Someone brought this up in another post, so i thought I would make a thread of it...

Alot of schools have switched from Astroturf or grass to this new Grassyturf. Coppell High School was one of the first if not the first to install this new stuff back in the summer of 2000 when they rebuilt Cowboy Stadium. I personally like Astroturf better even though alot of linemen dont like it, I was a run blocker, so I pulled alot so it helped with my speed, I also like grass because Im a classic kinda guy. But Grassy Turf which I played on in almost every game except three my sophmore year on JV (two grass one astroturf).

What is your fav and why?

Its called Astroplay that grassy turf stuff. Copperas Cove was the first high school in Texas to install it which was about 4 or 5 years ago.

we installed it 5years ago, in 2000, I think we might have y'all beat or atleast we put it in at the same time

there are diffrent types of GrassyTurf, diffrent brands of it...One is called GrassyTurf, another is called REALgrass, im sure there are alot of diffrent names for it

SLC installed it in their new stadium which opened before the 2000 season.

Dick Blivins in Amarillo installed it in 98 or 99. They were the first in Texas.

I actually think the first HS to have it installed was Waco! I could be wrong but I thought I'd throw in my 2cents worth.

Anyway, as to why -- fewer injuries and decent footing even in inclimate weather!

This made for the first green football field in Amarillo. They planted a "leafy tree" right next to it so you'd know which way the wind was blowing!

Yeah, it really handles the wear & tear better than the grass fields...some of the grass fields are just dirt by the end of th season...

but i mean when your playing in the dirt its classic, its something I wish I could have exprianced more as a highschooler, i loved playing in the mud, and dirt during a football game, maybe thats just me being a linemen

Back when I played..there was no synthetic turf...we had rocks on the field that would hurt really bad, I mean really bad.....

I feel that Grassy Turf is the best when it is of high quality. I prefer the turf in dragon stadium over any other that I have played on. I would prefer natural grass over Coppell's and Waxahachie's turf.

I think that a good grass field is second to none. Chaparral staduim has had "astroturf" since like the early to mid 80's, and they redid it in like 2002, i dont like astroturf b/c of all the turfburns, i dont like astroplay because of those black pellets in it. What the hell are those for anyway?

i like the grassy turf they have at dragon stadium, its in such good shape, and its soft, great field, i assume there diffrent ways to maintain it, and it seems the dragon grounds crew do it the right way

I think some call it safeplay, we just install it this summer in Lufkin. Those little black pellets are rubber.

Katy installed it in 1960, the season after their first State Championship.
We were first!!

im still finding rubber from cowboy stadium from random places, and the last time I touched the field was the lat game of the season last year

Yeah, them rubber pellets are annoying. I think they are to pad the ground, so you don't land on the concrete which I think is directly below the turf. There might be a pad under the turf, but I don't think so. That rubber is annoying and my mom yells at me when I take off my shoes in the house and rubber comes pouring out. You think I'd learn to take them off outside...

I love the natural grass at Mustang-Panther stadium, the turf at Maverick Stadium was nice to run it but not nice to slide against with bare skin, and the astro play at Pennington/Irving Schools Stadium/Flower Mound/Gopher Bowl/Buddy Echols field is nice but not as nice as grass. My poll:

1. Grass
2. Astro Turf
3. Astro Play

I was living in Abilene when AISD installed this grassy turf. When the field was finished they had an open house and let anyone who showed up walk on the field. I thought that it felt like walking on a wrestleing mat and liked the stuff. I never heard any of the kids from Abilene High or Cooper complain about it either.

Lufkin just installed pro-style " REALGRASS" artificial surface this past summer, the same surface that was installed at Texas Stadium, Alamo Dome and Denton High School Stadium.

It is great, lots of rubber pellets at first, but excellent traction.

Better than grass.

Yeah, I mean all the pro teams have REALGRASS in there stadiums, no more Astroturf in the NFL

I was at Thorne Stadium in AldineISD when they redid the field from AstroTurf to that grassy turf stuff. It is so much nicer than Astroturf, and much softer to land on. Plus, it doesn't look like it faids as much as astroturf. Grass fields suck in wet weather. I remember being at Turner Stadium in Humble and sinking in the holes all over the field. Some of the worst were on the sidelines, not to mention the fact it was raining and it smelt like manuer the whole time....

the question wasn't who installed it first but what do u like better i think the astroplay is the best as far as less injuries and nothing more i'll take grass over the turf but i'm just and old school kinda guy

ill take grass over anything, because i mean i like getting down and dirty, I was an old school player for my high school, i never wore underarmor or new high fancy shoes, I wore two pairs of shoes my intire high school days, and they were all black/high top Pony football cleats. and on turf i would wear basketball shoes that had good trac.
