Hey Wide! You got any predictions?

09-05-2005, 11:23 PM
It's going to be one of the better games this season. And honestly I don't see Texas losing. I think this UT team is going to be tough for anyone to beat. And if they get some momentum...there will be a lot of blowouts this season. I will take a shot at a prediction though. Here goes....
THE University of Texas- 45
tOSU- 27
It's gonna be close most of the game though.

I've been reading both message boards. I'm trying to get a feel for this game. Nothing is coming to me real strong. At times, I'll get this fleeting thought of angst. I mean, this will be a huge game against an extremely tough opponent. It's in their backyard and they'll be pumped.
But then the pendulum swings back. Texas is 21-1 in road games since the loss to Stanford in 2000. We've won in hostile environments (Arkansas). We've overcome huge odds (Nebraska's 47 and 19 game winning streaks). We have arguably the best OL in the nation. We have a DL with 2 future first round picks. We have Vince Young. We have an All-American TE. We have a stable full of young running backs with different styles. We have Gene Chizik.
But again worry sets in. WTF is up with our kicking game? Will we be able to cover a kickoff? Will we be able to make a FG? Will we be smart enough to not punt to Ginn? Will Greg Davis fold under pressure?
I then remember that We're Texas, damnit.
Texas - 27
OSU - 21

I want whatever you are smoking if you think UT is going to put up 45 points on Ohio State it must be some good stuff. I predict OSU to win. They may not but if they don't they sure as hell won't give up 45 points. Let's be real now.

Good ol' Garlands Richmond McGee... my fond memory of him is missing a field goal against Allen during the 2000 playoffs... He is a great kickoff guy, but field goals and extra points are not his cup of tea... too bad Mangum is gone... :(

They need to let David Pino or Trevor Gerland handle the PATs.

I dont know if this is true, but didnt Dusty Mangum have a younger brother that was going to attend UT to kick as well? Im probably wrong as usual, but I think I remember seeing something about that.

Yeah wideouts lets be real, Texas scored 60 points in 3 quarters with the third team forsaken all else last week, but come on, when was the last time Vince Young scored over 40points. O yeah he scored 42 against Oklahoma State...in the second half??? Lets put it this way, Bobby Carpentar is a moron, Vince will still be a Heisman candidate this week, because hes that much better than everyone else.

Vince Young is a great player but if UT loses to OSU which they will VY will not win the heisman. There are a couple of people out there in California who will be in the running so you might want to rethink your statement. Lets see VY put up a big goose egg against OU last year if memory serves me. He can be stopped. 12 TD passes and 11 interceptions won't win the heisman and thats what he did last year. We will see about this year.

That was rediculous! That game was very exciting, and I really didn't see any way he could miss such a short kick....
I don't have a good feel for this game yet either, I don't think we learned alot about either team we didn't already know last weekend, I did expect OSU to handle Miami of OH a little easier than they did. I predict a close game. Texas could lose close, win close, or win big if that running game is as dominant as they looked last week. OSU doesn't have the offense to put up alot of points on the Texas D, but the OSU D may be good enough to keep it close, in which case it could come down to home field advantage, and they have to have a better field goal kicker than McGee?
The only thing I know for sure, is that there is no way I'm not glued to the set Saturday night!

If memory serves you correctly you will remember Ced fumbling on the 24 yd line, and Limas Sweed dropping a wide open TD in the 4th, Vince fumbled once too. Not to mention, that OU D had like6 players go to the NFL the next year, this OSU D will have 2, maybe 3. Since UT's offensive style changed he is a different player.

Get real man! Vondrell is great but don't act like he is just going to walk on campus and just take over at the tailback position. It doesn't always work out that way for people who are studs in High School Football. I am not saying he can't do it because anything is possible but nothing is guaranteed.

OSU should have just let TX score when there was 2:00 left. Get the ball back with time and go for an 8 point tie. Get into overtime.

UT was fortunate - I think fate had some dealings here - the ball bounced their way- but they definitely won it - OSU didn't lose it.

That was an awsome game! :D
Texas was sloppy on field position, and sloppy with the turnovers. Should have realized running wasnt gonna cut it earlier and started passing more in the mid-second quarter.
Hawk and Schlagle(sp) and 42 were amazingly good. Wasnt impressed with 7 had like one good return and a couple drops of what should have been easy money, UT shut him down. 4 was good too with returns and catching the ball.
I think they should have played 10 at QB the whole game, he generated their best offense.

Vince is a lot more patient than he was last season. He was always confident. Now he has (as Spectator said) poise.
Special teams looked horrible. It's been a problem since last season. Mack has got to find a way to fix it if the horns want to go all the way. And Melton definately has size. Now he just needs to learn how to use it.

Now come on?? Iowa usually beats Iowa st. and please do not act like Texas is so elite over the Big 10. They beat Michigan by 1 point and Ohio St by 3. Texas is the elite of the elite of the Big12 this year. I was glad i was wrong by the way but it took an easy dropped td pass and a missed fg for Texas to pull off the amazing victory at the shoe. You know it and i know it. Ohio st finished 4th in the Big 10 last year so that just goes to show you that you never know year to year. Iowa beat Ohio St 33-7 last year. What a difference a year makes. Winning at the shoe is different and i am a believer in Texas now but please quit acting like the Big10 is weak when they have had their way with the Big12. Bragging about a team from Iowa that is kind of funny also. Iowa St. has been Iowa's step child for a long time. Weird that Iowa st. is not in the Big 10 even though they are usually absolutely brutal?? That might have something this year after what i saw today but do not count the Hawks out. Road rival games are tough and Iowa's main man Drew Tate went out in the 2nd quarter. Oh, Notre Dame is not in the big 12 the last time i checked and the Big10 usually beats them besides Michigan the last 2 years. Before you get all giddy about the Big12 OU lost to TCU and almost lost to Tulsa and A&m lost to Clemson. Nebraska is nothing and the same goes for KSU and OSU. Minnesota, Purdue, and Penn st all look much better then those. Long long season to go and yall should know better after watching the Big10 win the majority of the contest vs Big12 opponents in bowls.

You are what your record says you are and a win's a win. Doesn't matter by how much or little. Texas did not get lucky. They WON this game. Period. It's true that Ohio St had some key dropped balls, but so did UT.
As far as Notre Dame goes, I'm not going to believe in them until they win a few more games. Back when Ty Willingham came in, they went 8-0 and we all know how that coaching stint ended.

Right now in week two you could be the big 12 in all their weakness a notch above the big 10. But you are correct about the Bowl games the Big 10 does have a sucess against Big 12 teams in bowl games or atleast OSU does. UT SHOULD have lost this game.. too many mistakes mentally on offense... When VY threw is first pick I was astonished.. there wasnt a UT player within 10 yards of Hawk... BIG mental mistake...
The defense for UT was outstanding... 3 turnovers amounted to 3 field goals... they get the MVP tonight...
Was a good win for UT, but they need to shore up that O for future games...

And pack0808 you sure were right.. the Shoe does make people play badly!
I think Vince was trying to throw the ball away.
Offense didn't play that well, but you've gotta contribute a lot of that to Ohio St's LBs. Those guys put on a clinic.

Very true about the OSU Lb's... absolute monsters!
But instead of throwing it away like that, VY should have just taken the sack.. big mental mistake...

Yeah, it's better to just take a sack instead of blindly throwing it up....and even better in certain situations it'd be good to just have the clock run.

Yeah, he should've taken the sack. I'm just glad he's able to shake off his mistakes.
The offense will start looking better as soon as Jamaal gets settled into it. I can't believe Mack actually tried running a reverse with a true freshman RB.

Sour grapes! Texas won and was in the game the whole way. Props to the Horns! Got down and FOUGHT the whole way. So much for the big 12 being underated. Vince for PREZ

He didn't pass into the plane of the endzone but went around....
Melton's dive was a TD. The goal line, in essence, goes all the way around the earth. If you dive from in bounds, and break that plane before touching out of bounds, it's a TD.
NCAA Rulebook
Section 11
Article 1
Each goal line is part of a vertical plane separating an endzone from the field of play when the ball is touched or is in player possession. The plane extends beyond the sidelines. A team's goal line is that which it is defending.
Section 2
Article 1. A touchdown shall be scored when:
a. A runner advancing from the field of play is legally in possession of a live ball when it penetrates the opponent's goal line (plane)

I was just a litte shocked that the refs didnt even take the time to review the play. I think that the play could be considered a "little" important.

Good Jesus we got so balls rowdy. After we pwned Ohio St. we all took the frat mobiles and caused mayhem on Guadalupe, Rio Grande (AWESOME) and elsewhere in west campus. God I love myself right now...

Yah, whomever they play USC or Va Tech, both programs have really solid their kicking / special teams. Va Tech is probably better imho, since that's like Coach Beamer's babay. I was very surprised that OSU held that advantage of almost 20+ yds in avg. starting position and failed to score more.
Also I never really liked swapping two QB's liked OSU did unless one was hurt, since GA Bulldogs did that with Greene and Shockley I believe and it hurt them more then it helped imho.

You kind had the feeling even though Texas's field goal banged into the up-rights and then rolled in for 3 points it was going to be their night.
And whats with the KICK off return coverage? Didn't this mishap occur in the Rose Bowl last year? They may have to Squib it down the rest of the year. At least the coverage can converge without spreading the field this way.

he never touched out of bounds he was in the air when the ball crossed the line
bowiedawgs01

He wasn't out of bounds. He was still carrying a LIVE football. He was inbounds and dove for the endzone. He crossed the plane outside of the pylon, but he was not out of bounds. By definition, he was still live. He had not made contact with anything outside the field of play. You know, kinda like in basketball when they jump out of bounds to save the ball before landing? Same exact thing.
garlandowl08

but the ball didnt crass the endzone plane before he hit the ground, from what I saw. He went too far to the left of the Pile-on and therefore could have still scored had he been able to reach around and go back in, but he didn't. No TD

he's a goofy freshman that looked like he was trying to showboat. he should have just lowered his shoulder and taken out that pylon and kept the refs out of it.
I'm sure the UT coaches have had a very LONG talk with him on that one.
I still contend that OSU should have let UT score when there was 2:00 left. It was going to happen, just give OSU the ball back with 1:45 left, 8 points down. they then have a chance of going into OT. the way UT worked the clock down, OSU had no time and pretty much no chance.
tressel would have looked like a genious. plus they would have had a chance to start that 1:45 with good field position.
Reaganrattler07
09-11-2005, 03:01 PM
Does it really matter if he touched it or not? Longhorn fans are obviously gonna say he touched the plane. Others say he didn't. Texas won, thats all that matters.

I don't think Melton was showing off. He just made a freshman mistake. Should've lowered his head. Both he and Charles made some freshman mistakes in that game.
And Tressell probably wasn't that confident in his team's ability to score. Texas D was did a great job last night.

Anyone who has seen this kid play in the last 3 years was not surprised by his antics at the end. Hopefully, his O-Line jerks a knot in him. Would not shock me at all if it's not the last dumb play seen by him.
The kid has always had talent... just not the brains or motivation. As I've posted before, if someone can ever figure out how to give him all three...they've found something.

I think people are reading into Melton's play way too much. I think his main issue is not realizing he weighs 270 pounds. From the way he plays sometimes, it looks like he thinks he's 170 with his light feet. The coaches will point that out on film I'm sure and say "next time we run this play, square up and destroy anyone with the nerve to get in your way..."

Texas is a GOOD team...Those rb's are gonna get better...I always KNEW VInce could throw the ball....he showed the world. If someone would have said Texas would turn the ball over 3 times...OSU would have like 90 drives starting inside their 40 and UT would win....IN THE HORESHOE...AT NIGHT....I would have said they were joking. OU, TTECH and A&M......get pass those guys and they have a shot. I think Cal beats USC this year.

I agree. USC played a horrible Hawaii team. Their biggest tests are going to be Cal, @Oregon and most importantly............@ NOTRE DAME!!!!!!
That will be the most televised game this year!!!!!!(Even more so than the Rose Bowl.)
ND beat a solid Michigan team. They have many tasks ahead of them....Purdue, USC and Tennessee. But that USC game in, oddly enough, October will be the game that USC fears. Especially if ND beats Purdue the previous week.
Texas is the real deal....and if USC falls to ND during the regular season, there might be a Texas vs Notre Dame NC game. How scary, huh!!! During the season, the SEC teams may knock each other off, as usual...so will the ACC teams. The Big Ten, most likely, blew their chances last week....so if UT and ND go undefeated, wow...look out Rose Bowl!!
I'm an OU Sooner fan, but if this is the Longhorns year, I'm all for it!!!!
Kudos to Vince! As a person that followed him in High School...this guy has come a long way mentally. I always knew he had talent but I doubted he would make it because of his attitude. If you saw him in High School you know what i am talking about. Arguing with coaches, throwing helmets...un-sportman like conduct.....he's matured alot. I always knew he was a passer and more than just a running QB....the rest of the worls knows now.

Looked to me like he just over threw Ramonce Taylor...
It was actually Jamaal Charles and both he and Vince made a mistake. Vince was just trying to do too much. I will never be hard on a guy for trying too much, but I do wish he would learn how to throw the ball away from time to time. I think Charles is also a little to blame. He stood there as if he thought the ball was going to someone else. He has to (and will) learn where everyone is out on the field and he will learn that in situations like that, he is Vince's lifesaver out there. If Jamaal would have gone after the ball, he may not have caught it because it was overthrown, but he may have been able to at least knock it down preventing it from being intercepted.
However, did anybody take notice of what Jamaal did at the end of that play? He flat leveled AJ Hawk at the end of that play. Jamaal is one tough sob. Check it out...
