"Pacman" gets unplugged

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell handed out the first suspensions under his discipline policy, banning Adam "Pacman" Jones for the entire 2007 season and Chris Henry for eight regular-season games.

The two players are suspended without pay for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy and engaging in conduct detrimental to the league on numerous occasions, the NFL announced.

After they serve their suspensions, each player must apply for reinstatement.

"We must protect the integrity of the NFL," Goodell said. "The highest standards of conduct must be met by everyone in the NFL because it is a privilege to represent the NFL, not a right. These players, and all members of our league, have to make the right choices and decisions in their conduct on a consistent basis."

Henry should have received the whole year too, but good move by the NFL. That bad Titans D is pretty well screwed though since Pacman, Vanden Bosch and Bulluck were their only decent players last year, but Nick Harper was signed this offseason and I'm really hoping Tennessee drafts Aaron Ross with their first pick. He can come in and immediately play in the nickel alongside Hill and Harper or even move to CB if Hill continues to screw up. He also solves their return game voids with Pacman now gone.

Did any of yall see Deion Sanders' interview with Pacman? It was on NFL network.

I didn't quite know what to think of that. Obviously, Deion has a bit of an agenda (understatement) given he went through similar things in his early years as a pro.

I diverged from Prime Time's path when he started talking about the role the NFL should play in helping players, like a young Deion, who didn't grow up with authority figures/money/fame. How can the NFL go about changing behavioral patterns engrained from an early age? From what I understand, they've always held these "seminars" for rookies in an attempt to educate but how much would anyone really pay attention to those?

I've seen the environments some of these guys grew up in because I've lived in big cities most of my life (Houston and Chicago primarily), and been through some rough spots.

What I don't know is how the NFL can possibly teach the lessons that Deion hinted at. The NFL has no control over who the players hook themselves up with agent wise to my understanding. They can't control the people whispering in these guys' ear. The NFL can't babysit them 24-7 and say "Pacman, it might not be the best idea to go to Vegas with your criminal friends and dump a trashbag of cash on the Moan Ranger and Gerroniho."

In my opinion, just about everyone in this country, regardless of what conditions they grew up in, should be able to have at least a basic understanding of what's right and wrong.

I'm sure it's only human nature that when you get money dumped on you like they do, that you want to have a good time and toss it around but after a couple months of being in that lifestyle I'd think you'd settle down a little and re-prioritize to keep yourself in check first and foremost.

I'd say if there's anything the NFL can do, it would be to possibly re-evaluate how the league is set up as far as agents, support system, etc. is concerned. Right now, I just don't see where guys like Pacman would be able to learn the professional responsibilities that Deion is talking about. The NFL is a professional organization, and part of me wants to say it's not their responsibility to teach these guys how to be adults. That's on the individual. So, that's where I disagreed with Prime.

as for KT's questions, I don't think it is the NFL's obligation to teach these guys right from wrong, which is a prerequisite to ever gaining the skill to handle a professional career.

Is a guy like PacMan going to learn how to invest or shop for a great home in the mean streets, well obviously no. i still hold him responsible for the most basic nuances of human decency. people know when they're taking advantage, assaulting, or demeaning someone; I don't care where you grew up.

The admins have laid out their idea of civility many, many times. I'm not trying to insert myself into a place of power here so that I might dictate the course and actions of this board. To quote ktchamp...

The point of having this board is so that people can discuss things that don't quite fit into the other boards. It is here to encourage a stronger sense of community so that people feel comfortable to talk about what's going on in school, at work, at home, etc. It is meant to be mostly positive and encouraging...not controversial and divisive. If you think that's dumb, do everyone a favor and quit posting.

I honestly don't understand why we can't debate in a civil matter. Of course some debates get heated... they're supposed to when the topic is one where passionate opinions are being shared, but it's all the "sheep f'er" type stuff that gets really old. Dude, I'm old. I've been here a long time. I know all that and I have been through all that. If you could ever listen to #1Dawgfan or odessapermian.com tell you what I was like on the old LSWC boards. Trust me... this is nothing new to me, but we have reached a level of extreme never before seen. anything is okay in moderation, but I have been around this board since damn near the day it opened and I have never seen things as bad as they have become.

I am an aggy fan. But I didn't even look at the board after I saw a guy spanking another guy. That was not fun at t.u. expense. That was just gay.

Think about the ideas of gangs in general. The whole idea behind a gang is that being in a gang says you are too weak to handle your business by yourself. You must depend on a number of guys to keep you safe. The whole thing sounds kind of gay to me....not gay-gay, but unmanly gay. Hell, I've never even been to Katy which rules out all hope of me ever achieving such titles. My words carry no weight whatsoever. I can't tell anybody what to do, it is not my desire to try and I certainly don't expect anybody to listen to me. I'm just throwing out some ideas. Crazy though they may be, I do believe them to be right and will continue to champion them.

There are good people here who regardless of the context, consider being called a "sheep f'er" or having such actions attributed to their peers to be highly offensive.
