like this one from "The 5 Man Electrical Band" This was really our little "we can be hippies, too" song in the early 70's. Peace, love, rock and roll.
"Signs"
(As recorded by Five Man Electrical Band)
LES EMERSON
And the sign said "long haired freaky people, needn't ought apply"
So I tucked my hair up under my hat, and I went in to ask him why
He said "you look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you'll do"
So I took off my hat, I said "imagine that, huh, me working for you!", woah
Sign, sign everywhere a sign
Blocking out the scenery breaking my mind
Do this don't do that can't you read the sign?
And the sign said "anybody caught trespassing would be shot on sight"
So I jumped on the fence and yelled at the house,
"hey what gives you the right?"
To put up a fence to keep me out, or to keep mother nature in
If God was here he'd tell you to your face: "man you're some kind of sinner!"
Sign, sign everywhere a sign
Blocking out the scenery breaking my mind
Do this don't do that can't you read the sign?
Now hey mister can't you read
You got to have a shirt and tie to get a seat
You can't even watch, no you can't eat, you ain't supposed to be here
Sign said you gotta have a membership card to get inside, ooh
And the sign said "everybody welcome, come in, kneel down and pray"
But when they passed around the plate at the end of it all,
I didn't have a penny to pay
So I got me a pen and a paper and I made up my own little sign
I said "thank you Lord for thinking of me, I'm alive and doing fine!", woah
Sign, sign everywhere a sign
Blocking out the scenery breaking my mind
Do this don't do that can't you read the sign?
Sign, sign everywhere a sign
Sign, sign

Here's another one, no lyrics though, you probably all know it.
American Pie, by Don McLean.
It was YEARS before we figured out it was about Buddy Holly. At that time, we did not know of the greatness that was Buddy. I remember long discussions about the meaning of the song. All pointless as it turns out. With MTV, we would have been robbed of that experience as it would have featured the man in half the scenes and erased any doubt about meaning.

Let me know if you find out. There is a small hotel near Pisa, Italy, that sits way off the road and has a pink and turquoise sign. Yep, it's the "Hotel California." In three years, nobody I knew ever went down that driveway!

Yep, same song for me too. I was about 10-12 when it came out. It was probably the first song that made me tear up when I heard it. It was the first that made me think about the words and how they might relate to my life.
Let It Be, by the Beatles, had a similar effect on me around the same time in life.

Let it Be - heard it for the first time while I was sleeping and my radio was on. I was 9 years old and I thought I was dreaming the whole song and then I heard it again later - it was just one of those songs that has stuck with me - never get tired of it. Mother Mary in the song is his mother who died of breast cancer when he was 14 years old, right before he met Lennon.
Also:
And So It Goes - Billy Joel
Lullaby - Billy Joel
Beautiful Boy - John Lennon
Imagine - John Lennon
Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney
Still the One - this was one of our class songs in high school
Freebird - the main class song
Running on Empty - yet one more from the class of 78.

When I first heard "The Spirit of Radio" it started what is now a 27 year fascination with RUSH. I was a freshman hanging out around the pickup of a Senior in HS when I heard that song. He had a great audio system. I was hooked! The more I listened to their catalog of music the more I loved it. I bought every new album they released the day it was released and I think I have only missed one tour since then. Made up for it though seeing the "Test for Echo" tour twice! Their musicianship and lyrics are just phenomenal. So for me… it was more than a song… it was a band.

'Hot For Teacher' by Van Halen really speaks to me. :D Reminded me of my high school freshman English teacher at Dobie H.S.. What a Babe. Met her again at a Katy playoff game vs Dobie and her daughter was on the Bengal Brigade drill team. Small world.
CyFallsMom....I thought Mother Mary was a nun?
I thought 'Hotel California' was a place that Satanists met at?
'Radar Love' was the tune always blaring on my 8-track when going to the beach in Galveston.
This is a song that I took seriously at a young age...my mom would even get mad when my dad let me listen to it...I STILL listen to it...as a matter of fact is my profile song on MYSPACE....
Gigolos Get Lonely Too
I guess U've heard of my reputation
I've had my share of foolin' around
But everybody needs stimulation
And mine just happens 2 be all over town
It's an easy-money occupation
First-class psychiatry
But just once, I'd wanna make love without taking off my clothes
Just once, I wanna make love with somebody who really and truly knows
CHORUS:
Contrary 2 rumor
Gigolos get lonely 2
All my lovers need stimulation
But honey babe, I think that I need U
Maybe U're the kind of person
That could turn my world around
Oh, won't U gimme a little inspiration
Maybe that's what I need 2 make me settle down
It's an easy-money occupation
But honey, one thing understand
I've got more money than U could imagine in your wildest dreams
But honey, money don't make no happy man
CHORUS
(Listen)
Just once I wanna make love without takin' off my clothes
Just once I wanna make love with somebody who knows
That I got more money than U could ever see
But honey, money won't get me up off my knees
Gigolos get lonely 2
All my lovers need stimulation ([Ooh stimulate])
But honey babe (honey babe), I think that I need U (I need U)
CHORUS
What cha gonna do, baby?
Oh, what cha, what cha gonna do?
Hey, what cha gonna do, baby?
Oh, what cha, what cha gonna do? (Oh)
Ah, do U think we could have dinner sometime, baby? {fade out}
Well, how about 2 night?
Baby?

OK, I've got to edit my previous post. "The Ballad of the Green Berets" came out before the other two I listed and it truly moved me. I was probably 8 or so. "The Green Berets" was the first movie I ever saw in a theater. It still makes me tear up at the end.
BTW, did you ever notice the blooper at the end of the movie. John Wayne is walking on the beach at sunset with the little kid and looking of into the sun setting in the ocean in the distance. Vietnam, in the area they were in, only has an eastern beach. You can only look at a sunrise over the ocean in Vietnam. Just proves it was shot in California with it's western beaches.

I don't know the real interpretation of Hotel California, but my impression was that the guy died on that highway that night and he was going through Purgatory on his way to Hell.
"you can check in, but you can never leave".

It reminded me of the "Twilight Zone"...when I used to hear it, I always pictured guys going into the hotel and the hotel was stuck in time....every time you go in you get younger....but purgatory is a good guess also

The song really isn't about anything according to Glenn Frey. His quote from a radio interview a few years back was: “we were listening to a lot of Steely Dan records at the time and were impressed with the way that they could make ‘junk sculpture' lyrics about nothing and make them work into a song.”
The song is a great narrative tale about decadence (pink champagne) and mysticism (a spooky dungeon-like house) and even botany (the smell of colitus!), but it certainly has no realm in fact.
Don Felder brought the rough guitar track to Henley/Frey and asked them if they could do anything with it. This is unusual in that songs by them were typically written the other way around. It serves as an interesting note that further proves that they did some serious ad-libbing and probably got the booze and drugs flowing before they wrote this song.
The album on the whole is all about the southern California lifestyle at that time (Life In The Fast Lane, Last Resort) and shouldn't be looked at in any other way.

Man, that's what's so great about music, it's very personal. No matter that I now know it means, literally, nothing, it will still represent the end result of bad living and poor life choices to me.
Music is very powerful.

I first loved the song "Witch Hunt" by Rush because of the incredible drumming by Neil Peart. Then I really listened to the lyrics which I found to be very profound.
"Witch Hunt" from the Landmark Album "Moving Pictures".
The night is black, without a moon.
The air is thick and still.
The vigilantes gather on
The lonely torchlit hill.
Features distorted in the flickering light,
Faces are twisted and grotesque.
Silent and stern in the sweltering night,
The mob moves like demons possesed.
Quiet in conscience, calm in their right,
Confident their ways are best.
The righteous rise
With burning eyes
Of hatred and ill-will.
Madmen fed on fear and lies
To beat and burn and kill.
They say there are strangers who threaten us,
Our immigrants and infidels.
They say there is strangeness to danger us
In our theatres and bookstore shelves,
That those who know whats best for us
Must rise and save us from ourselves.
Quick to judge,
Quick to anger,
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand.

It was Kate.
You got it within the first 2 guesses. To all the youngsters on the board...notice how Pack08 had to go through such a long list. That's right....big pimpin' baby.
I should have known something was wrong with Kate....She showed up at Kyle Field for the Lufkin/Killeen playoff game with an aggy t-shirt on.
There are 2 things wrong with that...the obvious one is an aggy shirt and you're my girlfriend?? The second one is Killeen's colors were maroon...why the hell would you the other team's colors?
If you're out there...you're a skank and karma will get you if it hasn't already.

Song got my team amped tonight, we were close in a game we should have been out scored heavily. I got the ol' Gordie Howe Hat Trick (goal, assist, and a penalty) tonight in my first game in a year, so I am pretty excited about that. Even though I am going to argue my penalty for a while, I know nothing can be done about it.
So if you excuse me, after two games today, I am going to go sit in the tub and die.
