First off, heck of a defensive game. Big hits all around the field. Congrats to Cove on winning a great contest.

Cove surprised me with their discipline on the defensive side of the ball. They played the gaps very well and took away the outside runs also. Some receivers were open, but I'd leave them open too if the opposing QB can't get the ball there. The Cove D looked a bit undersized, but tackled extremely well. Trey Henderson was in on a lot of solo tackles that could have been back breakers had he not got the job done.

Cove offense, while also undersized compared to the Judson defense, played good enough to win. Donald Buckram never went down with the first hit and seemed like we needed 3 or 4 to get him down. QB needs to work on his accuracy on the long ball, but his scrambling ability is top notch. I think Judson was in the backfield all night and I doubt we got more than 1 or 2 sacks if any at all. That brings me to the line. This was the only real weakness I saw in the Bulldawgs. Running plays with an average RB would have been blown up as the D line was constantly getting by the blocker. Buckram made them pay for their aggresiveness with his speed and tackle breaking abilities.

Judson defense looked just the same as the scrimmage against Marshall. They are very athletic and aggresive, but that can bite them. I am not sure if they would have stayed more in their gaps they would have stopped Buckram or the other running backs. It seemed like they would shoot through the line and the running back would cut right through the same hole. DB's looked okay, they let a couple of pass plays happen in the second half, but you can't expect them to stop everything. I liked Tony Harp's willingness to throw his body at any ball carrier and be in on every tackle.

Judson offense looked great...the first 4 plays. I assume the constant rain before and during the first half made them go away from the passing attack I have heard about but haven't seen yet. I think the lack of offensive production had more to do with great defense than bad offense. It seemed like McDaniels could never turn that corner because Cove had him contained so well. He and Jose Mendoza occasionally broke a nice run, but for the most part they were stuffed with great tackling and disciplined defense. I hear Judson is looking for a minor league baseball player that never completed his high school eligibility to play QB. Just kidding. The rain I think had a lot to do with the lack of a passing attack for QB's not used to throwing even when the ball is dry.

Kicking is horrendous for Judson - with the exception of kickoffs.

Coaching decisions played a key roll in this game. Rackley gambled 3 times on 4th and goal and won all 3 times, but in my opinion blew to big decisions. The 43 yard field goal try when you have had one extra point squeak in and another miss is puzzling. Surely playing field position would have been a better option. The other thing that I can't get rid of is the last Judson possesion. With ~1:30 left and on your own 10 yard line with a 6 point lead, I thought hiking the ball to the punter (who is standing on the goal line) and having him run in the endzone and finally take a safety would have been the obvious call. You would still be up by 4, and now you get the free kick at the 20 with around a minute left, right? Seems like a no brainer to call that as opposed to making your already shaky punter kick from the goal line and risk a nice return or great field position and set up what eventually happened, maybe someone can see something I am missing.

BTW, sorry for the long post, just thought I'd give my shot at the game for those that couldn't be there.

Forgot two areas I had thoughts on.

Refs let them play for the most part. I can't remember seeing a flag against Cove, but that might or might not be home field advantage. The first unsportsmen like conduct could have gone both ways. The play was out of bounds and Judson reacted poorly. The personal foul on the late hit was correct. I wasn't in position to see either of the 2 untimely holdings called by the same ref late in the game, but just the fact alone makes it stand out as odd. I could have sworn Cove was offsides several times, but I guess it was the interior linemen (except the center) reacting slow which made the ends look like they were false starting. I also noticed the QB moves before the snap, not sure if this is a penalty or not? He takes one step back right before the snap when under center, and was moving to the side before the sanp in shotgun formations that he rolled out in. That is probably okay as long as a receiver isn't in motion at the same time. Again, not too sure.

The Bulldawg Stadium experience was nice. Typical small town rallying around their team and doing things I wish we did. I always thought kicking field goals for cars was something done during halftime at a bowl game, but they did it. Also had the bleacher creatures, or something similar, can't remember the name. They had that in Georgetown and I always thought it was a neat experience for a young kid to run on the same field the big guys play on. I am guessing, but I think Cove outnumbered Judson by a 4:1 margin. That is the worst I have ever seen. I am pretty sure it had more to do with location of the game and gas prices than anything else. I finally felt what opposing fans feel at Judson when there is similar proportions. Many Cove fans sitting on visitors side to have more room. One caveat I have regarding that is that if you are going to sit on the opposing side in the middle of their fans please be polite enough to not make a scene cheering when your team does well.

Okay, done now....maybe

This was exactly the kind of game you like to have between two supposedly good teams early in the season. It was a good overall learning experience for both teams---win or lose. Both teams got some really good data they'll be able to use as the season progresses and the games begin to count. Truly enjoyable visit and a fun match-up between two heavily military communities (Judson with FSH and RAFB, Cove with Fort Hood) that also have the small-town flava and an exurban/suburban flava all mixed together.

jrdaniel,

I leaned over to my buddy next to me and said the same thing about taking a safety. I would like to think that if it was a district game Rackley would have done it differently. He was obviously thinking that the D had played well most of the night and would hold up, but we know what happened.

I remember Jimmy Johnson saying if we win 2 out of 3 phases of the game (defense, offense, special teams) we will win the game. Well Judson has a lot of room for improvement. The defense was very good. The offense was very avg. and special teams was not good at all. If they dont change some things this week the Pville game next week will be real tough and week 5 vs. SV probably wont end well.

Great job JR - this was certainly the game of the week - thanks for the report. This could be a special year for CC.

Great analysis of the game. I will say the difference in this game was the special team play. Both offenses and defenses played very equally.

Here are some stats form the game:

Jud CC
1st Downs 11 12
Rushind Yds 203 145
Passing Yds 13 77
Passes 2-8-1 10-20-1
Punt Avg 4-35.5 3-36.6
Penalties 4-35 1-10
Fumbles-Lost 0-0 2-1

Mu buddy said the same thing about Rackley's confidence in the defense, but it would have still been the same situation with just more yardage and less time on the clock for Cove. I thought they would hold them as well, but why not help them out as much as possible?

The 2 scenarios:
Cove with 30-50 yards to go and ~01:30 left, down by 6
Cove with 60-70 yards to go and ~00:45 left, down by 4

The only thing that I can possibly think of is Rackley wanting more pressure on his defense to teach them for the upcoming season. Pretty crazy thinking, but who knows?
