View Full Version : Sandies are getting overlooked

As a former player from 1986, I was very happy for the boy's big win this past Saturday over Permian. Permian is a and always has been a good program. However it seems to me like everyone including this site's ranking system is completely looking over the Panhandle's Powerhouse, the Sandies. The season is still young, but do not be suprised to see Coach D and the boys at the end of the road chasing the prize. GO SANDIES!

IMHO, the team we played this past Friday is one of the best Sandie teams since the 92 squad that made it to the semis. They're nothing fancy, and probably need things to fall just right, but they could make some noise come playoff time.

Would the Sandies likely be DI or D2.
Is a Sandie a Crab?...I just keep thinking of crabs.

A "Sandie" is short for Sandstorm--their mascot logo is a sand storm that looks like a tornado with eyes and a growling face.
BigDaddy, I know you are proud that AHS beat Permian, but remember this is not the same Permian team you remember from back in your playing days in 1986. I think Amarillo High can start garnering some respect if they beat Midland High this week, but I'm not sure how you can say the Sandies are being overlooked when the teams they have beaten this year so far are:
Canyon Randall--a weak 4A team
Palo Duro--another 4A team, not as weak as Randall, but then again the Sandies only won 14-10
Pampa--another 4A team
Permain--a team which went winless on district last year, and while they are getting back on track, is still not the Mojo of yesteryear
I think the AHS probably makes the playoffs this year, but I don't think any of the other region 1 playoff potential teams are shaking in their boots yet!

Everytime I see "Sandies" I think about my 10th grade history teacher.. Ms. Sandy. Good teacher. Had a "spit while talking" problem. And she was B I G.
Thought I'd share that since I have to keep looking at this thread.

D2 - Both Amarillo schools are the smallest schools in 2-5A

I almost eliminated the Sandies from contending, but pulled them off the pile. They've played 4A schools, but took care of business. They still might make noise in the playoffs and district will tell the story about their season.

I know Little SWC folks who passionately refer to Amarillo as those "da** Sandies" because they really don't like having to play them in the first round because it's usually always a hard fought game. I've got an eye on Amarillo and want to see what they do in district.

KT2000 here...
I was at the game, and it was nice to see some high school football this weekend after all. It looked like Amarillo didn't have their regular starter going at QB in this game and it showed. They had great chances to hit deep passes, but didn't connect. The Sandies defense had no answer for Baron Batch. They played him well for most of the third quarter, but other than that, Batch was picking up big chunks of yardage on every carry.
The Sandies will make the playoffs if they get the QB Vaughan back in the starting line up. Midland needs to improve their defense if they want to make it in 3-5A. If Amarillo connects on a few wide open passes they had then the game is much more entertaining. Also, the Sandies were able to find gaps in the Midland defense off tackle. However, the Dawg offense looks to have a good dual threat option from the backfield with the QB Roseberry and Batch that will give district teams something to think about. Roseberry was off and on as a passer.

I couldn't agree more. Midland got lucky that their receivers dropped the ball 4-5 times throughout the course of the game.
