View Full Version : Spring Recruits
Down n' Out

I've only observed the scouts that have been attending Katy's spring practices, so I'm wondering about how other schools are doing recruit wise. So far the colleges that have sent scouts are: U of H, North Texas, A&M, UCLA, Arizona State, Navy, Army, U-Conn and a few others.
Players they are looking at:
Committed:
Aundre Dean
Eric Ball
Most likely to get offers:
Trent Hunter - DB
Ryan Doerr - P/K
Bo Levi Mitchell - QB
Terrance Avie - WR
Blain Atkins - MLB
Brad Graham - LB
Terrance Henry - DB
Brian Rowe - WR
I'm sure I missed somebody, but it looks like one of Katy's best recruiting years and the season hasn't even started.

Are you guys all out of Fudas?
Nope, Little Fuda has been playing Baseball, along with several football players that haven't been able to get in much FB practice and it looks like they could go deep in the playoff's. Our Spring Game is Tuesday.

Down, the only one you missed is DB Terrence Frederick.
So, that's 11 seniors getting looks right now. Normally, Katy doesn't have many players who fit the physical mold to go D1 but that is not the case this season. Of course, there are some players in the junior-to-be class who will be looked at as well so this is probably the most attention Katy's received since 1997 as far as the scouts are concerned.

I know Carroll is getting several of their players looked at as is Trinity. They both return experienced groups as well.
Beaumont West Brook has some absolute specimens in this class and the next. Their 15 year old running back, junior to be, Christian Michael squatted 500 pounds in their last testing. The coach said he stopped him there because he'd never seen a 15 year old squat that much before.

I couldn't say who ALL has been there, but have seen/ heard about TCU, Texas Tech, UVA, A&M, ACU, this week. Wasn't around the field much last week, so not sure who was here then.
I have no idea who they are looking at but I would hazard to guess Shaffer, Porter (current soph with offers), Amoyaw, Byrd, Pride, Lujan, and Jones. Totally a guess on my part - but those are the obvious ones.

The 2 state championships will be decided between Katy, Carroll and Trinity with Lufkin as the sleeper. Just thought I'd throw that in.

Coach Gaddis said Major Applewhite was at Lewisville today for Alabama... We've also had Louisiana Tech and some D2-D3 schools come by.
Probably for Zac Hare and Todd Spence, though I can't say for sure since I'm a lowly freshman.

Several 1A schools have visited Jesuit these past two weeks. They are looking at two juniors: Kyle Miller (TB-S / 6' 0, 185, 4.45) and Michael Brooks (DT-OL) 6' 4, 250, 4.85; and several sophomores: Brandon Haynes (OL / 6' 3, 290), Eric Tausch (OL / 6' 2, 275), Ben Donnelli (LB / 6' 2, 185, 4.7), & CJ Haley (TB / 5' 11, 170, 4.5).
Lots of 1AA "academic" schools have also been out at practice. They are looking at several juniors, including the above two and FS Hampton Hughes, DE Marcus Chitman, CB-WR Cav Koch, and DE Adam Bauer.
The Rangers have had nine practices so far, and the defense seems to be playing better than the offense. However, the offense has been without projected starting QB Brent Miller, their top returning WR Sam Wernick, and several OL. Miller & Wernick play baseball, and the OL have been injured or dealing with academic stuff.
I asked the DL Coach what schools have been by, and he told me several: Florida, Kansas, TCU, SMU, Rice, UNLV, Army, Air Force, Texas State, Colgate, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, Air Force, UTEP, and others I'm forgetting.
This is the first time Jesuit has held spring ball, and it has been fun to watch. My guess is this benefits the young players the most. The action up front between the OL & DL have been intense, and the coaches really focus on what goes on up front. I was not sold on spring ball until these past two weeks. Now, I hope they do it every spring. I only wish they had this when I or my sons were playing. Feels like August without the 100 degree temp. It was actually cool yesterday afternoon before the rain hit.

So this years Katy teams has about 11 Seniors that will probably get offers ? I guess that's D-1A & D-1AA ?
How many legit D-1A prospects does Katy have this year ?

One of the faithful will know for certain, what I know is they are bringing back aton of talent this year. The defense in loaded and their backfield is special. Should be a sensational year for the boys in red.

According to UCLA, we have 8-10. It's interesting that they come to look at one or two players and fall in love with some kid they never heard of. Then someone else comes out and re-evaluates. Then since they are in the area, they go to visit other schools and find more untapped talent. That is one of the big benefits of Spring Ball. By the time the season rolls around, the colleges have a pretty good idea of who they are interested in seeing, especially the sleepers. There's a lot of kids not getting any press, that are going to surprise come recruiting time.

Well, in my opinion. If more colleges from the Pac-10, Big East, ACC and Big-10 really spent more time scanning Texas they would find many sleepers that can be legit D-1A prospects.

Politics still plays a part...UCLA scout told me that they pretty much had to take a QB from California. Not surprising since it would probably make some people mad if Texas or other D-1 schools started taking kids from another region.

I've only been to about 1/2 the spring practices at Consol due to my travel schedule, but there's been a steady stream of scouts coming through. I talked to the guy from Baylor today. UH, UNT were there last week, some others my son told me but I wasnt' there. Tulsa told me they'd be out tomorrow or Thursday. Consol always seems to have a few D-1 prospects on the team.

I heard that virtually all the C-USA schools have been in touch with Klein coaches. Tulane was at school yesterday to watch MLB West, who supposedly did very well at Rivals session at TCU several weeks ago. OLB Moore is getting a lot of interest from SEC and PAC 10 schools due to athleticism. Some of Top 25 schools have stopped coming since Shugarts announced for Ohio State. Hebert committed early to Rice, who are also interested in West. Bullock, who could kick a number of places but would like to hear from TAMU due to family reasons, will end up with a D-1 ride somewhere. Farley and Palmer will get alot of press in fall if Klein continues to be a run dominated offense as they have in the past. Youboty would like to go to Ohio State, like his brother Ashton did, but not hearing that is likely. I think that you could have 7 D-1 guys at Klein next year. If you count D-1AA you may get several more as kids like Koetzer get first varsity shot and have great grades to go with. Koetzer and West could go Ivy league on academics alone. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

I can't name all the schools that have visited Stratford's spring workouts, but I know it's included A&M, Tech, Houston, Rice, LSU, K-State and a few others. Obviously, everybody who is after Andrew Luck wants to drop by and be seen, and that is no doubt going to help other Spartans get noticed.
Top prospects already on the NCAA radar:
1. Luck
2. Jimmy Burge, NG
3. Terrence Lloyd, DE (a junior-to-be)
4. Jonathan O'Neal, OG
Should be getting looks this fall:
5. Brian Hines, OT
6. Charlie Jackson, OLB
7. B. J. Griffin, WR
8. Drew Crawford, CB
9. Trevor Grall, S
10. Tim Graves, RB (junior-to-be)
11. Ben Bredthauer, HB
12. Graham Gibson, DE
A very talented bunch of kids. If they work hard, stay out of trouble (academic and otherwise), come together as a team, and show heart in adversity, they have a chance to be a very special group.
Spring game on Thursday May 17th.
