Does anyone know when it will be? Or if it's already been played?

Westlake does not do spring football, hence no spring game.

What's the deal on that? An extra week of two a days prior to the season start, right?

I gotta admit, I'm very suprised they took that option. They are successful, so maybe it doesn't matter.

Westlake did spring football one time in its history, prior to the '86 season (its first in 5A). They went 2-8 the following season (last losing season).

Ron Schroeder became the head coach the following year and never did spring football. Derek Long continues with that practice today. They get a lot done without pads in their 2nd period athletics class; very intense pace.

alot depends on if you play zero week. If you play zero week, and you do have spring ball, you only get one scrimmage, and only get about 6-8 days in pads until your first game. that is not alot of time to prepare.

Then factor into it school starting so late now, and thus actually getting to have 2-a-days, I think it is pretty much a wash.

I find it appauling that a 5 A fb team would not go through the spring trainning. I bet SLC does.

What about the ones you did not beat? Seguin? Maybe that extra work could have helped you out in the Final against SLC. You don't know that.

But that does hurt the recruiting process. The college coaches are on the trail at this time. If a college coach can't see you play now then you have to rely on some other way to get noticed. I think it hurts recruiting more than anything. Those kids that are not stars don't get looked at in the spring to get a chance in the fall. hey you guys don't need scholarships...So what the heck. But I do agree that you can get a bunch of stuff done in shorts. I also think that every player looks pretty good when you have shorts on.

Why, exactly, would it be appaulling that some teams don't go through spring football?

Teams that don't do spring, get to start a week earlier in the fall than the teams that don't, plus they get an extra scrimmage in the fall.

I see advantages to spring ball, but there are also advantages to not doing it.

Some teams have key players in track, or baseball, and others just prefer to get the extra week in the fall.

Some coaches would rather get the extra week of workouts after the kids have worked out, (and hopefully gotten bigger, stronger, etc) all summer long.

I like spring training, but I do understand the coaches that choose not to do it. I would be willing to bet that no team ever won a State Championshop or lost a key game because of the fact that they did or did not do spring ball. It's not like the teams that don't do spring ball, are just sitting around not working out.

And as to the point about it hurting the players recruiting chances, that is absurd. College coaches come around to look at the kids, regardless of if they are in pads or not. The majority of kids that get offered in the spring, get offered at camps.......which BTW, are with no pads.

What teams in our district go through spring ball and which ones don't?
I dont believe any school in our district made it far in track or baseball

Bowie and Westlake are still playing baseball.

Austin High had their Sprint Relay (which included 3 returning starting football players) compete at the State Track Meet.

I have no idea who did or who didn't (go through spring), I just said I understand the pluses and minuses to both trains of thought.

Seguin and Austin High both lost in the first round and Westlake barely lost to SLC at state. That's your argument? Yeah, the Chaps really needed Spring football

Westlake signed 4 kids to D-1 schools, and a college coach would much rather see game footage vs. an opponent than scrimmage rules football in the spring against JV players.

Austin High did not do spring ball this year either, by the way.

Thanks alot. I was almost over that MacArthur game, but you just haaaaaad to bring it up again. ;)

And you are right, Austin High did not do spring ball, and it did not stop Texas from offering and getting a commitment from OT, Mark Buchanan.

Are you serious? Ok. So I told you at your job I needed a presentation done by Aug 31, 2007 and I said you can do it in 18 days in May but you will think about it for two months during June and July. Also you get 21 days in August four days of research (Shorts and Helmets) with a test presentation on the 25th or 26 days in August and four of those days are done in research (Shorts and Helmets) with two practice presentations on the 17th and the 24th. Assuming your an educated person and wanted to do well on your presentation. Which would you choose?

I guess you guys will just settle for mediocrity then. Second in state and 4 d1 players. Wow what a year! Let's pat ourselves on the back for that one. Take a look at the whole picture here. Other schools are getting more reps in while you are running around in shorts. I am not saying this determines if you have a good year or not. What I am saying is Riley Dodge threw more passes and practiced more than your defense did in a year. You don't think that has something to do with it? If you don't see the benefit then you are never going to see it. I just wasted about 30 minutes of my life trying to explain it to you and that pisses me off!

First of all, you are clearly not a coach, or have ever talked to one.

You are the one that just doesn't get it. While Riley Dodge (or anyone else that does spring ball) is sitting around on August 6th, the schools that didn't do spring will be out there practicing. And they will get all the reps that the schools that did do spring did. And they will be in full pads for a solid week, before the schools that did spring will be. And with school starting so late, those schools can practice as many times or as long as they want, and not be bound by an 8-hour rule or any other time restrictions.

I understand the benefits of spring ball, but the problem is that you do not understand the benefits of not doing it.

You act like if you go through spring ball, you get extra practices in. It all evens out. You either get the practices in the spring or in the fall. One way or the other, every team is going to end up practicing about the same number of hours.

And you cannot dismiss the advantage of having two scrimmages instead of just one. Ask any coach about that.

And I am sorry that you wasted 30 minutes of your life. Although I don't understand why it took you 30 minutes to type one paragraph.;)

you don't get 21 days, if you go through spring, and play zero week.....

you get 4 days in shorts, and about 10 days in pads, (not counting your scrimmage), and that assumes you practice in full pads the day before your first game. If not, you get 9 days in full pads.......8 if you play on Thursday night.

Ok I guessed and missed it by 6. You get 15 days to prepare for your first game. http://www.uil.utexas.edu/athletics/football/
So a scrimmage is not preperation for your first game? You get six more days than a team that got 18 in the spring. Brilliant trade off! that would be +12 for the team that did spring ball genius. that is two weeks of work in pads. Are you really going to argue this?

You get 6 more days than the guys who had spring ball. They got 18 in the spring in pads. Which is the better trade off. The team in spring ball is +12 on you that did not participate. Jack***! Tell me how that evens out? You get 18 days in spring and they can start on the 13th of August. Where you start on the 6th of August and you have 4 days of shorts as well. Where do you make up the 12 days? You get a scrimmage in the spring with the 18 days. Why would you want another scrimmage? You got just as many as anyone else. Your wrong on the eight hour rule as well. Look it up. I have provided you with a link. I have no time to explain things to idiots. What is the benefit of not doing spring ball? Tell me please I would like to hear this one.

First of all, there is no need for name-calling.

Second of all, the way it evens out is in the fact that you get an extra week of 2/days. So you will get two workouts each of those days. Six days times two practices/day = 12 practices. What I was saying is that the hours will pretty much even out.

Third of all, thanks for the link, but I will state again, that there is no 8 hour rule until you are in school. It's kind of like the eligibility rule, but I digress.

Fourth of all, there is no coach in his right mind that would tell you that an intersquad scrimmage is the same as lining up against another opponent for a scrimmage. Not one.

I am sure you are an ex-football player that still lives vicariously through your HS team to try to relive your glory days, but that is not a reason to attack anyone that has a different opinion than you do. I said in my original post that I really do like spring ball, but as I have already stated in a couple of posts above on this very thread, I can understand the reasoning that some coaches have for not doing it.

And BTW, Westlake is not, (nor is any team that plays for a State Championship) a mediocre program.

People who do spring ball can also have two a days in August! You know absolutely nothing about what your talking about. Yes I live vicariously through my team. Who doesn't that truly loves the game. But I do not have a favorite team. I like to watch all games. I travel all over the state to watch good football games. I love Texas high school football. I love to support the game. So am I wrong for that? I am just trying to make a point to you that spring ball is a better deal and enlighten you on why. If you want to be narrow minded and not listen to the reasons why. Then that is ok.

You are being narrow-minded by stating the it is the better deal. We are merely saying, "to each his own". What is best practice for some, is not best practice for others.

It is obvious that SLC and others have great success using spring football. It is also obvious that Westlake and others have great success not using spring football.

Every community and it's dynamics are different.

I just understand some advantages to not doing it also.

Let's put this one to bed........truce.....

I am sure there are many other things we can find to argue about. :) Football season is still 3 months away.

Carroll does spring, has a scrimmage each week of the 4, does 2 a days in the fall and has 2 scrimmages, one with Arlington Martin and the other w/ Flower Mound. It's all good!
