I got them to autograph a football I had bought a few days before and they also signed my t-shirt that shows a C-130 crew standing in front of the plane with all kinds of bombs, munitions, and rockets scattered around. They liked the caption on the t-shirt that says, "The enemy has won the coin toss and elects to receive":p

All total, they were in the base theater almost 2 hours. They started out with a question and answer session and also took questions during the autograph and picture session. I'd post my picture with them if I could, but the base network won't let me get onto Photobucket.

They were personable and friendly and looked like they really enjoyed being there. They had done many things with the Navy and Marines when they were in San Diego.

I'll give you the lowdown on what I asked them and some of their other comments, too.

I asked Drew how special it was to come back and play in Texas and thanked him for helping force Big Bill into retirement!:D He said the Cowboys game was big because it was the first time he'd been back in Texas Stadium since the 1996 title game with Westlake. It was special for him since it was on National TV (Sunday Night) in his home state in a big game (Both teams were 8-4) and the fact that Sean Payton was his coach made it a bigger game. He said Sean really respects Bill, but wanted to beat him so bad he couldn't stand it. Sean told the team, "They were going to kick the Cowboys *** " and that's exactly what they did.

Drew has a cocky edge that you always expect from QB's and shortstops in baseball and softball, which leads to another one of my questions when I was going to get an autograph. I was trying to set farmerfan up, but Drew didn't come through. I asked him what would've happened if he'd played Lewisville in 1996 (The guys that ran for over 500 on Judson in the D1 title game) with that 16-0 Westlake team. I expected and hoped he'd say they'd beat their brains in (Actually, a few different words), but the only thing he could come up with was, "They were pretty good weren't they?"

My other question during the autograph time was for both players, but geared more for Donnie. I asked how they liked having Wade Phillips as a coordinator (Donnie played MLB while Wade was D Coordinator in San Diego and Drew was the former QB for the Chargers). Donnie said he was a good guy and one of the best coordinators out there, but he wasn't sure how good of a head coach Wade is. Drew just basically nodded. Donnie's answer was my concern from the start and I've said the same things. I don't think Wade Phillips is the type to come in and ruin a good thing, but I also don't know that he's the type to come in as head coach and make things a lot better.

One guy asked both players how they overcame being undersized (Drew is only about 6 foot tall and Donnie plays MLB at about 225 pounds) and they both agreed that it's hard work. They both said that how the NFL looks at players in the combine and draft is flawed because they need to see who can play, not what their measurements are or how much they bench or how fast they can run. One time Donnie said he could bench 275 pounds 25 times and said he was the strongest guy on base and would go to the gym to prove it. I was hoping somebody would challenge him, but they didn't!:D

Drew said it wasn't his fault for Rezzie Boosh getting flattened in the Eagles game in the playoffs. He said that play was scripted before the game and he was worried what would happen because Jim Johnson has his defense blitz a lot, but he ran the play anyway. He said he knew trouble was coming as soon as he released the ball.

Somebody asked the guys who they could have as a teammate if they could pick any one. Donnie said he liked playing with Jamal Williams (6'3" and 348 pounds) because he clogs up the middle and lets a little guy like Donnie get to where he needs to go. Drew said some center they had gotten from the Browns and made a general statement about several offensive linemen over the years. He wouldn't say any one receiver was his favorite, but he did mention Colston as being a real good player.

We all got a laugh when a Chiefs fan asked Donnie if he enjoyed not having to play against "arguably the best RB in the NFL, Larry Johnson" now that he's back in Kansas City. Drew said, "There is a guy in San Diego that wears #21 that's pretty good." Donnie asked the guy if he was a Chiefs fan.

Drew told one of the girls that works for me to go out for a pass and after she dropped it, she faked like she was going to throw the ball at him!:p

Drew and Donnie really leaned down low to take a picture with another guy that works for me and they were just clowning around in general. You can tell they really like each other and Donnie kept asking Drew questions like what plays he likes to run and who his favorite receivers were since they're going to play each other in August in Pre-Season!

One guy asked Drew about how he responds to different receivers and if guys bother him about throwing them the ball. He said some guys are quiet and he knows that somebody like Joe Horn really means it when he'd tell Drew that he could beat a guy. He said he'd tell T.O. to shut up if he came over asking for the ball and then dropped it!:D That's the whole gist of his feelings. He said if you're a receiver and complain about passes, you better catch them.

Somebody asked the guys about Marty Schottenheimer getting fired. They both said that Marty was a great guy, but neither of them said it was an injustice for him to get fired. I get the feeling that they both think he won't win the big game, but they didn't want to say that.

Drew said he was really impressed that the Saints sold out every game last year with a lot less people in New Orleans than before. He said that first home game on Monday Night Football vs. the Falcons was electric.

Somebody asked Drew about playing with Boosh. Drew said he was a great receiver from the start, but Rezzie learned how to run from Deuce. It made me think about Emmitt and Barry in the 90's. Deuce would come out of the games with like 11 carries and 75 yards and Rezzie would sometimes lose yards. Rezzie had to learn that you need to make positive yards on carries and not negative yards. In the 90's Barry Sanders would break a lot of big runs, but what you don't see on the highlights is how many negative runs he'd have in a game and how many drives were stopped by his negative runs. Emmitt was nowhere near as flashy, but he also kept drives going.

Drew told one Falcons fan to get ready to lose some more!

I'll post more things if I can remember. I didn't give a shout out to the website since Drew didn't seem to want to talk about his high school days. I told him I was rooting for Westlake in the title game last year.

Lonnie to Brees and Edwards, " What's it like being the second best thing in sports after the Mavs?"

Lonnie found stuffed in trashcan following question...

"But guys, Dirk's got the sweetest shot in sports, if the refs would just call the game fairly...":D

For one night, I layed off the basketball talk. I should've gone a couple miles over the next night to get more stuff signed since I shaved my head after I left the base theater. The picture I took with them might be the last picture ever taken of me with hair (Yes, the people who've met me will say I didn't have much to start with!:D ). I gave 'em a Guns Up for the picture. Donnie said, "The NFL does not condone gang affiliations" and both asked what I did. I told them it was Texas Tech's "Guns Up". I can forgive Cali and Pac-10 Donnie, but Texas Drew should've known even if he did play in the Big 10.
