The worst fans in the Valley

Basketball fans come in all shapes and sizes. In San Benito they also seem to come sans class.
Three incidents occurred in the last month involving San Benito fans that irked me.
Now, it’s a given that fans are gonna scream and heckle the opponent. It’s part of sports, even at the high school level, and I have no problem with that.
It’s what I’ve witnessed from San Benito fans three times now that bothers me.
The first incident was at Los Fresnos in the District 32-5A opener.
Fouls were bountiful in the physical game and, as expected, fans and coaches complained all night.
In the second half, however, someone on the San Benito side threw an empty soft drink bottle on the court.
One man was asked to leave. The game was delayed for a while and the Greyhounds eventually won in overtime.
Fans throwing debris on the court is bush league, but I let it slide.
A week later in San Benito, the Greyhounds hosted the Weslaco Panthers.
It was another physical and emotional game.
Weslaco has two players on the team from Mexico. Cousins Uriel Segura and Francisco Rodriguez transferred to Weslaco a couple of years ago and have starred for the Panthers since.
Their story is well enough known that Greyhound fans knew about Segura and Rodriguez.
That night, one of these shameless and classless San Benito fans heckled Segura and Rodriguez.
“Ahi viene la migra!” he shouted repeatedly.
In English? This low-brow warned Segura and Rodriguez that the Border Patrol was on their way.
Very classy San Benito.
But, again, I let it slide. It’s probably just one idiot fan that makes everyone look bad. He’s not worth the ink.
But what happened on Friday during San Benito’s game against Brownsville Porter was just too much.
It was a key District 32-5A contest so obviously the game was intense. And from the start it seemed that Cowboys head coach Luis Garza wasn’t pleased with the way the officials were calling the game.
Either he thought San Benito was getting away with too many fouls or too many were being called on his team.
In my opinion, Porter was just playing a little more physical.
Case closed.
Still it didn’t’ keep Garza from losing it in the third period. He adamantly argued a foul on one of his players and got a technical in the process.
The San Benito fans had a field day shouting at Garza, but he sat down and the game continued. It seemed things had calmed down until late in the fourth.
Eleasar Salinas fouled an airborne Anthony Hernandez as he was receiving a pass and fell hard to the floor.
Hernandez drew the foul and slowly made his way to the free-throw line.
In the meantime, a man made his way courtside from the stands.
He began mouthing off at Garza accusing Porter of playing dirty and Salinas of fouling Hernandez on purpose.
Now this is where I have the problem. This man — supposedly Hernandez’s father — had no business on the court or talking to Garza.
The “fan” was kicked out but these great San Benito fans showed their true colors once again.
Someone threw debris on the floor — again — and on the Porter side of the court, a young girl wearing a Lady Greyhounds T-shirt was mouthing off at Porter fans with her arms spread open.
Oh, I almost forgot. During the game, someone yelled at the Porter players, “regresense a Matamoros!” or “go back to Matamoros!”
And these are supposed to be adults. More and more they’ve only proved one thing to me: These Greyhound fans have no class! None at all.
Things got so out of hand on Friday that someone instructed the public address announcer to ask every fan to leave the game.
It’s a shame really because Porter fans and even the real San Benito fans were forced to suffer because the actions of a few.
I’ll give credit, though, to the Greyhounds team. They gestured at the fans to calm down. At least they showed some class.
As for the Greyhounds fans, you know the riff-raff. The ones that like throwing debris on the court and making fun of kids. Well in a perfect world, they’d be stripped of their fandome rights.
They’re truly the worst I’ve seen in almost five years at the Valley Morning Star.

the fan "charged" a player........no the father was mad at a flagrant foul that could have lead to injury (ill give you that one)
