Yes, we all know Ike will not make a run at the state game this year - but what you're seeing from Lufkin faithful for the next few days is simply us purple-shaded folks picking our jaws up off the new Abe Martin turf. Last night was simply the most shock and awe opener I've ever seen for several reasons, here are 5.

1) What can I say regarding my previous ******** comments on the offense. These guys will get it done this year. Yes, the wr corp is not only the fastest in the state, but the most dangerous - enough said. Dez Bryant will catch 8-10 "jump ball" td's this year. Claybon's receptions to int ratio will be ugly - so will his percentage completion ratio - doesn't matter - they will produce big plays and plenty of points.

The O line are all juniors and they are under-sized, quick and plenty good. Coach Earley has his 5 in the right spots - and there are plenty of backups. I think what happened on the line is he was simply trying to get the seniors to perform and they just weren't quite there - it's all juniors.

The fact is - Lufkin is now finally running a true spread after the Lane train finally pulls out of town for good. Don't get me wrong - we road him for all he was worth and it was a great ride - but the true Panther spread could become lethal.

2) Jaime Fernandez will be one of the most recruited kickers in the nation next year.

3) Mandela Roberts could set the school record for tackles and sacks - if he plays enough. He had 5 sacks last night and would have probably had 8 if he had played all night - he sat down after 2.5 quarters. That is sacks, not tackles folks. How many lb's do you know that ran on the 400 meter relay? And, we're talking about a pretty fast relay squad to begin with. Mandela should be first team all state if he remains healthy.

4) This is the fastest D I have ever seen. I honestly can't remember that much about the Carter team from '88 -- and I know the GP NorthSHore squad from '03 was awesome. But, LP's D is simply off the charts on closing speed and aggressiveness. Coach Quick is utilizing the new proto-type D that I guess Billichek started in New England. My only concern about the D is guys getting injured because their motors run so fast. There is quickness, there is fast, then there is reckless abandon fast that is simply relentless - that is LP's D.

5) Clifton Kibble is plenty good at running back. No, he won't gain 2,000 yards this year - but he may score 20 3 yard run TD's - he had 3 last night. He will get the job done.

Lufkin class of 08 has this in his signature:

"Lufkin Football 2001 5A division 2 state champions
Lufkin Basketball 1979 State Champs
Lufkin Baseball 1963 State Champs"

Are you really bragging about 3 state championships in 42 years? I know a few schools that would almost fill the computer screen if they listed all of their championships over the same period.

What if he is? Big deal. It is not like he is speaking for all Lufkin fans anyway. Is that your way of saying that you could list all of SLC's championships? You guys have a great history but in the end the past does not win championships in the present. No doubt your team could win again this year but why point out what one person puts in his signature as a way to make fun of him? Show a little class. After all ya'll are the defending state champs and mythical national champs.

Well you know how some fans can get euphoric over one game. Most LP fans are a little more level headed, but hey, I wouldn't want to curb these guys enthusiasm. The season is just getting started, and alot can happen. I was at the Coppell / SLC game last night. The well oiled SLC machine appears to be finely tuned once again. The fans are in mid season form as well......had a nice overflow crowd last night. I don't think this team is quite on the level of the past two (mainly due to the loss of Luna and Daniel), but a slight drop off from the past ain't bad. I still expect SLC to be there in the end, and should LP and SLC meet along the way, I will be there once again. Good luck to you guys.

Um...I think he drives a Mercedes....& it's clean... ;) Carroll has probably won more obscure State championships (golf, tennis, swimming, etc) in one year than Lufkin has total, but what really matters is that the Dragons have never lost to Lufkin at anything, ever, period...could this be the year? You are dead wrong. When it comes to being humble decent human beings with class, you lose!!!! In life that is what matters as the years go by not what kind of championships you won. In the end you will have to answer for your pride, arrogance, and lack of humility. School pride is one thing but the kind of pride and boasting that you have is sickening. I know there are some good people at SLC and I am sure it is embarrassing for them to have people like you in their midst.

If SLC fans do not realize they were in 2 absolute dog fights when they played Lufkin they are in denial. In 2002 the Gods were with them and they know it!! If slc played Lufkin 10 times i would say Lufkin would win 4 but that is just my opinion. Yes i agree the signature is a little silly but he is just proud of his school. I went off on him when i first saw it but then i was like oh well.

If you look back at my post, I was having fun with my old friend Favpack, about his comment "go wash your Volvo". I think the Carroll vs. Lufkin rivalry, if 2 games makes a rivalry, is one of the healthiest in the State. The reason is simple, both schools respect the heck out of each other, as do all of their many fans, including me. Sometimes when you try and have a little fun, you stir things up...this great site is about football...& I will try to keep it that way....

i don't doubt for a minute that m roberts is one of if not the best defensive player in the state, but as for state records in tackles, i don't think they are kept. there are too many subjective tackles. coaches make the totals and can create several more than there actually were.

I did'nt get to see it..but heard they looked pretty good. I know it takes a long time to get as efficient as Carroll is at it..my son is one of the 8th grade centers and they run the same offense. By the time the kids get to the 10th grade they are very familiar with the philosophy, with thousands of reps. We all hope Coach Dodge is here at least through Riley's graduation. He's a Soph. Like Briles from Stephenville, when the big money starts calling from the Colleges, it will be hard for Coach Dodge not to do what he has dreamed of & move on.

Yeah, for the record - Roberts only got 3 sacks. I guess the qb dropping back to pass - running for his life and still getting tagged by Mandela from behind is considered a "tackle behind the line of scrimmage" - lol - whatever - he had 8 tackles and probably only 2 of them were on the Lufkin side of the LOS.

Here we are after Week 1 of the season and already talking about a game that...if it happens...wil not happen until Week 15. I mean come on!

However, I must say I was impressed by the performance of the entire Lufkin team the other night. But I'm not surprised. This year's Junior class is loaded with athletes. I mean loaded! My son is a sophomore and has played baseball and basketball with these kids since they were 4 and 5 years old. On that note let me say this...

I had more fun at the ball game Friday than at any other Lufkin game I've been to since I have been attending Lufkin games regularly the last 8 or so years. The reason is I know these Juniors. I've watched them grow up and it was a blast to watch them play and actually know who they were..

Go Pack!!!

Sorry, I didn't mean to slam the kid to hard. I just thought his signature was bragging a bit much when there wasn't all that much to brag about.

I was also reacting to the previous poster who, from what he posted, seemed to think that Lufkin was all-world. No doubt they are very good. They always are. However, I'd suggest he was way over the top especially after just one game.

I hope we meet again this year because if we do that will mean both teams had a good season.

M Roberts is very special but know way will a lb beat a all world defensive lineman Mckinner Dixon's record that he just set last year. He will not break Mckinner's record for tackles behind the line of scrimmage either. Well on second thought this defense is practically blitzing linebackers on every play so scratch that. ;) I am just glad this defense is finally doing the scheme they should have been doing for 7 years.

After I posted I thought your comment might be a little "tongue-in-cheek" and didnt read like your normal posts. But as with the Longview fans its hard to keep all the variations of dragon and SLC screen names seperate. Stirring things up can be really easy and sometimes fun. I see why Lonny did it for his enjoyment last year. The board seems to be in midseason form. I hope we dont peak too early.

I was responding to drgnbkr's post about the championships in golf, tennis, and swimming. I didnt catch the sarcasm in his "voice". And yes, golf, tennis, and swimming are "white bread" activities that a LOT of kids are excluded from. And so this whole thread has been a result of a little arrogance and a little misunderstanding.

That's ridiculous that you would say that. Tiger Woods is the only black on the PGA Tour. And besides the Williams sisters you dont see a lot of black faces on the ATP or WTA tours. And excluded might might mean financially. And yes, I think that people of color may "choose" not to play those sports because , QUITE FRANKLY, they will never be exposed to them. And golf is not a sport...its a skill.

Exactly, God forbid a 98 percent white team excel in texas football??It is actually pretty normal if you look at history. If you look at the last div2 finalist in 5a they were at leat 90 percent white. So what?? If they were black nothing would be said. A team is a team no matter what their skin color is. My panthers are purple and i do not care what skin color they are.

Umm-im kinda of lost. I wasnt referring to SLC's fans or football team. But there is a reason that schools like TWHS, SLC, etc. excel at golf and tennis and it has to do more with money than race.

The common thread here is - both fans support their team regardless of anything.

Don't know if anyone caught the Sports Illustrated article in which SI named Cal Long Beach Poly the best HS sports program in the US. Interestingly, the sports do seem to break off by ethnicity. The volleyball team was mostly Samoan; the badmitten team (you know - the racket and little birdie) were mostly Asian; swimming - mostly white; cross country - mostly hispanic. Major sports were even mixture - but mostly African American in football.

This community has a wide mixture of incomes, ethnicity, religion, etc. The common thread - sports excellence - as it should be.

It matters not but just a FYI both div1a college football and HighSchool are almost exactly 50/50 white/black. The NFL has more african americans. I think around 58 to 62 percent??
