The LD Bell Band Booster President was MISQUOTED by the Star Telegram.

The Booster President and Band Director are understandably frustrated
with the Star Telegram and the Director will be demanding a
correction next week.

I heard the Band Director say that in 9 years of Star Telegram
quotes, seldom has his original words/context or intent been
represented accurately.

He also mentioned that he asks for a copy of the article before it
goes to press to check for accuracy, but the only reporter who has
honored those wishes was Jennifer Arend from the Dallas Morning News.

The Director also said that the kids in the band, staff, and parents,
as well as the whole school are looking forward to a great football
season and are particularly excited about the presence of the new
Head Football Coach, Gary Olivo.

I don't buy that in the least -- I believe what was quoted is basically what was said -- then the heat starts and she is backtracking -- a strong apology is in order -- not lame excuses...

It may be a misquote, but still it is believable because it is true. It does happen, and based on how the band responded to our victory Friday Night hopefully that means the band is going to be more respectful now on. However Friday night it seemed as if only more people came rather than leave after halftime.

Read page 3 of Friday's FW Star-Telegram Star Time and you will find the retraction. Now you know why it's called the Startlegram.

As someone who has been involved with both organizations over the past few years, I can tell you that no one supports BELL Football on Friday nights more than the band director Mr. Earnhardt. He may not be able to control the minds and mouths of others, but he is a class act and unfortunatley the BAND IS BETTER than the football team over the past few years. LD BELL is rich in tradition and will be again. It just not time for the football time this year. If someone is better than you are, say it, get better or move on. Please trust me when I say that I am one of the biggest supprters of Bell football over the past several years, but as I sais the band deserves the credit. That being said...........NO ONE has the right to say what was said and I do believe it was said, it happens every game and will continue to happen until we put a decent product out there on the field on Friday nights. If the football team could practice for all day long for three weeks, they might get better to. but UIL governs that and they do not with band yet.......

Bands are governed by UIL rules. Either you are unaware of this or the band is practicing too much.

Bands can practice more, it just has to be the will of the band to do so. And since it is the LD Bell Band, I bet they are willing to.

Oh, and also. The 3 weeks thing she was refering to was Summer Band(before school is in session, when UIL has no control)

Which is exactly why some Directors are getting pissed at the UIL. The Bell Band hands out the music for their halftime shows before Summer and practice so much during it that those kids don't have much of a life. I don't agree with their philosophy and think that the UIL should be able to govern Summer Band as much as it does Summer Football.

I do agree about Mr. Earnhardt. After our win against Bowie, he told the band on his megaphone to give us a standing ovation. After our loss against North Mesquite Friday, he was telling us to not put our heads down, practice on what we need to practice such as turnovers and we will be allright for Flower Mound, and told the band to give us applause anyway. However with that being said, one of his assistants whose name I can't put a finger on had the Mega Phone on last year when we were playing SGP at the Gopher-Warrior Bowl. He was not saying very nice things about our team.

during the summer, band practice is pretty much unlimited. once school begins, there is an eight hour per week rule. the only exception to that rule is you receive an hour practice per extra event, ie, run-throughs for football games, parade practices, etc.

believe me, summer practices aren't half as bad as after school practices in the heat of the day. oh, and if bell's band is practicing more than eight hours a week, it's because they dropped out of UIL to focus solely on BOA (bands of america) events, which are the bigger competitions for highschool marching.

Band practices alot more then football...Trust me, My boo (yes im refering to my girlfriend for you old timers on the board :p ) is in band, and I often pick her up from band practice at least an hour and half after football gets out. I respect the band, they work extreamly hard, and im sure its the same way at LD Bell and other good Schools where there band is a top band in the state...
But for me to say, that I worked harder in football then the band does, is crazy, Band worked so much harder to prepare its self for a show then most football teams do for a game

Yes, by UIL rules, the 8 hour practice rule doesn't go into effect until Aug. 21. This makes the playing field uneven as school districts start on different dates. Katy started school on Aug. 10 and started their post Aug. 21 sessions then. In order to keep up with other schools that start later, they would be practicing into the night.
As a parent, I like the Katy philosophy. When they practice, they work as hard as anyone. It's just not as much. (Mhs06 - I think you mean't to say "the will of the band directors")

there is no rule about aug. 21 being the date where this rule goes into effect. both my parents and I sign a sheet every year stating uil rules - all that's stated is that "no student may be required to attend practice for more than eight hours a week based on an academic calendar"

"But for me to say, that I worked harder in football then the band does, is crazy, Band worked so much harder to prepare its self for a show then most football teams do for a game"

that, by the way, is something that is very pleasing to hear. several football players from my school last year would try and tease us and tell us we were whimps who did no physical activity.. it's nice and refreshing to know that some football fans still appreciate what we do, especially since we do spend time at football games supporting the team when we could be practicing for our own competitions :) (not that I mind at all, considering I'm in love with football)

Look on the UIL website. That's where Aug. 21 comes from.

To my knowledge, the band and football players work EQUALLY hard (at least at Katy). It might vary at other schools.

Spring Westfield, which has one of the top bands in the state, chose not to abide by the 8-hour rule last year to better compete in Bands of America competitions. Bands from other states that compete at BOA events don't have the Texas UIL 8-hour rule, and our bands tend to do well against them anyway. That says a lot about the quality of marching band programs in Texas. By practicing more than 8 hours weekly, Westfield was not able to compete for the state title last year.

Should have thought about whats better for the kids. I was aware that Spring Westfield did that. Its not about contests...its about music education.
