I'm still having a hard time seeing Houston Strake Jesuit make the playoffs. If they manage, more power to them, but I doubt it.

I must say though, you put some work into this. I agree with the vast majority of what you have predicted. Not that you needed my confirmation, I just figured I would toss in my two cents.

I can't say they will and I'm not betting the house on playoff success, but they haven't proven otherwise yet. Some of these teams won't show us anything in the regular season because they play chump non-district games followed by crap districts.

The regular season does not always match the playoffs, but it's very hard to get 30 points better over the course of 3 months.

Don't forget Crowley that started 0-4 and was a state semifinalist -- it might be a little early to start throwing in the towels -- the real season starts this weekend --

I'm not liking this thread.

Non-district showings, while not completely useless, still can't be viewed the same as a district game.

Our coaches experimented a bit in all 3 of our non-district games, because its not the end of the world if you lose the games. Might as well snap out of all the "turn the ball over in your own red zone twice in a matter of 15 seconds" out of your system in non-district rather than in district where it counts.

With this being said, even though we have had piss poor offensive efforts the past two games, does that change my opinion about how I think we will do in non-district? No. I still believe we are going to go 7-0 in district and go to the playoffs. In order to do so, you have to believe. Call me crazy but until you can predict the future my opinion is going to have to be resepcted. Our defense has turned in 2 outstanding games the past two games, if our offense can play as well as the defense has we will do something.

BHS06, I am proud of your school spirit and belief in your team. Get the rest of them on your page/ Was worried about you after Friday night. This is your first post i think since and I thought maybe something had happend on Friday.

One question, why did your coach pull Joe Mauro in the firth with 9:30 or so left and bell still somewhat in the game. In my mind, he was giving up and looking to this Friday, not a good sign or message to the team. just my two cents worth

I'll tell you what. If you win the next 3 weeks, you'll almost be off my done list, but you'll definitely get off the list if you beat Euless Trinity. The point spread says you'll be favored in 1 more game this year and double digit underdogs in the rest. The good part is the game is played on the field and if you guys get on a roll, I'll acknowledge it. Hey, I'd like to see you guys beat Trinity. My uncle used to live in Hurst and some of my cousins went to school at Bell.

Ahh, just relishing the loss. I hate losing, especially in the manner we have lost the past 2 games. It sucks having a team score 2 touchdowns in a matter of 15 seconds and having the game escape from you. It's tough to deal with so it took me a while to get over it.

I'm pretty sure he sat Joe to tell him that just because he is the starter at QB that it doesn't mean he won't be taken out for playing bad. He was taken out to get the message across that he better start working harder and do better at practice, and the coaches won't hesitate to bench him. The person they put in, a junior, had a great week of practice and got the nod to be the backup over last weeks backup against North Mesquite, so they decided to see what he could do there. Had he driven the team downfield and scored, great, had he not, oh well. His interception he threw was caught, but our wide reciever DeAndre just didn't hold on to it and that #4 guy stripped it right out of his hands. I agree the coaches should have done more to win the game since it seems like they gave up, but I don't think the coaches thought we deserved to win the game since we played so bad offensively so they put it at that.

Your coaches needed to do everything they could do for you guys to win the game. You could use the confidence because you don't have a cakewalk district. You have some tough battles ahead and quitting isn't an option.

I counted you out because you showed in non-district that you're not going to make a deep playoff run. Run the table and you're back in my good graces. Beating Trinity will go a long ways toward changing my mind.

Contrary to what you think, playing a tough non-district slate makes it easy to say yes or no to teams. We get to see early in the year what you're capable of doing. That's why some teams that you are better than have not been eliminated yet. They haven't played anybody and it doesn't mean I think they're better just because they haven't been eliminated. You guys should've stayed within 30 of SLC if you didn't want me to knock you into the won't make a deep run category. One bad game does not put you on the wrong list, but games like last week seal the deal. Sometimes a win seals the deal, too. There are 3-0 teams out there right now that I don't have faith in.

I was pretty confused. We had the ball, down 27-14, with about 2:15 left in the game, and 3 timeouts left. We could have scored a quick TD then onside kicked or something. Instead, we just ran our set with two tight ends and 2 running backs and just ran the clock out, and finally threw a pass late in that drive that was intercepted. But by that time there was about 40 seconds left so it didn't matter.

Hey BHS06, your enthusiasm is admirable -- your information on this board is developing a history of being on the questionable side -- I was at the Bell/FM game -- the pass that was taken out of #1's hands (English) was the pass that Mauro threw toward the close of the game -- the one series that the back up was in during the 4th qtr -- that interception was because the ball was underthrown by 5 yards -- I was sitting right there on the FM side and saw the play --

I also don't ever think it is a good idea to get on a message board and criticize your teammates -- or to openly question your quarterback's practice and work habits -- I am sure that some of your teammates read this board and probably know who you are --

I got the plays confused, they were the same exact play to the same exact person in the same exact area. My bad..

I wasn't really criticizing him, even he knew he played a bad game and he was very down on himself Friday after the game and on the bus ride home. But I know him and I know he can regroup and come up with a big showing Friday night against IMac. After thinking about it, I'm guessing the real reason they put the back up in was because he worked hard at practice this week to get the nod to suit up for varsity, and since we were down 27-7 anyway, they thought it was the best time to put him in and give him a shot to see what he could do and give Joe a break. When Joe came back in, he did lead the team to a score. Like I said, the game at that point wasn't over.

Since you said 7-0 in district, I have to ask a question. Your scores so far do not indicate you will make the playoffs, but it can happen. What did the team learn in the last 3 games that will propel you to a playoff berth in a very tough district?

I've updated after 22 Sep 05 games.

San Antonio Highlands and Holmes were eliminated. Mesquite Horn got off the schnide. 136 are OUT and 108 are IN.

MacArthur and Rockwall are on watch. Teams will start to be eliminated as it looks like they'll miss the playoffs. Lakeview needs more wins to get on the IN side.

We're down to 92 teams and would be a little lower without the missing scores and the hurricane, but one thing is clear to me right now. Most of the trash was kicked out in the first cut and it's real close and back and forth for a lot of the remaining teams. There will be cuts every week, but I don't know if we'll get huge cuts. We'll probably have a nice respectable low number after 5 more weeks, though.

I know I'm having a lot of fun with this, though. :D It's made me pay a LOT more attention to the teams in 5A.

How is Haltom in and Grapevine out when Grapevine beat them in district. That basically assures them of having three losses in district and will probably not make the playoffs
Haltom has 1 loss and that might be a bad game for them. Grapevine has shown they won't get it done against better teams. I agree that Haltom probably has 2 more losses coming in district, but I can't pick based upon what I think will happen. I have to go with past results. If SLC blows Haltom out of the water, I might knock them out. Grapevine can get back in with big wins. Haltom deserves the chance to play their way in or out, not have me arbitrarily eliminate them.

I could've sat here a few weeks ago and said these are the teams I think stand a chance to do playoff damage, but I wanted to take a good look. As we get closer to the end of the year, where teams stand in district will start to move them in and out. I don't want to jump the gun and knock teams out with just 1 bad game in most cases.

I say they're out of the hunt for a state title or a serious run in a game against a top team. They won't come within 20 points of a great team. Some will make the playoffs and they'll win games, but not be a serious threat.

-Not even close to accurate-
I just wanted to let you know that almost every team I eliminate goes on to lose the next week and justify me eliminating them. You'll see why I put out Denton Ryan when SLC gets done with them. This is not a non-playoff list and some of the eliminated teams will win games, but the eliminated teams will not contend for a title. There are still more teams to be eliminated and those that are left are not all better than some of the teams who have been eliminated.

Instead of just bashing my list, why don't you tell me why I'm wrong.

RyanOline

Is it about Ryan or also other teams? I'm more than willing to listen to why Ryan is better than I think. So far, it looks like you're not winning by enough points and that spells trouble to me against SLC. You don't look to be as good as you were last year.

You're right. We havent shown we can compete with great teams yet. I do agree with you on that. We need to execute better. The good thing is we have the coaching and ability to be great. We have to focus on the little things such as blocking techniques, executing fakes, etc. If we can get these down we will be a competitor. But I do agree with your point of us not showing that we can compete with great teams.

For Region 2, out of 12-5A, the third spot is still up in the air for our district. We have Rockwall, Horn, and Mesquite that could STILL get in. Longview and TJT will more than likely make it. Longview is all but a lock as of right now. John Tyler should get in without a problem. The third spot won't be decided just yet.

I didn't knock Rockwall out yet, but will probably after the Longview game. Right now the only thing that matters is how everybody plays against Longview. If you don't come close to beating Longview, you get sent to the cleaners. Deep playoff runs are hard to come by and you can't get blown out by the good teams.

Burnt Orange looked decent today. Still don't think they should be #2 in polls, but that is just my opinion. On to your list.... agree with most of it. The only thing you are not taking into account is when a team gets HOT in the playoffs. Every year you have 1 or 2 teams that had a horrible year in district and just squeaked into playoffs. They get hot and make very deep playoff runs. I realize you can't know at this time who the teams will be, but you can make some intelligent guesses. Heck As much as you watch the stats I bet you could name 1 right now! LOL On to the Lufkin Panthers. There defense is very very good. On offense they are unstoppable while passing. The only problem I have noticed is the offensive line is still holding to much on running plays. To me that means the are getting beat by the defensive lines. Sad to say but the only real test we have had so far this year was against Nacogdoches ( very much improved ) Last night was over before it even got started. The next 3 weeks will be a big test for them.

Ok I thought it was an elimination from the playoffs.
I did not bash your list. I just didn't think it was accurate at first - nothing personal.
Now that I know it is an elimination for title contention, I retract my previous statement.

After witnessing the complete and total destruction of Haltom by SLC and seeing that Colleyville Heritage loss, then I will have to say that SLC, Denton Ryan, and then Grapevine are in the playoffs which would mean an early exit of the playoffs to either Euless Trinity or SLC! They would have to meet in the first round and one of them would go home!

Well, we're down to 56 teams and more need to be cut and some of those left are surprises. I think your surprise team comes out of the 56 left. I only eliminate teams after I feel confident they won't pull a shocker.

In that game, I'd pick Trinity but I'm not going to eliminate either team because they both stand a chance to beat each other. I don't know that I'll run the list in the playoffs. I might stop after Game 10 and leave that as the teams who can make noise against top-flight competition. I could give a rip if a team wins 3 games against inferior competition.

Lonny,

Curious to why you haven't eliminated SA Macarthur? They have two district losses with Judson, Madison, Roosevelt, & Churchill to play.
Because they are potentially good enough to beat all those teams. The balance of 26-5A means you have to get to 3 district losses to be eliminated. I can't eliminate MacArthur or Roosevelt because they played hard against 2 teams in the top 11 in the power rankings. That means a lot. It means with a little luck, they could win a big playoff game.

The teams I eliminate either have losing records, have shown a couple times they won't come close to beating a top team, or they get totally humiliated by a top team. I also look to see if a team is winning by enough points and if they aren't getting better, they're gone.

I know some people are wondering why I don't eliminate some teams, but I don't want to cut this thread off. I like being careful who I eliminate and each team gets a review every week.

Everybody gets their day in court and is provided a fair trial.

There's still 4 weeks to get below the 56 teams and we don't even know who the 96 playoff teams will be right now. More teams will be eliminated this week.

How can I make any cuts? We have 5 teams at 2-2, one at 3-1, and one at 4-0. Other years have had blowouts, but not this year. Believe me, I'd like to fire some teams. If everybody has a chance to beat SV and Judson, that means all of them have a chance to go to the semis. I will have to fire the teams that can't make the playoffs.

GoOwls
10-18-2005, 04:27 PM
Lonny, you cut my Owls out? Most polls have them in the top 20 in the state, and with a tough D, anything can happen in the playoffs.

Also, are you telling me that 8 San Antonio schools have a better chance of playoff success than the Owls do? Has that foreign food got to your brain? Only 6 of them have a chance of even making the playoffs, and you know some of them have no chance of success even if they make it. I hate to say it, but your poll is stinking more and more of homerism as the weeks go by.

It's real simple if you look at it. The best teams in Region 4 do not look to be as strong as the best teams in the other regions. That's going to leave more teams in the running. I left teams in the rankings that stand a good chance to get to the semifinals. Somebody in D1 and D2 has to do it in each region. It's too hard to call the 26-5A teams right now and the same goes for the top teams in 27-5A. It's not homerism, because I'll probably fire some teams this week.

Anyway, I can't fire everybody at the same time. I have to have teams to fire each week. If any of the 26-5A teams besides Lee were getting blown out, I could eliminate them, but that's not happening.

I understand what you are saying, but I thought "playoff success" was the satandard, not whether you make the playoffs or not. That's why I'm fussin' about my guys being left out and 8 schools, only of which 2 or so have a real chance of "playoff success" are left in. I do not count playing border schools as "playoff success". No offense intended, it's just a fact.

Maybe you should reconsider Midland. Their only district loss (so far) was to Abilene. They only lost by 11 points, thanks to 2 interceptions and a blocked field goal. Abilene high only scored 3 points in the whole second half (and the left all the starters in through the last play of the game). Just some thoughts.

if they are capable of pulling of an upset dont you think they should still stay on. But i wud agree that not many teams are on the same planet of north shore and the fact pearlands never beaten north shore but never lossed by more than 20 and two of the were less than ten includin the battle last yr.

Who would you eliminate if it becomes apparent that SLC and Euless Trinity will be playing in the first round? And do not just say the loser! What are your predictions for that game?
Boy, that almost happened.

I said Trinity here, but I voted for SLC in the Superbracket.

It should be the best deployment out there, but the Wing CC has too many rules and people don't like it. I have 3 months left.
I still agree with everything I said there.

It all washed out in the end because I fired the 26-5A teams. I just couldn't do it until I knew who would be in the playoffs.

I didn't want to fire them, but they've struggled in a few other games. I think they get as far as playing Plano in Round 3 before they get beat.
Yes, sir.
