Still emerging from a 24 hour funk that started around 4:15pm yesterday afternoon. Thanks to my new buddies on 5ATF for keeping me in the game here.

So here's how I see next week's games. Obviously, having picked only 3 of 8 correctly last week, you shouldn't take my opinions very seriously. However, I still have them. So here we go:

Cinco Ranch (11-1) vs. Pearland (10-2), 1 p.m. Saturday, Reliant Stadium
This should be the GOTW in Region III. Cinco has played very consistently all year and only has one loss, a very respectable one, to arch-rival Katy. Cinco has been impressive in the playoffs. On the other hand, Pearland might be the comeback story of Region III, many folks (me included) wrote them off after the Oilers dropped consecutive district games to Clear Lake and Brazoswood. Since then, however, the Oilers have been world beaters, and they are coming off an exorcism of their North Shore demons. That win over NS is more impressive than any win Cinco can muster this year. Cinco brings a balanced attack, Pearland brings a physical running game. Aside from their game against Katy, this will be Cinco's toughest test of the year. I think they will pass it. I'm going with the Cougars in a close one. Let's say 24-21.

Cy Falls (9-3) vs. West Brook (9-3), 1 p.m. Saturday, Galena Park
The Bruins and the Eagles are the two toughest teams to figure in the region, having looked dominant at times and then laying eggs against teams like Channelview and Jersey Village. These teams might be putting the best assembly of athleticism in Region III on the field, but handicapping who will really come to play might require a degree in psychology. Not having one, I will say that Cy Falls has the more impressive wins (over Cy Fair and Stratford), and while both teams lost to Westfield, Falls played them a much more competitive game. So the obvious comparisons yield an advantage to the Eagles. Once again, Cy Falls may face a QB who is the best athlete on the field (Chaisson), and the Bruins also have two outstanding runningbacks. Still, the Eagles will do better defensively against the Bruins, who prefer to make their yards on the ground. I'll take CFMom's word for it that the team won't be looking forward to Katy, and pick the Eagles to win, let's say 31-20.

Cy Fair (11-1) vs. Hightower (9-3), TBA, Saturday, Berry Center
I'm tempted to just state the obvious, which is that Hightower, while having a nice season, just isn't ready to play in Cy Fair's league. Certainly nobody on their schedule this year compares, and the Canes have losses to three teams that are clearly inferior to Cy Fair. Hightower's offense only averages about 280 yards per game, so it's not going to be capable of keeping the ball away from Sam McGuffie, who barring injury is going to put up another massive game. Cy Fair 42, Hightower 7.

Katy (12-0) vs. Brazoswood (11-1), 5 p.m. Saturday, Reliant Stadium
Katy is "in the zone" right now, rolling towards a state championship game. BUT, the Tigers haven't played anyone near the quality of the Bucs since Cinco Ranch five games ago. So if Brazoswood can smack Katy in the mouth early and stay in the game through halftime, I give them a fighting chance. But they'll have to play to Katy's defensive strength, since the Bucs' offense is dominated by the running game (3:1). Look for a close game in the first half, possibly even a Buccaneer lead at halftime, but the Tigers' defense and Andre Dean will take control of the clock and the game. A surprisingly good game that will toughen Katy up for Cy Falls in the Regional Final. Katy 28, Brazoswood 17.

Well, that's how I see them. As always, I can count on y'all to tell me where I'm wrong. Good luck to all.

The good thing about the Katy team is that they're a great 2nd half unit. I always know that no matter how the first half goes, insurance kicks in.

I like that write up Spartan. I would give a little more credit to Hightower and Katy but I still see Cy Fair beating them up pretty bad. Katy vs BWood.....I'd say 31-10 in favor of the Tigers.....the D is just at a high this season. Great predictions!

Did Falls and BWB decide on nuetral? This favors Falls.

I am thrilled to see both 175a and 185a still having 2 teams in it. 245a also has 2 teams, but not from the same school district.

I like your picks. Hope the Fair schools play the Katy schools for the R3 championships.

I think we lost the coin toss - first thing I said after the game yesterday was that I thought Galena Park would be ideal considering it's pretty far from us too and would seem neutral - plus it's a great stadium to play in. They may have picked it because they have played there already and feel comfy in its confines or maybe their stadium just isn't big enough or something...not sure but I was happy with GP.

I couldn't agree more with the predictions.
Cinco will limit PLands running game just enough to come out with the win.

With Holland back Falls offense will be running on all cylinders and will be too much for WB to handle.

Fair is in a different league than Hightower and will pull this out easily IF and only IF they won't look past them. After witnessing the Lufkin loss in person Im not sold on any HS team to come out every single game and play. Coach P stresses one game at a time and I think the kids will handle it that way as they have all year.

Katy, well Katy is Katy and should come away with another victory. Once again they must not look past this week and come out and play.

I'd say Galena Park is just an easy trip around BW8 for Falls. Hopefully more Eagle fans can find it than were able to make their way to Reliant yesterday. This game deserves a big crowd.

I heard they'd lost the flip so I assumed they were going to have to play over in Beaumont, but apparently not.

On another note, Coach R. is doing a much better job. I do question only having 3 players on the def. line most of the game, but you gotta love the result.

With a passing attack the likes of Stratford and the physical size and speed of those 3 DL's, why not take out the 4th and put in a 5th DB? Seemed to work yesterday.

I wanted to see more pressure put on Luck. When Coach did bring up 4, Luck was hurried and off. You got away with 1 yesterday, IMO. 2 missed extra points would have been a different result. I am not as upset with Coach R. as I was last year. Don't get me wrong, but if he keeps playing not to lose instead of playing to win, could be trouble.

You got that right!! I just don't get why they can't go to the games. I run into students from the school and they are like "oh, we had a game" - that frustrates the heck out of me and I tell them so...I told my daughter to go to school and tell everyone they need to go support the Eagles!! I don't even have a kid playing and I'm there at every game and about as supportive as you can possibly get...but I'm only one person...we need many many people to be there!

I think part of the problem is the constant movement and shuffling of the kids in CFISD - there is not a lot of loyalty because just when they get settled, there is a possibility they will get uprooted to another school with the constant boundary changes - my suggestion - STOP BUILDING NEW HOMES!!!

How many fans showed up to your first playoff game? I think you could lay part blame on the cost of going to see a game a Reliant for a lower turnout. I mean if you had a family of four you would be looking at $52 dollars minium just to see the game.

We had more at the Taylor game - it was packed. I just think $13 for one ticket and $8 to parkand $4 for a water turned a lot of people off. Last year at Katy, while we weren't close to Katy numbers but they bring 7 generations and the family pets, we had a pretty healthy crowd. Now, the crowd doesn't play the game but it helps to have the noise and excitement going on for the guys. Spartan told me they outnumbered us 2:1 yesterday and, if that's so, then we really need to up that ante. I didn't go look at the crowds and I felt we had a pretty good showing yesterday...it's hard to tell when you are sitting with everyone.

Cinco Ranch (11-1) vs. Pearland (10-2), 1 p.m. Saturday, Reliant Stadium
I'm going a little different direction on this -- think Cinco is a quality team - but cannot stop 4 quarters of Fozzy and Co. Think Pearland's "getting over the hump" will take them into a Reg III title bout with CyFair - taking the Oilers by 10 in this one 24 - 14.

Cy Falls (9-3) vs. West Brook (9-3), 1 p.m. Saturday, Galena Park
Eagles after a shaky defensive outing against Stratford rebound to "contain" BWB ... Falls' with too much firepower and diversity on offense to be denied 30+ points ... I'll call it CyFalls 37 - BWB 21.

Cy Fair (11-1) vs. Hightower (9-3), TBA, Saturday, Berry Center
As long as McGuffie is on the field, there's not a team in R3 that can match up. CyFair's defense stresses discipline and team play, which nullifies any athletic advantage Hightower brings. I'll take Cy Fair in a breather 35 to 10, with McGuffie going for 250+ yet again.

Katy (12-0) vs. Brazoswood (11-1), 5 p.m. Saturday, Reliant Stadium
Agree with your comments on Katy - very much like CyFair with discipline and team approach defensively, but with a better passing game. Katy will "lull you to sleep" and then deliver a kniockout punch ... see them on too much of a roll right now ... calling it Katy 31, Brazoswood 14.

When it comes to this time of year, it shouldn't matter where you are playing. The fans need to show up and support the school. When you are making a run at State, you have to come out and support the players and coaches.
I went down to the front railing after the end of the game Saturday. Many of the players come over to the stands and give handshakes and hi 5's to everyone. You can see it in their eyes, how they appreciate you being there for them. They are beat up and tired and emotionally drained, but they still take the time to thank the fans. Be there for them. Thats the least we can do.
I also think the school needs to play up the games more, as well. I think they have had a total of 2 pep rallys all year. They didn't have one the week of the first playoff game. If it does nothing else, it builds team spirit and gets more kids involved who might not know how big of a deal the playoffs really are. We're getting down to the nitty gritty now. We need people in the stands! Get 'em fired up Dr. Worthy.

Couldn't have said it better myself - the school administration is definitely partly to blame...they need to fire it up and get everyone excited. The pep rally thing - I just don't get it. When I was in high school we had them EVERY week and we had them for other sports even. I don't think a community pep rally is completely out of the realm!! I would go!! These boys and their coaches have worked HARD and they deserve to see fans out there who will support their efforts.

Stratford concerned me last week and it almost played out that way. Game could have gone either way.

This week, I am very concerned about Westbrook. I do not know enough about them to get any kind of comfort level going. But, listening to some of the reports on here they have alot of talent. Only knock I have heard is that it depends on which WB team shows up. This time of year, I bet they are very focused and actually show up to play this game.

Thing is, they have the same motivation we have - our playoff losses of 2005. They don't want to go home either and, like you, I just don't know enough about them to get comfy with any predictions or such. I think both teams would like another crack at Katy though:D

78Spartan, enjoyed your picks. It's tough to pick against what you want to happen vs what your football sense is telling you. Oh well, it is just speculation anyway. Katy vs brazoswood - Katy, Cinco vs pearland - Cinco, cyfair vs fb hightower - cyfair, cyfalls vs beaumont westbrook - cyfalls. That's how I'd like to see it. My football sense says cyfalls and Cinco better step it up on D this week or it could get out of hand. I feel they will. Good luck to all!

I used to ask my son why they never had any pep-rally's when he was playing He told me that Raffield was superstitious about pep rally's. It appeared to Raffield that whenever there was a pep rally, Cy-Falls would lose. In 2005, there were only a couple of pep rally's for that reason. I would be surprised if they have another official pep-rally this year. About the closest thing to a pep-rally that we did was to be at the school before they left for the playoff game and cheer them on.

Or a nice shiny bottle of that new Bailey's Caramel:). Either one works for me. Boy, I had SUCH a headache after that game. It's really bad when you live and die with your team - especially when you are a Cy Falls fan...you guys at Katy have it so easy:D

I would like to see it too but we have a tough, tough Westbrook team this weekend. It's another Stratford type matchup on paper so we'll see what happens. That would be fun though:)
We have the same in an under-recognized and under-appreciated Brazoswood team that is scarier than anyone thinks. If CyFalls and Katy both advance, it will be because both brought the A+ games to the field on Saturday and defeated two other great teams. Good luck!

Thing is, they have the same motivation we have - our playoff losses of 2005. They don't want to go home either and, like you, I just don't know enough about them to get comfy with any predictions or such. I think both teams would like another crack at Katy though:D

BWB was knocked out by Katy last year(42-8), so they want another shot at them just like Falls. Sounds like their QB is pretty confident about a victory, according to this quote in the Beaumont paper:

"I wanted to get to this point and get past it," said quarterback Joe Chaisson, whose three touchdown passes Saturday helped the Bruins to a 37-14 victory against Fort Bend Marshall at Galena Park. "I know with the team we have this year, we'll be able to do that."

I wish it could of been caught on tape but at the end of their game Sat,
CyFallsMom was so elated, she threw her arms out and hugged all of us.

It was one of those "moments" and the happiness on her face was priceless.

It was really fun to see her that excited. :p

[Man, I have never yelled that much for anyone other than Katy before.]

You are so sweet:).

I was SO elated and RELIEVED!! I was also so happy that you all were there because y'all are just such great fans of the game. It was a barn burner though and I was exhausted when it was over.

Yea, I've been to games like that. I believe the last one was Katy vs CyFalls last year! LOL I know exactly what you mean. :o

The good thing about the Katy team is that they're a great 2nd half unit. I always know that no matter how the first half goes, insurance kicks in.
Brazoswood is also i very good second half team :)

It does work. Glad to see other fans trying to "PUMP UP THE VOLUME" for their team. Especially this deep into it. That whole MAROON thing though would be a page out of the FIGHTING TEXAS AGGIES book. MAROON OUT!! Good luck CY-Fair!

Confidence and swagger! I like this QB. If we can take care of our business Saturday, I'll enjoy seeing either team. Good luck to both. Then again, I really want to see cyfalls again, fingers crossed.

I'd call it bulletin board material.
