I'm looking for a link to a story or some kind of write-up on the 1967 state game between Cooper/Reagan. I know it was a long time ago, but thought someone in here could find something! Thanks

I'll tell you all you need to know... the Cooper QB was in the endzone, but the zebra blew him short on the last play of the game. Game over.

I actually was able to dig a little something up. Not much, but something...

The 1967 game was a thriller. The Cougars lost by one point to then powerhouse Austin Reagan (Reagan went on to defeat Odessa Permian in the 1968 and 1970 state championship games) when the officials declined to rule a possible touchdown in favor of Cooper in the closing minutes of the game.

Before the opening kickoff, the Cougar cheerleaders led the chant, "One More Inch!" In the 1967 title game against Austin Reagan, as time was running out, quarterback Jack Mildren dove for the end zone only to come up, officials ruled, an inch short. Reagan won the game 20-19.

Here's the front page of the Sports section in Big Spring from the day after the game...

December 17th, 1967 Big Spring (http://idisk.mac.com/cboehme69-Public/1967Titlegame.pdf)

Let me see if I can find anything from Abilene or Austin...

It's funny how things work. Randy Allen was a DB (I think) and Jon Harrison was a WR on that '67 Cooper team. Randy Allen came back as the head coach at Cooper from '92-'98 and took the Coogs back to the state title game in '96. On his staff as a WR coach was Jon Harrison (who is still coaching WRs for Cooper).

Harrison must be really good because I've been very impressed with the quality of Cooper receivers since I've been following the program (since 96). It seems they have quality players out wide every season.

Coach Harrison is great and it's funny because he's one of the quietest men I have been around... not a trait commonly found amongst coaches. He's also a fine baseball coach. He's been an assistant baseball coach for as long as I can remember.

Jack Mildren, who was the QB for that Cooper team in '67, would play his college football with Jon Harrison at Oklahoma. Both would be key players for OU in '71 when they played Nebraska in the "Game of the Century".
