We were always similar though. LOL I was driving my wife nut's too!! I always try to bring comedy in the situation even when it is scary times and it pisses her off. I was running around the house screaming HOOOONKER Dowwwwwn!! in a really country east texan accent. LOL I got that from the radio during the hurricane. You should of heard some of those people that called in?? Some were so hillarious and i did not realize we had that many hillbilly people around us?? Maybe some of the east texas stereotypes are true?? LMAO One said i am in down town Chester and we have already been through of couple of cases beer because there is nothing better to do. :D And that was the women and the children!! LOL That was just 1 of a million hillarious calls. It did keep me entertained during boring no electricity times. If my kids ask me to play to the playstation 2 one more time i was going to explode. I am like what do you not understand about no electricity?? We had to go to my parents. LOL

Yeah some of those calls to the radio station were ridiculous. It was worse then seeing the Aggie fans Whooping it up every 3 minutes during the game last Thursday on FSN. I could not believe some of the nonsense. "Uh, yeah, I am calling from Corrigan, um could you tell me what the weather is doing over here?" I mean if you are in Corrigan you should know what the weather is like there. The guys at the station are in Lufkin so you should be telling them what is going on. I mean people really did not have a clue. I could go on and on about some of the stupid comments and questions that were asked. But one of the worst ones was from a man who said his wife was named Rita and she was dissapointed that the storm did not come ashore as a Cat. 4 Hurricane. How stupid is that? There are some twisted people out there.

You know me ...I tried to bring comedy into a very gloomy situation...
First off the weather lady on KTRE needs to be fired.
We watched her forecast on the internet.
I told my wife ..."this chic is begging for drinking game in her honor"
She must have said ..ummmmm...and ....and ummmm....100 times in that forecast.
I was LMAO...every time she said it I yelled "Drink!"
You would be tore up trying to keep up with her.
Then we watched good ol' Shep on Fox News...He was in Beaumont...and Hurricane Rita was whippin' Shep's ***. Dude went through like 10 baseball caps...
Then they would flip back to homeboy that was broadcasting from Klute.
He was dry as a bone.
I told my wife...If I was Shep...I would have been sayin' "OOOOOh hell nawww...how does this dude get desert duty...and I'm in the middle of a typhoon?"
I had her crackin' up all night.
And Geraldo Rivera...
Boy has his career gone south...
He was in PA during the hurricane...
I said " Hey Geraldo...why don't you stroll on over to Vidor again...so they can beat the brakes off of you like they did back in the day"
I was really nervous though....I was worried about all of my family and all of you guys. Glad to see everybody is okay. Welcome back!

No joke about KTRE's infamous Jene' Young. I normally don't point out people's mistakes that often because we all make them but she has to be the worst I have ever seen come through Lufkin. Believe me I hate having to see and hear her give the forecast. That poor girl messes up at least 5-10 times every time she gives a forecast and sometimes 15 times. She always fumbles through her forecast, turns two to three words into one word, and can't transition from the other anchor's comments into her brief weather update before the commercial break. I really have a hard time believing that she is still allowed to give a forecast. I am sure she is a good person and all that but it is very obvious that being a TV Weatherwoman is not her calling. Maybe she is a great meteorologist and does good away from a camera but she is not made for TV.

Well there goes my theory! I was telling Wide to give her a break...thinking maybe she had been up all night and was just exhausted or something. I was hoping for her sake (and the sake of those that have to watch her on a daily basis) that she was normally better than that. Don't worry, I have no clue how long she's been there but they usually don't stay around KTRE long.
