Some thoughts:
1. Much better than last week in all phases. The Owls played a good defensive game without their top two defensive backs and one of their biggest playmakers. Garland controled the clock and kept Ennis off the field, where their powerful air attack could not hurt them. They got precious few breaks from the officials, faced a hostile crowd (classy, but hostile) and came away with a win. Great game plan from the coaching staff.
2. We may have found ourselves a QB. Mr. Hunter looked very good. Granted, he was not under much pressure from the Ennis D Line, but his passes were accurate and the passing game was a big factor. Garland converted several huge 3rd downs through the air. Carter will be a tougher test; they will get a lot more pressure on the QB. However, the passing game looked better.
3. Dante Sloan. Someone needed to carry that hoss off the field last night. 316 yards rushing, and he didn't even play in every series. Hello, major college scouts, where are you?
4. The drive that resulted in the 3rd quarter Owl touchdown was the best offensive series I've seen the Owls execute in two or three years. The pass in the flat to Dante was thing of beauty.
5. Ennis is a very good team. Garland won't face a passing attack that potent again until the playoffs. However, they were not very big. The Owls opponent next week is very big (that would be Carter). That game will be a real measuring stick for these Owls.
6. How does the same Waxahachie team that lost to Ennis last week by 25 beat the DeSoto team that beat the Owls last week?
7. Ennis has some athletes - their LB, number 21 (I think that's his number), was all over the field last night. Ennis is a great atmosphere for HS football.
8. The band and Debs looked good, too!
