Yea--guess he didn't notice that Bastrop just voted to build a second high school and will therefore be dropping back to 4A when it's completed (like Hays). It'll also be interesting to see how he connects with the kids. He wasn't so successful at Austin LBJ before he came to Westlake, so we'll have to see if he can connect to a group of kids that are probably a mixed demographic between those two communities.
That being said, I've admired Bastrop for their determination and fight, and quite frankly it has seemed like their coaching has not been on the same level as the better schools in our district. They've always been a team to be taken seriously, and Schroeder's involvement will just step that up a notch.

According to an article he never coached at LBJ or was a coordinator/head coach until he started working at Westlake.
www.statesman.com I think he will be good for Bastrop.

yeah, never was at LBJ. Was an assistant at Reagan, Travis, and a Klein school before becoming assistant at Westlake, then head coach when they went 5A.
I'm sure he knows about the new high school, and probably will embrace it.

2nd Greatest Texas High school football coach ever IMO behind Todd Dodge. I know yall are gonna say that i have a what have you done for me lately approach with this, but look at what he did and Westlake and try and argue.

Actually the Statesman article says he coached at Pierce (a local middle school) and Lanier High School before becoming Westlake's offensive coordinator. I've seen interviews with him in the past where he characterizes his coaching success prior to coming to Westlake as pretty dismal--that he was ready to leave the business. I'm just pointing out that Bastrop is going to be a different demographic from Westlake or Southlake Carroll--not better or worse, but different. My comment wasn't directed to what has he done for us lately (although the comments yesterday that he left to watch his son play at A & M don't wash with his own comments at the time), but rather how well he will relate to a different setting. And I taught both in Westlake and a high school neighboring to Bastrop, so I have had some personal experience with the difference. Some teachers are successful in any environment, and some might be successsful in one or the other.

Oh and about the 5A thing? When we had an election over whether to build a second high school, he let it be known that if that bond issue passed, he'd probably leave (as did some other extracurricular activity sponsors) to stay with a 5A school

Actually Bastrop voted to build a NEW high school (and new stadium) not another high school so this fits right into the plan Coach Schroeder has always envisioned and that is one BIG pool to hand pick the 40 best athletes to field a highly successful football dynasty!!!

@ 60, how long will he coach in order to build his program? It will be interesting to see how his staff fills out. How many of the current coaches will be retained and how many will he try to bring in? Will he reach out to previous coaches he's worked with on other staffs? Domino effect could be interesting.

Gordon Wood doesn't make your top two? Your "ever" doesn't account for very long.

No, that is not true. I talked to a coach from Bastrop, and there will be another HS opening in 2010. They already have a name for it, and school colors, etc.
There will be 2 High schools in Bastrop. (Unless the football coach I talked to was wrong);)

Yeah the coach is wrong cuz I know city council people that say otherwise, plus Schroeder wants it that way so he gets what he wants!!!

Agreed. Would anyone at Westlake leave to go there because of an alliance to Schroeder? And I know that some of his old staff is at Hays Lehman.
Could be interesting.

This link doesn't make it clear if it is a new HS for the old Bastrop High, or a new high school in addition to Bastrop HS. The one thing that is puzzling is the size of the new HS. It is not very big. Bastrop currently has an enrollment of about 2,300, and if they say they are growing, then why build another HS that will be too small in 3 years.
But I will say again, that the football coaches in Bastrop have told me that it is for new 'new' HS (in addition to the current Bastrop HS)
But I will also say again. That they could be mistaken.

Well I stand corrected, guess the dude claiming city council status was a liar (umm image that a politician that lies......) anyway I called and the Executive Director of Community Services/Communications' secretary stated that there will be 2 high schools and most likely they will fall to 4A at both schools for a couple of years...........
At least we get to see how good Schroeder really is this year in 5A with not much time to prepare!!!

Where will that put those two Bastrop schools then. As far as re-alignment goes? Not sure if they would get put with the 4A AISD schools, Elgin, Manor??
I also heard that Del Valle might be coming up to 5A. (Along with Lake Travis)
And that San Marcos was a shoe-in to go back down to 4A.
Although Bastrop will still be 5A for one more re-alignment at least.
Could make the AISD/Westlake district a little more interesting.
I would think if alot of that happens, that Seguin would get bumped back to San Antonio.

Yeah, Del Valle and Lake Travis will likely take the spots of San Marcos and Seguin in the next alignment. But that's only if the UIL doesn't create the Div. 1 and 2 prior to the alignment like it has proposed.

The only trophies theyd be putting in that case are at the most 3rd place district trophies and maybe a bi-district playoff trophy. Otherwise Westlake, Austin High and others will continue to dominate their district. He should've taken the Cedar Park job when he had the chance. His ego kills him.

I understand how Westlake will always be a challenge, they've been tough almost every year since the 80's. But Austin High & Cedar Park should'nt even be in the same paragraph with Westlake. Bastrop will own Austin High & Cedar Park with Schroeder at the controls.

Bastrop is solid, no doubt, and will definitely improve with an established Coach Schroeder. But Coach Halbrook was a very good coach also, and Bastrop has been good for a while. (last year not withstanding)
But Austin High swept Bastrop on every level last year. And in fact, I don't think that Bastrop scored a point against Austin High on any level. The varsity game was 34-0, and it wasn't that close.
So I don't know about Bastrop 'owning' Austin High.
