Ok, Gentlemen (and I use that term loosely).
Let's take a crack at this discussion.
Here is the First Official Invite for the 2005 Ohio State Champions to make the trip down to Texas to play the 2006 SLC Dragon team in Austin the night before the Ohio St. vs. Texas game.
Oh, the anticipation - the passion. KT2000 will have to lock at least one related thread per month the entire spring.
Hummmmm…. What will be scarier for the Ohioans - the TEXAS heat or a 2006 DRAGON Team with returning starters Riley Dodge and Trey Newman?
Shell Boy - Maybe it will be your mighty St. X boys? That will give you an excuse to come to Austin and enjoy some top shelf margarita and gourmet Tex-Mex.

SLC would win any game against anybuddy they play next year...they will have one of the best O's all around the state, that #80 is a diffrent type of reciver, they find another rinfro and jacobson, they have the best wr corps in the state

only 1 out of 8, ouch, thats whats bad about having so many good ones, you could lose all of them one year cause of being seniors, im not to worried though, im sure dodge will find somebody to fill in

Out of the WRs that get playing time for SLC:
#3 Anthony Ford
#6 McKay Jacobson
#8 Evan Fentriss
#15 James Allen
#18 Zak Presley
#19 Clint Renfro
#80 Corbin Smiter
#87 Bryce Jones
There is a grand total of ONE underclassmen in that group, being Anthony Ford who is a Junior. SLC will have Dodge and Newton in the backfield next year, but with only one returning (not starting) wide receiver, and NO returning O-lineman, how good will the dragons be? Defensively they will return Padron and Arius Ford. When you take time to think about these things, you realize that Dodge and Newton wont be enough able to save them...
Of course, never doubt Todd Dodge

the 2006 team will lose the entire starting offense and 8 starters on defense. The O-line, which was not very good last night, will all be replaced with the current JV O-line which actually looks pretty good.

Ohio High School Sport Assocation has a rule where you are allowed one game in which you can travel to a noncontinous state to Ohio, however you can't miss any school. Which is a tough situation for an Ohio school, since you can't leave Friday morning but will have to leave after school starts. Plus you have to be back on Sunday. Not sure how it is in TX, since I thought REL had left Friday morning.
Possible candidates for those not as familiar with OH scene this year:
Cleveland St. Iggy (9 State Titles, 1 Runner Up) I thought was going to be front runner for the Title this year, however they just today dropped a game at St. Joseph Prep of PA 14-28. Both teams were ranked in the USAToday Super 25 poll, I think. Not sure if Iggy was though, but I'm pretty sure SJP was. David Ragone I believe is an alumni from there.
Cincinnati St. Xavier (3 Runner Ups) were the team that beat Colerain 7-0 in the opener. Have a game against St. Iggy and the Greater Catholic League games (Lasalle, Elder (won Title in 02 and 03), and Moeller (premier team of OH in the 70's / 80's, rising again)
Cleveland Glenville (No titles) They are a DI talent factory, most notably Ted Ginn Jr is from there as well as Troy Smith. A couple of other notables playing in college now, but I'm blanking on names. I think they had 23 DI-A signees in past 3-5 years, best in OH.
Massillon Tigers (23 Poll Titles, 2 Runner Ups) famous for Paul Brown of Bengals and Browns
Could be first playoff era State title for Massillon have had some good talent come through such as Zwick (OSU), Crable (UM), recently.
Cleveland St. Edwards (3 Runner Ups I believe). Pretty solid program had Alex Boone a OSU commit last year. Seem to be taking over the torch for St. Iggy up in Cleveland.
Centerville (Dayton north of Cincinnati), could be the dark horse team that takes out Colerain or St. Xavier on their way to a State Title. Very good passing team, Kirk H. alma mater. I believe the big guy from there now is AJ Hawk.
Cincinnati Colerain (Started 0-1 but have finished strong thus far). Should run the rest of their schedule and probably get a high home seed. My pick currently to win state again. The defense will be tough to score on for any team in Ohio. The offense will be tough to start now that Gary Pride has got the option down. St. X vs. Colerain will be quite a game in the playoffs.
I doubt that a school from Columbus or Toledo area will challenge for the title this year though.
Possibly Toledo St. John and Columbus Brookhaven (a version of Cleveland Glenville).

I've noticed that most of the top ranked schools in Ohio are Catholic, prep or private. Are these schools limited to zoned attendance areas or are they allowed to recruit and draw from anywhere ala Evangel Christian in La?

Also, I doubt Todd Dodge would ever agree to such a fiasco.

Coach Dodge probably wont. I dont think Coach Outlaw (Lufkin) would either.
Honestly... I would like to see a program like Katy take the Texas flag and take on one of the powers from Ohio, California, Florida.
Katy is Katy and every year its the same thing. Very sound program.
Maybe we can have a Katy vs Colerain game in Austin the same weekend of the Texas vs Ohio St game. I would love to see it.

Outlaw has had the offers and refused everytime. He has no desire to do it and he thinks it is a waste of time to fly across the country to play a hs football game.

Ya,, I heard Coach Outlaw also say that he wont play "private schools." Not saying that everyone is a Private school but he said he wont do it.
That's also one of the big problems that Texas has when facing other STATES. The (UIL) is much more restrictive then most States when it comes to players transferring and ect. Texas teams play with a tighter sports governing authority.

How about this:
Dave Campbell's (or whoever will sponsor it) Texas vs. Usa Challenge (similar to the Herbstreit/Ohio thing). Have two teams from Ohio (or Cali, Florida, etc.) to play the 5A DI and D2 champs before UT plays OSU. Play one game at 8:00 Friday night and the other game Saturday afternoon before the UT/OSU game that night. This would give everyone ample travel time and would make for one hell of a weekend of football. I know this might be hard to coordinate, but if a professional sports marketing group handles this it could be realistic. But be sure the games are played outdoors. Wouldn't want the visiting teams to miss out on the 90% humidity and 100+ heat in early September down there.

I wish all the HS coaches in Texas had this much common sense. We can find plenty of great competition in our own state without flying 1200 miles. Let's just let it rest and stop trying to set up an Ohio vs Texas HS rematch game.

Southlake Carroll is not going to be as good this year as in previous years.
They may even lose to Colleyville Heritage. I cannot see them winning it all this year.
Ohio's best would give them a good game this year and could possibly beat them. But then again, I do not think SLC is our best this year.

I say if you're good, you're good. Put you money where your mouth is. I give REL a big hand for taking that challenge. We can't sit here on a Texas 5A web site bragging about how great we are to rest of the country and not be willing to show it to anyone. If SLC is really that good they could take the Ohio champ and not blink an eye. Or, are we Texans nervous that we can be beat?

Those teams had down games and had to claw their way to the top. Lose to Colleyville Heritage? That would be a long shot.

Kind of, most parochial schools have a feeder system from local parishes, and are kind of self bounded by the archdiosece but not by the OHSAA (the ohio high school athletic association). However now most are open enrollment. Before only a select few parochials and publics were open enrollment. St. Xavier / St. Iggy have open enrollment since they have open a long long time ago, since they are Jesuit schools and not run by the archdioseces. Glenville in Cleveland is a public school and has open enrollment as well Withrow (in Cincy) and Brookhaven (in Columbus) but there are several other public schools in those urban cities but you can go to any of them. The ones I have listed have had the most success with transfers and such. Also most parochial schools except St. X and St. Iggy have bus service provided by the local area publics school districts.
Recruiting is not allowed by any school and they are very strict about that public or private. No phone calls by coaches, no athletic scholarships, etc... There is stuff like financial aid, but that's not regulated as much. Cincy Moeller got in trouble a couple of years back for handing out pampletes at a feeder parish which didn't have a middle school. Some of the local publics had complained, but Moeller only got a hand slap penalty nothing serious. One of the publics got in trouble and had the 'death penalty' enforced which prevented them from making the playoffs for 1-2 years since they had illegal recruiting a kid (booster paid them to go to Massillon I believe). Not sure how it's in TX with recruiting and transfers. Or how ECA operates out in LA. But from the time I have lived here not many 'big time' recruits move in just for the football program. A couple time a kid bounces from one school to another. But no move ins that I can remember from out of state.
In OH if you transfer during high school you have sit out a year a la College, but if both administrators of the school districts sign off on it for a legimate reason (parents move for work, etc...) then they can play without losing that year of eligibility.
Sorry if that was kind of confusing.

Colleyville Heritage is as good as they've been in several years. SLC is not as good as they were the past few years IMO.
So I am predicting the first BIG upset this year.

For the most part, these games need to be set up well in advance and you won't know who the state champs will be. For instance, next year's Herbstreit Classic game(s) is already set. Mission Viejo (CA) will play Lakewood St. Edward (OH). I believe there will be at least one other game. St. Edward has never won a state title and is not favored to this year. Chances are whoever ends up as Ohio's DI state champ will already have their '06 schedule complete....they can't just cancel game contracts and fly to Texas to play SLC (or whoever).
I think the way it worked out this year was extremely fortuitous with the Texas 5A champ and the Ohio DI champ both having open dates the same week.

Interesting note:
Two Schools have really dominated OH DI football since the playoff era (1972)
Moeller with 7 Titles and 4 Runner Ups in the 70's and 80's.
and
St. Iggy with 9 Titles and 1 Runner up (90's / early 00's).
Both schools had one thing in common, Catholic parochial programs and had /have great head coaches.
Moeller with Gerry Faust (went to ND for a so-so stint and then Akron, but went straight from Moeller to ND which is unheard of!)
Gerry Faust used innovated stuff like year round weight lifting, ballet for linemen and such, which many area schools had not begun to do.
St. Iggy with Chuck Kyle (been there since the mid to late 80's and will probably retire).

I think your explaination is pretty clear.
I went to Whitmer HS in Toledo in the late 70's. We lost to Moeller in the quarter finals in 78, I think. We were convinced they recruited from all over the country at the time, but we didn't really know, Moeller was at the other end of the state, and the Catholic schools around us were not really any better than anyone else at the time.

The only real way to find out who is better overall, and only for that particular year, is to have the Ohio D1 champs play the 5A D2 champs at the end of the season. This is when you really know who "#1" is in each state and rankings are out the window. But we all know this scenario will never take place since the UIL and OHSAA would not sanction such a game that late in the season. So I guess each state will never be truly represented by their best unless by chance either one of the teams in Friday's game (Colerain or REL) wins a championship this year. This will be an infinite debate. However I really hope a competitive Ohio team is willing to venture to Texas at some point whenever it may be. Like it or not, long distance interstate competition is the wave of the future for high school football as long as there is money to be made by marketing companies and interest by high school programs for these types of games.

The first several Moeller State Championship teams were all home grown from what I'm toldr. After that was when people wanted to come in and play for Coach Faust. He was really good at getting all his guys academic and athletic scholarships even the guys that didn't play much on varsity during their careers. The tough thing was people who had traditionally sent their kids to Roger Bacon and Purcell (where Roger Staubach went). Moeller & another Catholic high school Lasalle were the new kid on the block started in the early 1960's to help with the population boon in Cincinnati, so Coach Faust had to start from scratch. Plus Moeller was ideally close to an area undergoing a population boon with 'blue collar kids' from Reading, Deer Park, Silverton, and such. One of Moeller stars and current head coach was Bob Crable who grew up in Deer Park. He played at ND and later the NY Jets (at LB I think), but he was kind of poster boy of hard hitting smash mouth football Moeller was known for. A couple yards and a cloud of dust was their mantra lol. However, the population in Cincy has shifted away and north toward the suburbs of Mason, West Chester, and such where it is much more white collar, imho.
