Alright folks...

We've been hammering out our preseason Top 25 and we feel we have a pretty good handle on it. I'm interested in hearing who y'all think will be the elite teams in the state this year.

We see 7 teams that could, in any other year, have a case to be ranked #1. The team we have pegged at #7 for now, is just scary good and may be the best looking "7th best" team in a long long time.

Be objective, be civil, and try to give us some insight as to why you rank certain teams. There really are no wrong answers when it comes to this sort of thing, because who the heck really knows...

Fire away...

trinity05,

They're in the upper echelon ;).

We'll be starting our Countdown to #1 at the beginning of next month, which will lead up to the release of our 2005 Gridiron Guide.

Where would you rate the Trojans?

supercentex,
You've actually got several teams in the exact spots that we have them.

And, this isn't a criticism, but having Lufkin behind Longview should certainly create some discussion, hah.

Dude, i'm on my game........How many did I get in the exact spot?

In my opinion........I think Longview has the returners back this year to do some damage with Lufkin...IF they met. Nothing against Lufkin....I saw what they have........

trinity05
04-26-2005, 07:07 PM
I think they belong in the bottom part of the top 10 i would rank them in front of midland lee. imo trinity has more coming back this year. I think there only loss would be to tyler lee.....and who knows......maybe they could pull that game off as well

katytiger07
04-26-2005, 07:58 PM
i think katy should be higher than 6 on his list because of all the returning letterman they have coming back they have the whole returning d line and a great o line and back field

I'd say Judson and SV are the teams most likely to knock out a top 4.

At the end of the season last year, I seriously doubted that Abilene High would be a top 10 team this coming season. Based on what I'm hearing, reloading is definitely the word. The offensive side of the ball seems to be shaping up pretty good. There are still several holes to fill on the defense as well as the mix of the coaching staff....at least five new assistants at Abilene High. I definitely am starting to see the possiblities. AHigh could end up with a receiver core close to last year and Potts could be incredible if he improves as much between his Jr - Sr year as he did the previous year. The kid could be simply amazing.

More after spring ball.

I'm wondering why Tyler Lee is so low. From what I've noticed, the only major player leaving is Tyrone Ross, and the second string running back from last year is taking his place. (I've heard that he is supposed to be as good if not better, just a little experience problem). Is that why everyone is ranking them so low? experience? Because the team I saw last year in Tyler and at the state championship could hang if not beat some of the 'big' D2 schools.....

tyrone isnt the only person that is going ot affect lee.....there losing alot of key defensive players pretty much both o and d-line...but that lost just about everyone last yr as well....theres still alot of talent in lee.....look for them to make a deep run again this yr.....

Maybe this year we could have a 5A Texas Football Forum top 10 where posters could vote Sun and Mon. I'm sure someone would volunteer to add the points. It would be interesting to see how our Top 10 compares to the site's. With posters from every part of the state it would be fairly balanced as far as regional bias.

Firebird

I don't know enough about HS football in the rest of the state to make a top 25/top 10 list, but I do know valley football. Whoever had Donna in the top 25 is mistaken. Donna has a new coach this year, he replaces a VERY popular coach who was forced out due to an extremely ugly hazing and sodomy scandal. Donna is usually among the top valley teams (although they nearly always make early playoff exits), but with the turmoil surrounding the program, it's going to be tough for them this year. The new coach is a good coach, but it is going to take some time to right the ship in Donna.

I would also question putting Harlingen in any top 25 list, although it hurts me to say so. (I am a die-hard Cardinal fan). They are probably going to be a very, very good valley team this year, but I don't believe there aren't 25 teams up the state that won't be better. Harlingen will advance farther in the playoffs because the upstate schools knock each other off in the early rounds.

RGVBadBoy
04-27-2005, 02:15 AM
i think Harlingen does belong in the top 25 of texas......Harlingen, though not my team is the best in the RGV and will show it well next season, i expect them to exit the playoffs no earlier than the regional final and thats a fact.....i realize you firebird are a die hard Cardinal fan, i am a die hard Sharyland fan, but i do believe Harlingen will be one of the tops in the state, especially in region 4, Harlingen is one of those teams that can score from anywhere on the field against anyone, they have great speed and great football fundementals.....i would love to say Sharyland was a top 25 team, but though they are a good RGV team, i cant rank them in the top teams of the State, Harlingen WILL make the RGV proud next season and do deserve their ranking by me anyway......i hope to GOD Sharyland has a good season too, that would really make my YEAR!!!! :) GOOOOOOO CARDINALLLLLLSSSSSSS...............AND GOOOOOO RRRAAAAAATTTLLLLEEEERRRRRRSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

How could we not be. We will have on of the best running games in the state, and a salty defense. Vondrell Mcgee will set records once again. And despite his four fumble playoff game against Lufkin, Chris Ivory our full back might be the best in the state.

the best news for the rest of the state is that lp and lview will eliminate one or the other. if we had seeding like some states, they prolly wouldn't meet until a game or 2 later, after knocking out some of the pretenders from out of et.

The reason they are all putting Lview ahead of Lufkin is because they were probably at the playoff game. They saw how good Longview was, and most of that team is coming back. They also saw we turned the ball over 5 times and Longview was in the game until the end.

Finally a Round Rock McNeil entry into the top 20...I don't know squat yet obviously, but I certainly think the talent that they have coming back is top 20 caliber. I think McNeil, Pflugerville, and Leander will be good. I don't know if Cedar Park necessarily should be top 20. I think they will be 4th in that district after losing such a stud and possibly being a one year wonder...

I still think the Pack can beat the Lobos but we cant assume they will both be in the 3rd round. Longview returns starting backfield while Lufkin's O looks to be explosive as usual but inexperienced. I'll admit to be less informed about Longview's returning D. At end of last season I had Longview as early choice as Preseason #1 so im staying consistent. Should be a great season. Longview will have a experienced and deep dline, two starters and depth returning at L-backer. The only question mark is who will fill in the gaps in the secondary. I am confident that the coaches will have no problem filling those positions though.

I'm not saying this because we are rivals, trust me i rooted for them all throughout the playoffs, but can we please take cedar park out of everybodys top 25. Everybody in the austin area that has ever played football knew they had a very solid 05 class full of talent. But certainly not the 06 class. Basically what im saying is, last year they had a team full of very talented seniors, and they wont have that same team anymore. Just my two cents, you can bash me by saying that your just rooting against your rival, but im not.

I don't know every highschool in Texas so don't freak out if I miss any!!!!!

1. SLC

3. Tyler Lee
4. Longview

6. Smithson Valley
7. North Shore(i can't believe how many of yall left them out of even the top 25)

I think you will be suprised on how much you will miss lane...not so much of a need stand point..but lane was a huge gamebreaker...gameplans by opponents changed because of that one player..He was something special. Same thing with SLC and Luna...what a threat he was and he will be missed but they dont need him when all your receivers can run like the wind and you have a QB with a cannon.

1. SLC
2. Abilene
3. Longview
4. Lufkin
5. Judson
6. Katy
7. SV

I picked Longview to go all the way this year after Lufkin beat them last year. I am sticking with that prediction. I still am going to root for Lufkin, and if they meet in the playoffs, I hope Lufkin forces 5 fumbles again!

You guys from Lufkin sure are giving Longview lots of props.. Yes, I agree they are a top five team and they have Vondrell McGee and Chris Ivory that make up one of the best running tandems in the state. The difference again will be coaching, before Coach King was promoted to HC, he was their OC and he still calls the plays. He hasn't changed much in his philosophy and that is the reason Longview will not get the prize they want, plus they don't have big #4 Malcom Kelly at WR any longer to keep the defenses honest. I am not trying to disrespect the Lobos team, I think they lack the coaching in the big games.

Now, where does Lufkin fit in here?, I don't really know. They will have a very strong experienced defense back this year and a very talented young offense loaded with potential talent, they are a top 10 team for sure, somewhere between #4 and #9 depends on how the young offense developes.

Here are my pre-season picks, they are all subject to change by September.

Not one mention of perrenial playoff power Austin Westlake? I got a pretty good feeling they will be back to their old ways now that they have gotten their feet wet in Region II. I know that they didn't show well vs. this region last year but, their Sr. class is very good with TE's William Ball and Kyle Adams getting many D1 offers this spring, and Soph. Nick Foles has been touted as one of the top Jr. QB's in the country for next year.

Don't say I didn't tell you.

I have the Dragons at #2 behind Longview-not exactly disrespectful of Carroll. I think we all know what kind of team and program SLC has but #1 ranking and a state championshp aren't the Dragon's birthright. BTW, I had Lufkin at #5.

No, it is not their birthright, but 47-1 over three seasons and 3 title games and 2 trophies says alot. I am anxious to see how this site ranks everyone. Good luck to all and see you in a few months :) :) :)

Longview doesn't have Kelly. Instead they have a 6'6'' 200 lb tight end who has speed. They also have a talented receiver coming up from the JV. With or without a good pass game, Longview's running game will be dominant.

Nobody in Southlake is assuming there is another Luna out there...the key to the Dragons season will be whether or not they can find a running back who can approach the all-around contribution that Luna brought for three years...Tre Newton? We'll see, but can he take on a Lufkin defender at the 5 yard line and drive him through the end-zone? We sure hope so....Will somebody find the open seam on the screen & take it 4o yards? Will the new guy get 7 pancake blocks in a game protecting McElroy? If he comes close, Carroll will be tough to deal with again...

As an "old timer" of Texas high school football, I can tell you that backs of Luna's caliber are few are very far between. As you know, he was special. Absolutely one of the best blocking backs I have ever seen at the high school level. I am betting SLC won't see the likes of him for a while.

Let Westlake beat a power house North Austin team before you can put them back in the top 20 let alone the top 10. Not saying we should be up there but come on... Westlake against North Austin (aka 15-5a teams) as of last year

VS Leander L 24-19
VS Westwood W 20-17 (keep in mind people, westwood and Leander didnt even make the playoffs in 15-5a)
VS Pflugerville L 30-3 (Pville was the 2nd place team in our district)

Im not trying to be a Westlake hater, but i really think Westlakes success would be a different story in our district. They wouldnt know they've won district before they even step foot in the game zero week, they would be fighting for their lives with Pflugerville, Leander, RR McNeil, Cedar Park, and Westwood year in and year out. Am i bitter of Westlakes success, of course i am. But i honestly think that it would be a little bit of a different story if you weren't in the weak South Austin district.

You are correct. Westlake did not fair well against that district last year. My feeling is however that they will this year. Leander will once again be a tough game, but when you take away the three huge turnovers from last year's game, the Chaps might have run away with that one. The difference in this year's Westlake team will be like night and day from last year's. They will have many of the same components that they had in '00 & '01 when they played in the finals.

Who's going to play QB at Leander? Dunn or Gurinsky?

Thats a very good question and we are in the works with that right now. And you can add another name into the mix to the qb controversy at Leander. His name is Josh McKinnley. He started at free saftey last year for us as a sophomore, but is getting alot of reps at qb this year and looks like either the #1 or #2 as of right now. Curenski (not Gurinsky lol) i think will be used mostly as a situational qb, KR, and should start at one of the wr positions. He kinda plays the role of Tedd Ginn on our team, he's labled as a qb/wr, but hes really our mr everything, and is the fastest player on our team. And then again, Drew Dunn was 2nd team all district behind Korey Washington (the infamous Cedar Park qb that was voted our district mvp), and you can't really argue with that. Plus Drew will be a sr and Josh will be a Junior next year. But then when you look at the attributes
Drew 5'10" 170 4.8 (is very accurate with his passes, and was 2nd in the district in passing yards)
Josh 6'3" 195 4.5 (Can run, and has a cannon, he'll get his shot)

I really think you will see rotated quarterbacks next year, but thats just what im thinking. I'm really looking forward to the game against you guys on our home field.

SV is listed high because they have a fair amount of starters returning and I feel the state populace now takes them seriously. You have 3 title game appearances in the last 4 years and almost beat the national champs.

The mustangs had a great run in 2004 and do have Beasley and Sweeney back but the defense and the offensive line are going to be very suspect.

They deserve some mention for the top 25 but not the top 5 as some are predicting.

Also, the Woodlands are riding their reputation from 2 years ago. Good receiver and kick returner but not much else.

No real clear cut power but:

1. SLC- Still loaded with talent but the qb will have to show something other than just passing. Without the running ability that the dragons had at qb over the last 3 years the offense will definitely be less effective.

The rest in no order as of yet:

Euless Trinity
Garland
Lufkin
Longview
Tyler Lee
North Shore
Katy
Converse Judson
Midland Lee

Oh yea.............Ike will be loaded with talent, 2 years with the new system and real dark horse!!
