UPDATE: Lakeland star faces FHSAA scruitny
By: Sara Dorsey
Florida - He's number three on the field, but star running back Chris Rainey and his touchdowns are number one with Lakeland fans, a point apparently evident on the streets if you believe Rainey's own words to a reporter from the Miami Herald.
Rainey:
Everybody knows me now. I'm getting free stuff. And they're real nice.
Reporter:
Really? What do people give you?
Rainey:
Like clothes, food, all kinds of stuff.
Reporter:
Like when you walk around town?
Rainey:
Yeah, when I walk around, people are buying me food, 'hey how ya doing,' giving me money. I'm like, damn. I'm glad I'm Chris Rainey. It's real nice to be me.
All of that free stuff could violate the Florida High School Athletic Associations amateurism bylaw, which says a student who accepts gifts or donations for participating in a sport is disqualified.
Rainey's now under investigation and football Booster Rob Myers worries about talk that Rainey could be pulled from Friday's game.
Rob Myers, Lakeland High school Football Booster:
People are concerned, they are concerned for Chris, they are concerned for the football team.
Rainey's attorney Robert Puterbaugh issued a letter saying, "...statements made by Chris were not meant by him to be taken seriously and were made by him in a joking manner and not as fact."
Booster Tom DiCesari says he hopes the focus will return, by Friday, to Miami and the shot at a third consecutive national championship for the Lakeland Dreadnaughts.

I think not! Since SLC was a consensus pick in 2004 and the pick in many polls in 2005, Lakeland cannot be going for 3 in a row.

In my opinion....
Regardless of what the lawyer or star athlete says, this was a form of gloating. "Look what I've got...I'm a bada--!"
This kid grew up in the informational age, just like everyone else. There's a reason others - whether they do it or not - don't come out and talk about it....especially to the press. To me, it seems like a way of life down there. I'd be willing to bet, this is the type of kid Coker would've brought into Miami, and in a few yrs of off-the-field distractions most would be saying "What's the deal with this kid, Rainey? Why does he act like a punk?" If you follow Clarrett, from HS, you'll see he had a pattern of wanting more attention...and it got worse every year.
I'm not saying this Rainey kid is a menace, I'm just saying there's a reason this kid came out and said what he said. He was obviously comfortable with his position and surroundings, which probably spells deeper trouble for Lakeland....and maybe Florida Prep 'ball, period.

"The attorney went on to say that Chris unequivocally denies having accepted any gift or donation for participation in any sports activity."

The Florida version of the UIL is allowing the school to make the decision as to whether Chris Rainey plays in Friday night's state championship game. If the ruling comes down that Rainey is ineligible then Lakeland will probably have to forfeit quite a few games. Lakeland has another RB who is also a top 100 player so I'd say they would be OK without Rainey.

Probably depends on your perspective regarding the useless national polls. 3 consecutive national championships or not for Lakeland rose colored glasses still doesn't mean they could stay on the field with SLC or any of the other top teams in Texas for that matter.

They act the same way in college as high school. Lakeland is up around Orlando, but this is a Miami-type player. I like Galloway. I've been listening to him since the 80's when he did "Sports at 6" on WBAP 820, long before they had all-sports stations. He was writing for the Dallas Morning News at that time. They still had Blackie Sherrod and even got Skip Bayless from the Dallas Times Herald (I have the last paper they published). A lot of people have come and gone from Dallas media over the years. Marc Stein used to be the Mavs beat writer at DMN and Ivan Maisel used to be the college guy at DMN.

My dad had many things he collected over his years and one of the things that I took when he passed was the last edition ofthe Dallas Times Hearld. We also used to listen to Galloway on WBAP all the time. I was glad when ESPN got him but sad too because they took Coop's show off the air and Coop knows more about sports than just about anyone in the nation. His show was centered all around sports and was awesome. I called in a few times and got to express my opinion on a fewthings. In my opinion though when it comes to Dallas Sports media Randy Galloway is the authority due ot his longevity here in the metroplex.

Galloway is the current king. He followed in the footsteps of Jim Reeves and Blackie Sherrod. I won't say Dale Hansen no matter how long he's been around.
I like Coop. He's been around Dallas for a long time, too. He can rattle a lot of things off the top of his head.

SLC was #1 in 5 out of 6 national polls in both 2004 and 2005. At this moment, SLC is #1 in two polls and has the highest average ranking of any team in the nation. Lakeland is #1 in three polls and DeLaSalle is #1 in one poll.

That was a beguiled mom from zzzzzhigh school that fanned that flame, sounding like it ruined her life forever. She was out to make an impact on her community, and she sure did. (I hope never to be remembered for being viewed by my community as acting so small in such a huge way). And SLC thinks they have had some toxic neighbors in their years....sheeesh...

Most of the kids that Miami gets from the local area are big into gang life. They act the same way in college as high school. Lakeland is up around Orlando, but this is a Miami-type player. I heard a story last week from a woman about her son who used to be at Miami and how the players were bragging about what color BMW's they were going to get.
Sorry if this has already been said in this thread, but Lakeland isn't up near Orlando, it's right next to Tampa.
Go check out a map.

Among other locales it is identified in the "Grapefruit League" where the Detroit Tigers play their preseason ball; like Kissimmee/ Astros.

Really.
So what is your take on why the strong Lakeland football program for so long? They aren't a recruiting school; no real estate draws that I know of.
At first I wondered if they wrestled gators during practice to keep in shape.

There are plenty of athletes in the area that Lakeland HS draws from. If I remember right, there are only 2 high schools in the city: George Jenkins HS and Lakeland HS. Jenkins draws from the kids outside of the city of Lakeland, while Lakeland takes most of the inner city kids (aka athletes). So, if you want compare it to here, it's much like Jenkins HS = KISD and Lakeland HS = HISD. Couple that in with the fact that LHS has a decent coaching staff and plenty of tradition.
I haven't been there in quite a while. I know my dad just got back from Tampa/Lakeland last night and he said it was all over the news and on the front page of the Ledger. This Rainey kid is a moron of the worst kind. The principal is allowing him to play tonight (I think they're playing tonight), I guess thats what happens when you get a system of rules not named the UIL.
Lakeland is much like everyother school outside of Texas thats continually ranked; Good athletes, decent to poor coaching. Lakeland, from what I've been told would crack the top 15 in Texas, but I think that's as far as they go.

SLC was unanimouse in 04 and last year lacked only the usa today. every other major poll had SLC #1 in 05. this BS about 3 in a row is completely false:mad: . they might be able to argue 2 in a row, but if all but 1 nationaly respected poll had slc in 05 im pretty sure it goes to SLC.
i also belive that bit about Lakeland maby cracking the top 15 in TX is true. TX does not have some rag tag thugs on our teams. we are good, well diciplined teams. Lakeland would not stand a chance against SLC, Katy, Trinity, Lufkin or any other good program.

Lakeland also has Kathleen High. That's where Ray Lewis went.

Rainey looked like he separated his shoulder in the title game that Lakeland won in 2OT 45-42. He had over 280 yards rushing before getting hurt in the 1st OT. He still played the 2nd OT.

ESPNEWS showed highlights of this great game. Reminded me a little of the Plano East-John Tyler game. Anyhow, St. Thomas Aquinas scored a TD and then proceeded to recover an onside kick. Score another Touchdown. Still down by a touchdown. Another onside kick...ANOTHER ONSIDE RECOVERY. St. Thomas Aquinas scored a touchdown again!
First overtime ended being even.
Second overtime. Lakeland gets a field goal. On 4th and goal for St. Thomas Aquinas, the RB tries to go in and is stopped 1 FOOT short...maybe. If he would have just stretched the ball just for a brief second, the ball would have crossed the plane and would have been the winning score.
Damn, that was close!

If our high school ball is so superior, and I believe from top to bottom it is, by a long shot, then what happens from high school to college?
