College Football has Army vs Navy, OU vs Texas, Michigan vs Ohio State, Georgia vs Florida, Auburn vs Alabama, Texas vs Texas A&M, Florida State vs Miami, USC vs Notre Dame...

...how about Texas High School Football?

(Give, at least, the top 3 or 4.)

1) Permian vs Lee (It doesn't matter who wins state..as long as you win this game.)

2) La Marque vs Texas City (If you guys haven't witnessed the tradition here you've got to get to a game. It's brutal...they HATE each other. The best game, by far, occured in 1997 when both teams won the State Title. (4A Div I &II) The problem is, it's one small city/town, split by railroads. One side hates the other...like in the movies.)

3) Dallas Carter vs Kimball (I know back in the day, when I played, there was a dozen figths that broke out, during the week of this game. Deep dislikes, here!!)

4) Rockdale vs Cameron (Rivalry dates back to the 60's. It was uglier then, but still there today. It's like the Army vs Navy game...who cares to watch it...but you know there's a mystique about it. The towns shut down.)

5) South Garland vs Lakeview Centennial (In the 90's, players from these teams would purposely get into fights with the other teams players, anywhere in the city....anytime of the year. It was all settled on game day.)

...please give me your picks...I know I've forgotten or overlooked lots of rivalries. It's hard to rank them, so just try giving some good ones!!

1. Elsik-Hastings....literally brothers vs. brothers...schools are on the same block, seperated by cafeteria/annex.

2.Forest Brook-Smiley....teams have fell off since then....but rivalry goes back.

3.Yates-madison....another rivalry in which the teams have fallen off recently

4. Esienhower-Aldine.

5. Kinkaid-St. Johns.....private schools that can pack Rice stadium

Clear Lake vs Clear Creek (Pretty heated.)

Tyler Lee vs Tyler John Tyler (Closes Tyler down for the weekend.)

Midland Lee vs Midland High (Will actually be a pretty good game this year...well, we'll see!! But there are no close friends here!)

Aldine Eisenhower vs Aldine Nimitz (Not much of a contest, but definite dislikes.)

Oh...how could I forget?...

KATY VS KATY TAYLOR (Uh, there may be blood left on the field when these kids get through going at it. And Taylor has upset "Big Brother" before!)

Converse Judson vs San Antonio MacArthur (Gets pretty rough, but CJ usually wins!! As we all know!)

Port Neches Groves vs. Nederland
La Marque/Texas City/Galveston Ball vs. each other (Battle of the Causeway)...can probably throw Bay City in with that group also.
Abilene vs. Abilene Cooper
Eisenhower vs. Aldine
Midland Lee vs. Odessa Permian
Celina vs. Pilot Point
Plano vs. Plano East
Longview vs. Marshall

Just a few off the top of my head...

Yeah, like tomorrow, Galveston Ball vs La Marque is always good, but bottom line...

La Marque and Texas City has no, and I mean NO, respect for each other as communities. We're talking about 40, 50 and 60 year old men/women that spit hatred toward each other. I spend alot of my time in Texas City... (Spouse's Family) and they speak, endlessly about this rivalry. Fights, police baracades, police raids on joining communities, that were supposedly tipped off by the other....it's deeply hardened. It's unreal!

I absolutely agree with your choices...oh, and Longview and Marshall, ya that's a good one.

Wouldnt Garland vs South Garland be more of a rivalry than SG vs Lakeview?

I agree with KT2000. Best rivalry in the state starts and ends with Brownwood vs. Stephenville.

It might now, but for quiet a long time, back in the 90's SG vs LC was a gigantic rivalry!!

It's funny how Garland vs SG is a rivalry, now...it just doesn't roll off my tongue very easy...because for a long time South Garland wasn't very good. And LC was making the playoffs, at least, every other year...they had some of the City of Garlands' most treasured teams, ever. 87' thru 96' was a good time for LC. And SG had only a few good teams, but they gave LC some tough games..some memorable games.

Thanx for the response!

Donna vs Weslaco-goes back to the early 1920s when Weslaco didnt have a football team..when they got one and played Donna for the first time..weslaco plowed there field and filled it up with watet to get Donna at a disadvantage..weslaco still lost..since then the rivalry continues.

i wouldnt call tyler lee vs. john tyler a huge rivalry anymore. having to play them twice really put a damper on it, besides lee's 8 or 9 game winning streak. Lee-longview is developing into a good one, but its not with the states elite yet. Being in west texas, i definatly put brownwood-stephenville and abilene vs. cooper towards the top of any list.

A remember a few years ago the district was small and everyone played each other twice....is that still happening?

No..no..no
Lufkin,Longview, and Tyler Lee went on to kick @ in different districts.
I think playing each other twice made all of the programs in that district stronger...but it was just a temp. thing.

I think they did it for 2 years...I was stationed in Florida at the time so I'm not sure. But it had to be brutal. Playing Longview and Tyler Lee twice will prepare you for the playoffs that's for sure.

Yes, it was a two year period and it was VERY tough. However, by the second year Longview and Lufkin were beat up by the time of the playoffs, but Lee did manage to make it to the Quarterfinals in the second year of the round robin distirict. Longview lost 1st round in overtime to South Garland, and Lufkin lost another heartbreaker to Garland in the first round. I would not like to see another round robin distirict EVER AGAIN, with these four teams. However, I would love to see Lufkin back with Longview and the two Tyler teams in some way.

ok, i understand your logic behind the whole South and Lakeview thing, but there has and will always be a rivalry between Garland and South... they were the only two schools in the district for a long time, so theres always gonna be something between them.

Lufkin vs. Longview (battle for east texas)
Lufkin vs. Lee (for a few years it decided who won district)
Lufkin vs. Nac (longest continous rivalry in the state...nac was in control early on and then i think in like the 40s lufkin started to dominate...i could be wrong though)
Longview vs. Marshall (often 2 powerhouses in east texas which meant close smashmouth games)
tyler lee vs JT (it was the only district game played on saturdays which meant every team watched)

these are the top 5a rivalries in east texas...there are a lot more rivalries in east texas but these are the ones im most familiar with...i know diboll and jasper have a rivalry of sorts and back in the mid to late 90s when jasper was 4a lufkin and them had somewhat of a rivalry

relraiderfan

speaking of jasper, them and newton have a pretty good rivalry down there. Both usually field very athletic teams, and if im not mistaken there is no love loss.

The 4 team district did last for 2 years in the last realignment. It definatly was far from ideal and im sure no one wants to go through that again. of course if they did it next year, it would mean that every team made the playoffs.

Lufkin vs. Nacogdoches is not a rivalry anymore. Lufkin has won 52 of the last 60. Nac's last wins were in '82 and '92. The average score the last six years is 46-6. Lufkin's starters always out after first series of 3rd qtr. Nac wins the "vandalize the other teams facilities" contest every year though.

LA PORTE vs DEER PARK

it's funny anytime DEER PARK has a good year and ready for the playoffs , here comes La Porte no matter what the record is , they have a habit to beat Deer Park then after the game they (Deer Park) sit at home with no playoffs to go to

oh yes it's a good game every year of course La Porte has the good edge against them

I was around, as an adult, to see the stuff done to each other by South and Lakeview, but, as on other subjects, you have no view of the past. Back from the day South was built in 1964, Garland and South have been at odds. At first it was Garland with all the trophys and South with all the money, and it was a true class war of the have's and have not's. Then with desegregation, it further stretched the class lines by adding race into the mix and Garland was the black school and South was the white school. Many horrible things were done from '64 through about '76, or so, and Lakeview came along and defused the whole deal, to some degree. With Souths' resurgence over the last 6 or 7 years, the rivalry has really heated up again.
