Dallas officially hired former Dolphins QB coach Jason Garrett, and he should act as the team's offensive coordinator. That would seem to indicate that a defensive minded coach (not Turner), would have the edge to get the head coaching job.
The Cowboys have received permission to talk to Norv Turner about their head coaching position.

The Contra Costa Times suggests that control over the offense could be a deal maker or breaker regarding the Cowboys' interest in Norv Turner.
Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips might be more likely to get the head-coaching job because Jerry Jones is so enthralled with what Jason Garrett can bring to the Cowboys' offense. Jones' unwillingness to stay out of football business could also wind up turning Norv off.

Jerry hires a coordinatoor before a head coach. Some might say he will hire a HC he could run over.

Jerry hired Garrett when he did because the Dolphins gave them a small window to sign him. The Dolphins had turned down numerous requests by pro and college teams to interview Garrett and denied them, but he gave Garrett the OK to talk to the Cowboys because of their history, but only in a 24 hour time-frame. Jerry had coveted Garrett for many years. He tried to sign Garrett to a coaches contract in 2000, but the NFL was going to pay him about $800,000 a year to be a back-up or third team QB and the entry coaches money was about $100,000, so Garrett chose to take the extra millions pulling easy duty in the NFL. However, it was a well known fact that he was basically a second QB coach all these years, even in his years at Dallas. His father is a coach as is three of his brothers. It's in the family blood. The desire over the last two years of other teams trying to get his services is testament to the fact that he has something going on as a coach.
The two front runners for head coach are Norv Turner and Wade Phillips. Norv coached Garrett and they have a great relationship. Also Turner and Aikman are best friends. Aikman and Garrett are great friends. See where this is going? Aikman has already given Garrett a ringing endorsement. Phillips is 60 years old and hasn't won a playoff game yet. How many successful coaches get their first playoff win in their 60's...........zero.
I really think Turner will get the HC job and Garrett will be his right hand man. Garrett will train to be the Cowboy coach-in-waiting after Turner leaves. It is possible that Jerry won't test the open market and go ahead and give Garrett the HC job anyway. It is believed that the next time Garrett becomes available to be signed, it will be as a HC, and Jerry doesn't want to lose him.
I'll throw in a long-shot. Dan Reeves.
