4A Div-II Quarterfinals: La Marque vs Texas City - Battle by the Bay, Part II

For the first time in their history, the Texas City Stingarees will play their hated cross-town rival, the La Marque High Cougars, in the Playoffs.

Tale of the Tape...

Texas City Stingarees
(10-3)

Led by the returning 2005 leading district rusher, Jarvis Carraway, Texas City has an offense that has forced 439 pts, and defensively allowed 223 pts. In the last 2 Playoff games they've scored 80 pts. They upset both (10-1) Dayton and a team that was favored by many to be State Finalists, in Brenham (11-1). Texas City's defense forced 7 turnovers, 4 coming in the form of interceptions. They made LSU bound QB, Jarrett Lee, look average.

Total Offensive Production: 4774 yds/56 tds
Offense avg's 366.4 yds per game and 37.1 pts.
Defense allows an avg of 221.4 yds per game (57 yds rushing) and 17 pts per game.

Players to watch...

QB - Brandon Robinson = Pass: 808 yds/5 tds Rush: 1141 yds/19 tds
RB - Jarvis Carraway = Rush: 1775 yds/18 tds (7.7 yds per carry) (Rushed for 237 yds/2 tds, last week vs Brenham)
WR: Whitney Prevost = 2 tds (Is one of the Top 10 Track & Field athletes, in the Nation. Holds National records - for any level, along with Texas City Track Team. Committed to Baylor, for Track & Field.)
DB - Johnny Thomas = 9 Ints
LB - Stephen Guyton (only 5'10 210 lbs...but he hits like a train.)
LB - Michael Ray = 2 ints (Both against LSU bound, Jarrett Lee.)
DE - Richard Wilburn (6'1 255 lbs.....explosive, powerful punisher, with 11 sacks.)
DT - Sean Warren = 7 sacks (313 lbs...Mini-Casey Hampton)

4 300-Pounders and 10 players 245 lbs and heavier. They have 7 players that run a 4.45 or better. The Stings also have 9 different offensive players with 1 td, or more. (4 WR's, 1 QB and 3 RB's) Their only lost came to Lake Travis, on a last second interception returned for a td. Their best win was against 5A Brenham (11-1), in which they won 45-35, last week.

La Marque Cougars
(12-1)

Their offense has forced 443 pts, and the defensively has allowed 150 pts. Last week they beat Houston Yates 46-0.

Total Offensive Production: 4811 yds/59 tds
Offense avg's 369.2 yds per game and 37.3 pts per game.
Defenisvely they've allowed 227 yds per game (63 rush yds) and 12 pts per game.

Players to watch...

QB - Jarius Keriegan = Pass: 574 yds/5 tds Rush: 206 yds/6 tds (In 3 gms.)
QB - Dunkelyn Haynes = Pass: 1436 yds/20 tds Rush: 580 yds/5 tds

DB - James Thomas - 2 Ints
DE - Raphael Guidry - 6'4 255 (Explosive, Powerful)

La Marque has 9 different offensive players that has, at least, 1 td. Has 6 different players that have, at least, 1 int.

In closing....
This will be a very nasty game, folks. There aren't very many times when you'll see 2 DISTRICT-RIVAL teams meet 4 rounds deep in the playoffs. Both teams have gotten better, since they met nearly 6 weeks ago. Texas City seems to be playing on all cylinders, as they've reeled off 2 overly impressive wins against very tough opponents. La Marque seems to be riding the normal lure of itself, in believing they just cannot be stopped, if they play to their highest potential. Overall, there will be more than 6 Division-I prospects playing in this game.

Where: GPISD Stadium
When: Saturday, Dec. 9th @ 2:00 PM

Haynes was the QB suspended. Yes, he just came back, last week, against Yates. But he doesn't start, anymore. He played...and actually scored, but now the Keriegen kid is the starting QB.

The name threw me off...I think Keriegan's older brother was QB the last time the won state.

Yes, he was. This is going to be a good one. I don't think many (if any) of you guys have seen Texas City play, this year. Defensively they aren't huge in size, but they're veryyy scrappy. And they've gotten better, every single week.

I think most people will say La Marque will win, because they recognize the name, but I think TC will shock alot of people this weekend.;)

72 hrs and counting....

.....nearly 2 months ago, Texas City fumbled the ball 4 times (3 lost...one of them was inside TC's 5 yd line) and La Marque capitalized on those turnovers, scoring 14 pts. The final score was 24-14.

Without the turnovers, who knows what the score could've been.

There are 7 district rematches this weekend statewide in Quarterfinal games... that's got to be close to a record if it isn't one.

Most of them are teams that dropped down from 5-A

Although 4a, this is probably gonna be the game of the week. Not only a district rematch, but two communities that are bitter rivals butted up next to one another. Neighbor vs. neighbor. A definite can't miss.

Absolutely! Already got tickets! (Tuesday morning.) It's funny...Texas City was only allowing those who have an ID - showing they live (address) in Texas City - to buy tickets. I wonder if La Marque is doing the same thing?

I thought it was pretty weird. There was a guy that was turned away, even though he had a business in Texas City.....he lived in Clear Lake.

Texas City isn't classless - for the most part - but that was definitely a bonehead move.

A friend of mine works in the area, and he tried to get us tickets, but they were already sold out. There are a great number of peeps that are gonna stay in hotels. This is gonna be insane.

SOLD OUT! Already?! Whoa! (Obviously, they'll sell some tickets at the gate?)

I agree, the atmosphere will be splendid.

I am committed to go to the Katy-Cy Falls game, but this will be one hell of a game to witness.

I like Texas City's chances in round II.

I'm sure they will. Gonna have to test that expanded seating before the college all-star game. My boy can't get any work done. Every where he goes, people are talking about this game. It's spread all the way to Galveston.

Who's your boy? Does he play? Have you heard any rumbles, within the TC/LM community?

Texas City goes down to La Marque, today, 38-10. LM just had too many speedy athletes. They have some great size, power and athleticism.

On the second play of the game, TC's RB - Jarvis Carraway - broke a 70 yd td run. It was all down hill from there.

Congrats to TC for a surprising season, with a 10-4 record and having advanced thru the playoffs to the 4th round.

Goodluck to La Marque, on their State Title run. I'm picking them to play Waco for the title.

Folks from that part of the state don't believe they can hang with 5a based on a 17 year old game. Go figure.

Pretty one-sided battle in this one today. LaMarque is flat out tough!
