Swim coach accused of having sex with student
Carroll ISD: 17-year-old girl reported relationship, police say
11:38 PM CDT on Tuesday, May 15, 2007
By HOLLY YAN / The Dallas Morning News
hyan@dallasnews.com
A 26-year-old swim coach for the Carroll Independent School District was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of having sexual relations with a student.
Byron Eugene Coyle was arrested near his home in Keller and faces a charge of improper relationship between educator and student, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Bail was set at $25,000.
Keller police learned Tuesday morning that a 17-year-old girl "reported she had a sexual relationship, which began in March of 2007 with her high school swim coach," Keller police Lt. Brenda Slovak said in a written statement.
Mr. Coyle, who could not be reached for comment, is accused of breaking a Texas law that criminalizes sexual relationships between teachers and students even if a student has reached the state's consensual age of 17 and agrees to the relationship.
Proponents of the law, which took effect in 2003, have said that even older teenage students shouldn't have sexual relations with teachers, especially because teachers have power over them. Opponents say the law should have different provisions for different age groups and factor in whether students consent to the relationships.
Several similar cases have received media attention in the past year. Ronny Lee Yates, a 35-year-old Cleburne High School assistant coach and teacher, was arrested in January on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.
Last May, 25-year-old Amy McElhenney was arrested on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student from Hebron High School in Carrollton. A Denton County grand jury declined to indict Ms. McElhenney, a former Miss Texas contestant whose case made national headlines.

who cares! if she agreed to it, whats it matter! stop fussin about teachers getting jiggy with the students, you know how many of my teachers i would have nailed if i had the chance:p Then again why bother reporting it, seems like she agreed to it, no (are-aye-pee-eee) or anything. Probably some young hussy that wants attention and pity.

I suppose it would be a bit more perplexing if it were your daughter, or someone you knew. There use to be such a place as "safe havens"....not so much anymore.

This is not a good thing. It's one thing if a 26 year old and an 18 year old are attracted to one another and start dating after graduation - that happens. It's another thing altogether for a 26 year old to seduce a 17 year old into sex, particularly a coach/athlete relationship.

I think you'd be surprised how many times it's the other way around.

It doesn't make it any more right, or any less painful for all involved.

You can't tell from the story that he seduced her. That is speculation.
It sounds like it was consensual to me.

The point is a teacher is suppose to be a little more mature than that...we hope our kids are at school for purposes other than this..don't we?

You're absolutely right, but it takes two to tango, and the girl is every bit as much to blame. Now-a-days I'd say more than half of high school JUNIORS could pass as women in their early 20's, by how they dress, how much make up they were, how they act, and to a 26 year old man fresh out of college these youngs girls aren't much different to those they were surrounded by in college. Yes the teacher needs to know thir responsibility to not get involved in situations like this, but I can definitely see how easily it could be for a 26 year old male to be seduced by a 17 year old girl. Not saying that that happened in this instance, but I know it has happened in previous instances.

I live in Southlake, believe me I understand the temptation, but life is full of choices and we depend on our teachers to help kids understand how to make good choices. It starts at home, but we hope it doesn't get corrupted at school!

I was giving two of many possible scenarios. The coach obviously made a gross error in judgement, and he is obviously human, but he should have made the "right" decision long before the heat of the moment happened.
I don't know what transpired, but a teacher - especially a coach - cannot allow that to happen. Wait until she turns 18 and graduates - or pay the price.

I think he should lose his job....but I don't think he should go to jail or anything because she is of legal age and it was consensual. It would be a totally different story if she was 16. In that case, I would agree to a jail sentence, etc

Yeah, I agree that he should be fired.
I just don't agree that he should be jailed, etc because she was of legal age being 17 and it was consensual.
I think losing his job is punishment enough. And if the parents of this girl feel any different then they should have done a better job at raising their daughter. I doubt she's an angel like the want to believe.

Their lives (coaches/teachers) are in shambles to say the least as a result of this. It is not a road you want to take if you hope to have a career.

Again it's one of those gender specific things that liberals will argue for. What these people do not realize is that the laws of common decency in our society takes into account gender. What can I say. It's everybody's natural instinct to protect women and children.
While no laws were broken, technically, there is a trust that was violated and the perpetrator must be held accountable.
Getting back to gender. If the sexes were reversed, would society in general approach the issue with a lot more leniency? More than likely. But we cannot help that.

There are a lot of jokes about that, floatin around, Cav Dad. I mean, if WHEN I was 17, there were a few older female teachers that I WANTED to stay after school with!
You hear about it, but yes, it seems the more sensational stories involve young women, and older men. The older women, younger men hardly seem to make a wave. Is it no big deal, or does it just not happen?
I think we know the answer to that one.

How come people 'kiss-and-tell' so much nowadays?
I wouldn't trust a teenager to keep a secret like that. She was probably bragging about it to her girlfriends and a parent overheard at a slumber party.
Dumb guy.

What do liberals have to do with it? No one is in here blaming it on liberals. Are you calling me liberal because I feel he should be fired and not jailed?
I'm not liberal but I find it funny when posters blame something on a political party when no one else has even brought that up.

I didn't even read your post so it was not a response to anybody specific. It wasn't meant to be a political statement. I guess I was just pre empting the inevitable gender argument that I'm sure will come up eventually.

Being an ex Carroll swimmer, I know the parties involved, and it is a sad situation. This is not the first time Byron tried to seduce a swimmer, but first time it worked, to my knowledge. I have known about this for 5 days now, and I'm 99.9999999999% sure I know who reported this. I hate when things like this happen.

the roles have been reversed in this situation before. i can remember a female teacher a few years back that got fired and i think is on parole for having relations with a guy at her school. The only difference I'm seeing when its a male teacher as opposed to a female teacher, is that when its the female teacher being accused the teachers union jumps all over it and tries to protect her. This doesn't seem to happen nearly as much as when its a male teacher.
I also remember last year a girl accused one of her teachers of this, but was completely lying about the situation. She was mad because he wouldnt give her the grade she wanted

I don't care how appealing she was, it's something you just don't do. When you are in a position of authority over someone, you don't sleep with them, even if they want too. It's BS to say that she seduced him, the burden is incumbent upon the adult in the situation to have the self control not to sleep with his students.
It show a lot about his character. If he was really too weak willed to resist the come-ons of a seventeen year old swimmer, he is not someone who can be trusted around teenagers.

What I'm about to say has nothing to do with this situation, but, it does have to do with a girl from Southlake.
First off, I have a girlfriend that I love very much. Well, this girl, up until 3 weeks ago, wanted me to "give her the business", if you know what I mean. Off top, the girl is bad; blonde hair, blue eyes with an a** that looks like the back of a Ford F350 pick-up truck. I never showed the girl any love because I didn't want to do my girl wrong, but, she did quite a bit of pursuing of me. This girl looks every bit of 22 or 23, and she'd come up to my job (Gaylord Texan) alot because her sister works there, and I'd see her all the time. Like I said, she looks every bit of 22 or 23, and, well, to make a long story short, I'm glad I didn't try to hit it. She told me she was 22, and I found out that she is actually 7 years, I REPEAT, 7 YEARS YOUNGER then the age of 22.
Temptation is the devil, but you gotta have the willpower and the maturity to say no. Now, I wasn't tempted at all, but, I'm just speaking in general about how men should handle themselves in situations like that.
