Grapevine is 2-0, they beat Arlington 56-49 in Overtime and Flower Mound 41-36. They return a 4th year senior QB. Can they take the 3rd playoff spot in 5-5A that seems to be up for grabs?

I say pretender. They have had close calls in both games against mediocre at best teams, and its evident the loss of their best two defensive coaches including their defensive coordinator to Bell has hurt them. Apart from Southlake and Denton Ryan(who I think is over rated), 5-5A is pretty weak this year. In 2002, this district was pretty much the same(throw out SLC/Denton Ryan, add Bell/Trinity) and it was in a down year. The 3rd playoff spot was decided by whoever showed up for 3rd as Trinity/Colleyville mowed down everyone else to take the first two spots, like Carroll/Denton Ryan should do this year. Grapevine should beat Richland, but that is the only freebie in 5-5A and the other teams they all can beat but all can lose to as well. It's out on a limb but I think experienced Haltom will take the 3rd spot out of 5-5A this year. Grapevine will lose close, high scoring games this year and they don't seem to fit the part.

Grapevine better hope the defense shows up someday...the teams that hung those points on them are not offensive powers....The thing that intrigues me most is the possibility of Carroll going D-1....With DR, Grapevine, Haltom all being smaller if 2 of them go to the playoffs Carroll is D-1..that opens up a whole new set of matchups...if Carroll is fortunate enough to make the playoffs....

that opens up a whole new set of matchups...

I have a little smirk on my face, that would be great to play some teams that we would never get the chance to any other way.

I think GV is a pretty solid team. However, they lost to Flower Mound 36-41.

There are other teams in the district to also consider;

Heritage, after winning against a tough Cedar Hill team, is currently ranked 6th in the metroplex (5A) in avg offensive yardage and 14th in defense. Offensively, SLC is 1st, GV is 5th, and Keller is 12th. Defensively, Richland is 12th and Haltom is 20th. SLC is 33rd.

When all is said and done, 5-5A will have two teams that go far into the playoffs.

Did Flower Mound beat GV or did GV beat Flower Mound? The site says FM won but I've also heard that GV beat FM. Is there someone that can confirm this?

From the DMN:

FLOWER MOUND – In a shootout, Flower Mound outscored Grapevine 41 to 36 in a game that was not decided until less than a minute was left to play.
With one minute and eight seconds left, Grapevine scored to pull within 5 points. Grapevine recovered the ensuing on-side kick, only to be flagged for being offsides. They recovered the onside kick again at the 50 yard line to stay alive. After two incomplete passes, Flower Mound senior linebacker, Patrick Strodtman, intercepted Grapevine's quarterback, Steven Headley's pass to end the threat.

I wouldn't be suprised if G-Vine got into the playoffs, but i doubt they would be able to make any noise once they got there. Without the enormous Melton they just dont seem as scary or potent.

I kind of like Haltom the best for that last spot, however.

BTW......It is Richland, not Haltom, that is the 3rd school with lower enrollment than us. Haltom is actually the 2nd largest enrollment in 5-5A, behind Keller. :)

This may be the ultimate in "be careful what you wish for" but I want another shot at SLC and if Grapevine makes it then SLC goes D1. If Smithson Valley does win a state title I don't want the people on this board to say it was tainted. And they will.

I don't think GV will make the playoffs this year but I wouldn't call them pretenders. No team "pretends" to be good. If that was true then maybe SLC was faking how good they are this entire time.

Odd, the Fort Worth Star Telegram I am holding right now says Grapevine won 41-36. What to believe!?!?!

they lost, I have a couple senior friends on the Gravevine sqaud, they were all a little bit hurt after there loss...They are a good team, the best they have been in year (that surprising after lossing Henry Melton) but they have leaders on there team this year for a change..

Would there be possibility of a Trinity vs. SLC first round playoff? That is if SLC goes Div 1!!! :)

it is, A VERY big chance that Trinity will take on SLC in the first round if SLC goes DI...That could be interesting

gvine was better last year when their tumor wasn't playing and are better this year without him. he sucked the life out of everyone involved with the mustang program. no one could depend on anything he did except it would be half-hearted. the qb knew he would get no back-side protection, and thus had to have happy feet.

I guess there is a legit chance SLC could go div 1?? The only way Lufkin could go div1 is if Huntsville and Conroe Oak Ridge finish in the top 3 with Lufkin. Not going to happen!! They are both brutal!! Oak Ridge was a solid 4a team but they are having trouble competing on the 5a level.

Judson won't make it far enough to play SLC. Don't get your hopes up

Who's to say Carroll would make it far enough to meet Judson? I could see them getting knocked out first round.

there's a greater than zero chance of gvine squeaking in, but certainly not likely. until that happens, let's back away from pre-game predictions. it really would be a shame to have 2 of the top teams in the state meet in week one, but it has happened before. this would be the last year it can happen, however.

Hey d-daddy who is most likely to finish in the top 3 in yall's district?? SLC, DR?? maybe?? didn't they get shalacked by Highland Park?? and then who else Ridge?? I am just curious. I do not know a lot about your district besides SLC and Denton Ryan??

i wouldn't be surprised if there was a lot of gnashing of teeth over the tie breakers for po spots this fall. the fact that dr has backed up towards the pack is going to spell at least 2 losses for them. i wouldn't be surprised to see haltom come forward along with colleyville and keller to vie for a spot. fridge will be down, imo, and richland should stay down, though could spoil someone's bid. gvine has some spoiler in them too, but i doubt they will be in the hunt. four 3 loss teams after slc would not surprise me at all.

It wouldn't be tainted...you would prolly face wither Lufkin or Longview if you don't see SLC. Two pretty good teams.

So the only way SLC could go is if DR and Grapevine makes it?? I hope they do not go div1 and maybe my panthers can be lucky to have just 1 more shot at them. Lord i wish there was no such thing as div1 and div2. Irritating to say the least.

Is heritage supposed to be good? I know they won their first game and have a good QB, but will they be able to compete vs. the better 5-5A teams this year?

dragonsdaddy

they think their 7on7 will help propel them. as i said above, they should be in that group fighting for a po spot. 4-3 will get them in the lottery.

Colleyville is going to be benefitting from a generally weak middle and bottom of 5-5A this year. I don't think they are a great football team and even if they make it to the playoffs its going to be a round one exit to the 6-5A team they face.
