all year i was sick and tired of hearing how good lufkin was. every week outlaw had another smart ace comment about how bad his opponent was and how their jv team could beat them. or even how their jv team could make the playoffs in their current district. this is absolutely ridiclious. he needs to quit being a comedian in the paper and needs to be focused about football.

Outlaw's track record speaks for itself. A few state championships, taken Lufkin into a program any would desire to be and countless deep playoff runs.
Did he ever make a statement like that concerning RR? I highly doubt it. Outlaw speaks the truth whether we like it or not. What he said about those teams probably had a lot of truth behind it. I have no doubt that Lufkin will be back with a vengence next year.

Okay, we all know that was really harsh and unnecessary, but it might have a little truth to it. Coach Outlaw is a great coach and Lufkin is a great program, but he often made comments that belittled their lesser opponents. I have no doubt he's a good person and worked the Panthers week in and week out, but I honestly think he spent too much time looking ahead and it came back and bit him.

I believe the Panthers were as good as the papers say. I only missed two of their games but watched them both on the tube. It is playoff time. Well Disciplined teams will make it and ultimately, SLC will have another state title.

Hey, fire away - we knew it was coming. Outlaw never once spoke how good Lufkin was. I did hear several times him say "we played well" or "we stunk it up in the first half" things like that. And, I don't recall seeing Lufkin people saying how good we were. Yes, the Klein game brought out some comments just because of the magnitude of it - but I didn't see much else.
The comments on a team being bad - he speaks the truth, he's not going to sugar-coat a 55 point win against Magnolia as something we can all get giddy about. The JV comments stem from that. Frankly, I think he's still ticked they destroyed the East Texas district. Coach O doesn't particularly like beating up on Houston teams year after year after year - and he'd prefer to stay home and play teams and coaches he can speak to and relate to. Maybe he should keep a few of the comments to himself, but I can assure you they're not malicious.

I doubt the Panthers could have beaten Klein or Magnolia last Saturday. You have to at least show up, if you expect to win. Sry, I'm still trying to get over it.

You're right. He doesn't need to sugarcoat any of his big wins, but at times during the regular season he was reported downing teams before they even played. I know we had a thread linked to an article before one of the last few games on the reg season with Outlaw saying something like "My team will probably get more experience and a bigger test in practice than on Friday". MAYBE he should have been more focused on getting the team ready for RR.

Get your head out of your butt. It was not even playoff time when he said that and we had no idea we would be playing RR. What he said had no bearing on the playoffs and getting prepared for the playoffs.

I don't think this team lacks for confidence," Outlaw said. "This group of seniors has lost a total of two games since they were in eighth grade, and both of those were to those Dragons from Southlake. These guys are accustomed to winning." --maybe got too accustomed to winning?? those guys read the paper and got too big of a head and thought the state title was going to be given to them.

Listen, I'm not trying to be a jerk. I'm being serious. I know it wasn't playoff time, but I'm talking about his mindset. NO ONE expected Lufkin to lose, and getting into the habit of blowing out teams week after week can make you look ahead. I just believe Lufkin was focusing on the semis a little too early.

The talent level on this Lufkin team is what coaches drool over. Outlaw has had this type of talent for several years and has left it short but never this short. Outlaw was clearly out coached.

Maybe you're right GRP. The comment honestly didn't bother me and I have no interest in being associated with someone who is overly-cocky. I can't stand it - it makes me ill - and he's not that way. I honestly feel he used those comments to temper's people expectations - the average Joe fan thinking we'd be everyone 55-0. But, I do agree I'd tell him to bite his tongue a time or two next year if I were his PR person.

No on the trophy being given to them - maybe on the over-confident. Look, RR shocked the world - huge upset - a 4th place team beating the no. 1 or 2 team in state. What more can you say?

Coaches devise game plans, work on details, try to motivate, etc.,. But, at the end of the day, those young men from Lufkin had to get out there and make the plays. They did not. I would be hard pressed to imagine that any Lufkin coach took RR lightly. Far from it. I'm sure they kept pounding into the players heads to get ready, be prepared, and so on. The players were looking ahead and it bit them in the ***.
I saw the exact same thing with Consol the week before. I watched our Coach on TV the night before the game saying that he was worried about RR, they reminded him of us last year. I can guarantee you that our coaches did their best to get our guys ready.
But, our guys and I'm sure Lufkins as well, had people from all over town talking about a round two matchup with Lufkin. It was on everyone's lips around here. (Lots of Lufkin folks here at Aggieland). heck, even on our own TV coaches show, the local radio host guy was the same way. All he wanted to talk about was Lufkin!
I'm sure all the Lufkin kids heard about was SLC beating ET and the big matchup against SLC yet again. They looked ahead and now they're out. Blaming the coaches is just plain wrong. If the coach calls a dumb play, then bust his cajones. If you're a 16-18 year old young man going into a playoff game, how the hell do you not "get up for the game"???
My experience with young people is that there are times where you can tell them some stuff till you're blue in the face and they won't hear you!
Is Outlaw a bit cocky? I dunno. I've never met him or heard him talk. But, if I had his run of success, I'd probably be a bit cocky as well. My grandma used to tell me "it ain't braggin' if you can back it up".
Lufkin haters are welcome to take their shots. It'll help us figure out quickly who the haters are around here.

This is a ridiculous comment. I have not followed however, the Lufkin program as close as others. I do know that they are always a powerhouse and it has been that way ever since Outlaw got there. Their track record speaks for itself. And talking to him after the game briefly after the loss, he was very respectful to me even though I am just a high school journalist. He admitted honestly that he got "outcoached" and "outplayed". That it. Plain and simple. On this day, that was simply the case.

Outlaw was clearly outcoached. He has to shoulder a lot of the blame. I must admit, while I am one of the ones who picked Lufkin to go all the way, a part of me was pleased that Outlaw had it handed to him. His earlier comments regarding his District Opponents in 15-5a , while honest, I thought was disrespectful. On the other hand, I also must point out that he showed a lot of class by not running up the score against us this year. They clearly could have beaten us by more than the 55-9 score that night.

You're kidding right???? I've been a Katy fan since 1992 and still have nightmares from those two opening season games a few years back. They have a great program and would still beat most, if not the rest, of the teams in the state. They had a bad game - that is all. Outlaw is a great coach. Just a few questions and comments about yours. I sincerely want to know how you can see we are not used to winning. Grant it, we may not be, but I have seen no evidence of us talking smack, leaving overrated comments towards the LP program. I have nothing but compliments for Outlaw. I do know for a face however, that our football team and coaching staff has been nothing but focused on Allen today. They are totally focused on this week and simply riding the momentum that we rightfully earned from knocking out 2 top ten teams. Our fans are allowed to talk about this win ALL week. First and foremost let me congratulate an awsome RR team. From what I heard on the radio they deserve to be where they are. Lufkin I have no doubt will be back. RR deserves to relish the win with pride. Yes they did knock out two top tier teams in the state. I would go so far as to say if they keep their level of play up, they might go all the way. Personally I will be rooting for them the rest of this year. To be the champion you have to beat the champion.
I think they got a shot.
Keep in mind, it only gets tougher. I guarantee not many teams from here on out will let you build that kind of lead on them.
Lufkin got beat plain and simple thats why they play the games.
RR go for it, take it to the house and give em all a suprise.

Have you not noticed the chivalry on this site? I don't think you understand how much you stand out compared to the majority of the users here. I think everyone understands how big of a win this was for RR, but in no way does it mean that Lufkin is undisciplined and anything short of a great team. It's easy to tell that RR is now fully taking advantage of the potential they've had all along, and it seems RR will be recognized as an amazing team far into the future. How would you like it if a bunch of fans from Allen rip on y'all in the event that you lose this week's game? If you lose, does it make RR any less of a team? Of course not.

Whether it originates in a coaches interview, or is cyber transmitted anonymously, this "smack" takes on a life of it's own, and the level of civility heads straight South. What is outspoken honesty to one fan is blatant disrespect to another, and could very well call into question the dignity with which you urge all to win and lose. It seems reckless and unnecessary to me...sort of like being brutally honest when asked "Honey, do you think I'm putting on weight." You should always be aware there will be a price to pay, and NO MERCY BABY, particularly in the case of the example.:p

He's trying to get a high from you guys. Ignore his comments, let the thread die, and let KT take care of him.
all year i was sick and tired of hearing how good lufkin was. every week outlaw had another smart ace comment about how bad his opponent was and how their jv team could beat them. or even how their jv team could make the playoffs in their current district. this is absolutely ridiclious. he needs to quit being a comedian in the paper and needs to be focused about football.
Dude, when you beat Lufkin, then run your trap! Lufkin was put in this District that was owned by TW for years.
I'll say it! In the last 3 years, Lufkin's JV would've probably made the play offs as the 3rd or 4th place team at least twice. Look at the scores the last three years.
R.R. congratulations & good luck the rest of the play offs.
We've (Lufkin) had some great games against a # of outstanding teams in the play offs the past several years. That was the worst whipping I've seen put on our team.

Outlaw can come down here and coach at Katy! He's one of the better high school coaches in Texas. This Lufkin loss reminds me of the 1967 Superbowl when the heavily favored Baltimore Colts lost to the upstart New York Jets. I think at one time the Colts were favored by 24 points. Well the Colts lost but it didn't mean they were overrated or lacked discipline. The Jets just played better that day. RR played better than Lufkin and congrats to them. I also think the Lufkin fans have been more than gracious. I don't know why some people want to poke a stick in the LP poster's eyes.

Do you not know how to read?....Im not a RR fan!!!

I never cease to be amazed at the things I see here. If Coach Outlaw actually said this (in a place he could be quoted) about his next opponent; nondistrict, district or playoffs, he should be ashamed of himself. Maybe the lack of discipline in Lufkin I am hearing about on this string starts at the top? That's not a coach talking.

John Outlaw is involved in every phase of the game on and off the practice field every day. Like most successful head coaches, he is only as good as the assistants he has surrounding him.
Frankly, 14-5A did stink this year, all 4 teams are gone from that district in the 2nd round.
The lack of playing tough competiton, as Lufkin had with their old East Texas district finally made a difference this year.
A team like Round Rock, who had to play hard all year long and had to win their final game to make the playoffs are proof of a team that had been tested under fire and Lufkin who did not have a close game until last Saturday.

He won state the very first year he coached - his assistants were probably his wife and some math teacher. Do you have a point? I mean, are we supposed to stop beating The Woodz every year because you think we're over-rated? Get back to me next October - I say our unblemished district record is not in jeopardy.

I know many thought I would go off on a few on this thread but I have tried to ignore it because it is not worth it. Many speak about stuff they have no clue about. Outlaw is one of the best coaches around (multiple state champion winner) and has been the winningest coach in the team's history where ever he has gone. He brought LP their first state championship and has a unbelievable regular season and playoff record since coming to LP. I mean LP has been to at least the state semis in 4 of the last 6 years including a state championsihp so give me a break on the folding in the playoffs stuff. Lufkin simply got out played and out coached last Saturday and there is nothing more that we LP fans can say. We are all shocked and humbled here in LP land. Outlaw is still a great coach IMO. Move on.

SLC will probably win it all again this year while the Panthers sit at home licking their 2nd round wounds.
Everyone wants to be like Southlake and can't. I don't see the Dragons losing any ground the next 3 or 4 years. It amazes me how they can continue to remain at the top of the food chain year after year as they do. If the dynasty label has not been applied, it should be especially if they win it all this year.
As far as you holding on to grudges, that is your problem and I hope you didn't get any subtle stabs from this post.

You miss the point slorch, no coach worth the term would ever make that kind of statement to a newspaper or his team in advance of a game. It is close to the conduct of the Carter team in walking off the field without shaking hands. It just ain't done.

You're blaming The Woodlands, College Park, Conroe, Magnolia and Oak Ridge for Lufkin's loss on the weekend? I guess all this crap about them being outplayed and outcoached by RR that you were preaching at the top of your lungs just 2 days ago - we're supposed to ignore that now? You're a model of consistency, man. So you're saying if they were back in the East TX district, they would have had better competition there? I'm sure you heard about the Longview score right? College Park barely lost to Klein Forest. They certainly stepped up on their first playoff run with a patched up Senior class. Don't be upset that your true love, Lufkin couldn't do the same with the talent they have. And before you disrespect a District that contains the Woodlands Highlanders, you may want to check highlanderfootball.net and look back to what they've done. They're going through a rough stretch. It happens.

As I've said before - much of the reasoning behind those statements ("with all due respect to Magnolia and Conroe, we'll probably get more out of practicing during the week than we will on Friday night" - or something close to that) was to temper Lufkin fans toward 55-3 scores. I think the whole context and reasoning behind the statements is being taken out of context.
Lufkin is simply going to have to work out it's own issues with a weak district. However, Lufkin will be down next year from this year - at least early on in district - so, it will not be such a big issue. The district will be better, and Lufkin will have to work harder for scores.
Plus, as we've stated - look at it the other way - how many coaches say "we're not a very good team now" or "we stunk it up in the first half" or "Round Rock outplayed us in all phases, they deserve to move on and we don't" ??
Most coaches cherry-coat losses, trump up victories, act like all opponents are state powers, etc. Coach O doesn't.

SLC is damn good. Success begets more success. Hypothetically speaking.... if any of you lived in the greater DFW area and you had a kid in elementary or junior high and he was proving to be quite the athlete, and assuming you were upwardly mobile and could pull it off, where would you choose to live?
Me, I'd be moving to SLC. I'm not saying that happens more than a lot, but I think I'd be doing it. Even if it does, so what? It's a free country.
If I lived in katy, say my kid was scheduled to go to Mayde Creek and he wasn't a baseball player, but a football player, I'd move to get him into the Katy Tiger program.
If I lived in some small town in the general east texas area, I'd move my kid into Lufkin.
This is real world and it happens. Heck, if you're not doing everything you can to give your kid every advantage you can, you're not a great parent.
I'm totally happy living in College Station. I could live anywhere in TX, but I choose to remain there as I like what the program is doing for my son and vice versus. And, we're licking round one wounds right now.

FavPack the problem is the coach. You just don't say that sort of thing, ever, where you can be quoted. Over a beer or whiskey at the deer camp, okay, who's to complain. But you don't do that in public, because you end up with kids that act like jacks when you act like one yourself.

You're right in one respect. It's not "Coach O" attempting to revise his own ground rules, and my hat is off to him for that consistency. He seems perfectly willing to live with the fallout from his "brutally honest" comments, which offended other teams in his district. Very well. So why does a hard core cheering section persist in attempting to rationalize or defend his actions? Does this not this deny him the satisfaction of walking the walk, as he has talked the talk? If you choose to subscribe to the brutal honesty approach, be advised it is a reciprocal arrangement. You will need to be prepared to suffer it in defeat as well as practice it in victory. It cuts both ways.
Outlaw is down with it, as is Favpack, one of the most astute and classy posters on this board. The balance of those in denial should get with the program endorsed by their coach. He wouldn't have it any other way.

It's amazing that we have threads ripping on Coaches Outlaw and Lineweaver...when either of whom would be an upgrade for virtually any school in Texas....

I don't think this thread is questioning Outlaw's ability. Whoever started this thread was ripping him for comments he made earlier this season. Guess it's a 'payback' thread. Lineweaver is clearly being 2nd guessed. Had his decision worked out for ET, the nature of the discussions on this board would be totally different. They are clearly good coaches, but they are also working with the best athletes. It's the coaches who overachieve with limited resources that I find impressive.

I fail to see how pointing out his consistency in following his own principles is "ripping him." Quiet the contrary. I admire those who step up and take responsibility for their own actions. Don't you? What I questioned was the explanations offered by apologists, which I think he would view as unnecessary. Just an opioion, and an appreciation for the man's intellectual integrity.

It happens.
Tell me which district game Lufkin was stretched( forced to step it up) in.
none of them, not even TWHS. It wasn't even close. The only reason it was even close at half was because of the monsoon.
RR did what they did exactly because of what I said earlier in the other posts. What i said about Lufkin's district doesn't change what happened Saturday. It only supports the mental state Lufkin was in.
BTW, I'm pretty much a casual observer until my kids get in high school. We have family in Lufkin, so I began following them when we moved here 3 years ago. they are a fun program to watch. I have personal ties to Windthorst(1A) #1, and WF Rider(4A) upset Stephenville last week. I really enjoy just good high school football, in addition to that, I even took in one CP game this year, but I don't want to dispute your assumptions about me.

Were they "forced to step it up" against Klein in the 2nd half? Or is there really no way that question can be answered?

Tell me who would have challenged them in East TX.
Tell me why Carroll routinely beat up on their opponents by similar margins. (There's certainly enough whining about how they run up the score on this board.) And it doesn't seem to hurt them.
Should we pick the most difficult district every year and put Lufkin in it so they will be ready for the playoffs?
District didn't hurt Lufkin against Klein, did it? Let's be honest. Outlaw had no answer to Round Rock's game plan and execution. Deal with it.

The day that Coach Dodge says that an opponent isn't any better than playing his JV is the day I go kick his A** personally. The good news is that I will never have to do that. That's because he has class. Maybe Lufkin's coach could get some of that.
That comment does not even deserve a response. What a dumb a--.

You know, I think this weak district schedule stuff does not hold water at all when you look at the facts. In 04 and 05 it did not hurt Lufkin a bit but now all of the sudden it is the problem? LP went to the state semis and went 14-1 and only SLC beat them in 04 and 05 while in a new district. But all of the sudden it hurt them this year? The last time LP was in the east texas district they lost in the 1st round in 03 after being #1 for most of the year. It happens just like it did this year besides it being in the 2nd round. And let's look at the old east texas district shall we? Longview has not lost one single game in the district in 3 years (just like Lufkin)with Lee and JT and Mesquite schools so why would we make such a big difference in the last few years? Does not make sense? Lufkin played Longview this year and in 04 the last time I checked and played Lee in 04 and they won all by double digits or more. Marshall and Nac are the other 2 from the old district and they are in 4a right now. Lp destroys Nac every year and Longview usually dominates Marshall every year. There are many other teams that play in weaker districts and it does not hurt them either. Let's not act like Katy, NS, and SLC etc play in some power district on a year to year basis?

Packattack posted this on the Lp site and I think it should be repeated in this thread on how much Outlaw has done for the LP program since he has been here. These stats tell the whole story and then some. We are very thankful to have him here in LP land. So what if he tells the truth when asked a question?
Over the last few days some have had questions about the Round Rock loss. Before you say anymore I want to show you a picture of Lufkin football in the 12 years before John Outlaw arrived and his record at Lufkin in his 12 years to date.
Lufkin's record under three coaches ( Ed Cauley, Pat Culpepper and Jim Slaughter) from 1983 - 1994 was 67-53-9 with 3 playoff appearences and a playoff record of 2-3.
In the 12 years under John Outlaw (1995-2006), the Panthers are 120-32-1 with 10 playoff appearences and a playoff record of 26-9.
That includes a 2001 State Championship in 2001 and three 5A State Semi-finals in 2002, 2004 and 2005.
In comparison Lufkin's winning percentage before Outlaw was 56%, averaging 5.6 wins per year. During the Outlaw years, Lufkin's winning percentage is 79%, averaging 10 wins per year.
In his past 6 seasons John is 75-9 overall, a winning percentage of 89%. His playoff record over that period is 19-5, winning percentage of 79%.
His record speaks for itself, I am glad he is here is Lufkin . I have had a blast watching Panther football the last twelve years, especially since 1998. What a ride it has been so far and I don't see it changing for next year. Thanks to John Outlaw and his great assistant coaches for putting Lufkin football on the Texas and National High School Football map.

Give me a break? Even your coach says he has the ultimate respect for coach Outlaw. So the guy is blunt so what? He tells it like it is give me a break with this pc it might hurt somebody's feeeeelings crap. He tells the truth when it is the opposite also. I know I'm glad he is here. I also trust he will fix things that may need fixing in not just football, but in Lufkin athletics as a whole. He is a good man, great coach, and good AD. Lufkin football will be back and probably win 15-5A again next year. As sure as the sun rises in the East.

The reason they lost is that they finally played good corners that wouldn't let their recievers just run by everyone. Take the fade away from them and make them drive it and you'll win. The problem is that they are so talented that nobody could do that until they played two D1 corners.

I didnt trash anyone, I was agreeing with someone elses opinion. If I like Lufkin or not doesnt matter much, and as a matter of fact I have not said a word on here about their loss. The topic of this thread was whether Outlaw should have said what he did, and how it has came back to bite him in the butt.

Wrong! The receivers were wide open all day long. The QB couldn't get the ball to them.
