Wow! 45" vertical??? Lets see... If he's 5'10" that means he is 70 inches tall. Add to that his 45" vertical and you realize he can stand flat footed and come within 5 inches of hitting his head on a 10' basketball goal. To hell with D1 football, he should go straight to the NBA! :)

I don't doubt the 45 inch verticle. Back when I use to coach volleyball I had a 37 and I am short and stocky.

Sam McGuffie... If you're reading these threads please realize none of these sarcastic posts (mine included) have anything to do with a lack of respect for you or your ability... I saw you play several times last year and I came away with nothing but the highest regard for you.

Yes, He played there but left left the program in 1999 without a degree and headed off for what he hoped would be a long and financially lucrative career in the NBA.

His NBA career didn't go off as well as he'd planned and later returned to UC to finish his degree.

Talking of impressive vertical leaps...Gordon Jones was a reciever at Pitt when Marino was there in the early 80's and was an Olympic level long jumper. He used to make money in the old Fitzgerald Field House on Pitt's campus by taking one step and taking $20 bill or $50 bill off the top of the backboard. David Thompson from NC State and the Denver Nuggets was always quoted as having a vertical leap over 50 inches. He dunked over some dude in the NCAA tournament and caught his foot on the guys shoulder and flipped up in the air. His feet hit the bottom of the backboard. Sounds like OU has got an all around winner coming there way.

Basically the article was talking about how Sam got out of english class and they gave him coach weis's cell phone # and was told to call him. He said that his hands were shaking when he called him. Weis told him he was rarely impressed with young talent and he was with Sam. He told him that he didnt know where he would fit in but that he could play him at any position. He also said that he liked his jump over the guy and thought it was very creative.

Not really true. The numbers are listed on Rivals as seen here...

http://texasprepxtra.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=54392

...but the numbers listed there do not come from a Rivals combine. More often than not, they come from the player themselves or a coach. Any time or measurement that was officially chronicled by Rivals scouts a Rivals combine will be indicated by an "r" next to the data. Like this...

http://texas.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=48554

You can click on that little "r" to see the event where the data was recorded and how others at that camp performed. Bottom line, if it doesn't have that little "r" next to the data, it is not official.

the vertical leap was recorded electronically at the Nike Combine at UH last year.....from what I hear, the electronic measurements are inaccurate because it measure from have far your feet come off the ground or how long you're in the air....people said you easily got more inches being tested on the machine, because you could lift your legs up while you were in the air.......I believe the most accurate vertical tesing method is the one they use at the NFL combines where they measure your reach and then you try to jump and spin the things on the top of a pole.....Sam can jump obviously, but honestly I don't see it being 45"

I know people will tease anytime something is said about McGuffie, and think the hype is out of hand ever since "The Jump" but he is the real deal on the field. He is a truly special talent, and one you really appreciate once you see because you know that kind of God given talent doesn't come along very often.

McGuffie seems to be showing quite a bit of improvement from what has been recorded since his Soph year in 06.

(Soph 2006);

Weight - (175-180?)
Verticle - 41.8
Shuttle - 3.83
40 - 4.32, 4.35 (source: Texprepxtra)

(Jr 2007);

weight - 190+
Verticle - 45"
Shuttle - 3.78
40 - (no posting)

Definately seems to be quite a bit of leg strength improvement as well as quickness and weight gain. With a full season of track & field ahead, 7 on 7, and a full summer of added contioning, 2008 could prove to be yet another exceptional year for McGuffie.

Regardless of his stats. You're right, you can fudge stats., but you can not fudge what he has done on the field. And that is the ultimate test. The difference that I see with Sam is that his track speed (however fast he is) transfers to the football field. I've seen a lot of kids who can clock in the 4.5's on a track, but give them a football and 11 guys chasing them and they look like they're running in mud.

In Sam's defense, it was one game, probably his worst of the year. He got his bell rung very early in the game while blocking on a kickoff return and was never quite right after that. All that aside, credit is deserved where it is due-Pearland had a nasty defense and did a great job against the Bobcats.

McGuffie is 5'10"...maybe 5-10 and a half.. anything more would be stretching it a bit at this point. But i think he's still got a few more inches of growing ahead..
If you've seen his Dad, you'de agree with that. He's tall.

Yea if you saw Tre Newtons dad youd know he is going to be closer to 300 lbs than 200.

Honestly...I dont understand why we are arguing about an inch and 10 lbs. He will maybe grow an inch and he will prolly gain some weight in the offseason. He's a phoenomenal player and I can only see him being better next season due to his great work ethic. Recruiters at all of the best colleges in the country dont care...why should we??

he's at 185 during track season, a sport known for thinning out players, I'm thinking after summer break he will have at least 10 more pounds of muscle on him.

Our RB for next year was 6ft 185lbs...and he looks like he gained a good 10lbs already(he is running track...is Humble's fastest sprinter)... and he is running his 100m dash in 10.4-10.7 range.... the kid has blazing speed.

he looks about 6ft 195 right now, significantly more muscular then during the season while playing WR/back up RB

I dont know how its possible to get heavier during track, but this kid is doing it....maybe he will thin out as the season progresses.

Mcguffie is not near as tall as he is being advertised, but it does not matter because he is a stud and will be a top player for some lucky D1 college.

I think so much of him, that if the Aggies do not get him, I hope he does not land in the big 12.

Some of the best backs of all time at any level have been around 5'9", so whats all the fuss about?

I will tell you and I will be zapped, but it is becuase he is white, sorry but reverse discrimination at the skill positions is real.

I though that when there was a rivals symbol next to the measurement that it was official? If that is the case shouldnt he officially be 6'0'' ft 185?

I agree with txfoosball.
WHO CARES HOW TALL HE IS!!!!
He has offers from Flordia, Alabama, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Kansas State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Michigan, and Minnesota...what other Junoir running back in Texas comes even close to those kind of offers. Obviously they aren't worried if hes 5-9 or 6-0 all they care about is that he produces.

Personally, and this is my opinion, I am tired of hearing two things: That he isn't big enough and that he is white. Neither one matters - anybody who has seen this kid play knows that. We held him to a bad night of only 200 yards...he still hurdled one of our guys and he still had plenty of yards. I don't know how his new O-Line will be but I would place bets that he will still have a stellar year. I hope he goes on to bigger and better things and is so successful that even those on here who have never met him, seen him play or have dogged him say "Hey, I watched that guy in high school":)

Ronnie Fields...former HS teammate of Kevin Garnett...jumps out the gym... a serious neck injury kept him from being the next big thing...

Wow I just saw rivals.com reporting that Florida had offered him this weekend. I read this post earlier, and don't know how I missed it.

It must feel great to get an offer from the National Champs.

The kid is simply amazing on the field and any discussion of anything else is simply useless. Once you SEE what this kid can do, you just have to sit back and admire it. When Falls played Fair I was cheering his accomplishments and hoping Falls could stop him. I felt Falls was lucky Fair chose not to put the ball in his hands on the last 3 plays!
