Do you agree with the response from the schools on this? Why do you think only 54 said it was a problem in their school, yet 300+ said they think it is a problem in other schools?
Working on my Thesis, and would like your opinions on this. Students, players, and parents. Please let me know if you are a student, or parent. If you are a high school coach, please let me know as well. Thanks in advance

I don't know about other districts, but the Carroll district, here in Southlake, has required every parent of a student participating in athletics to attend a 2 hour drug awareness session at the high school. Don't attend, kid does not play...they are serious about it here....

I am a student. I don't think this is a problem at Judson, IMO. I don't think it is a problem at other schools, IMO. I think there should be random testing during the whole season, and it should not be a local thing.

Can anyone tell me what IMO means?
They should also do random testing....but what sucks about it is some people get past it....

I am not a parent or student just a fan of the game. Any superintendent, parent, player who doesn't think these things are going on intheir school district or schools is simply lying to themselves. While it may not be done out in the open where others can see it. We all know ti goes on in field houses every where. And if not on school property it's done in the home or somewhere out of the sight of parents or anyoe that would try yo stop it. Not only do we need to step up our efforts in educating the kids but I do believe there should be random test doen on anyone wantign to participate in any UIL activites.

acutally drgnbkr, its for any carroll student involed in ANY extracurriclar activity, rangeing from band to atheltics to chess club and every else in between, im glad carroll is trying to crack down on this, they have it set up where your parent has to attend once for middle school years and then once when your in highschool, i think it should be a yearly thing personally, but at least their trying to make a stand against drugs and stuff

Yeah....but then people start shaving off their head....among other things...to get rid of any trace of it. And then urine samples are only good for like a few days...

Wealthy schools always have trouble with drugs....I hate it.
But if they do shave their head....how are you going to prove they were doing something wrong- you have a suspicion but no hard evidence.

they have troulbe with it because they have money to buy what ever they want, we had a lil assemlbly over this today, the way to proove it is just test them i guess im not sure, this issue cna be aruged back and forth all day and night with new questions popping up all over

Yeah, thats why it's more of a problem with wealthy schools...
But if testing is really, really, really random....they could get them off guard like just do it at random days and random times and randomly pick people.

hence the "random" part in random drug testing

Haha
At my old school they'd do it every month or so and just do a few people at once. Just one week do a monday, the other week a wednesday or something like that......but most of it is computer generated.

Thanks again guys, good points and information. Please feel free to keep them comming. Do you think this is or is not a problem. If you think it is, is it a big problem? Do you think we (texas) should test at the high school level like the NCAA does? And if you are not a parent, student, or athlete and you are just a fan of the game, please give input as well. Any ideas where the money should come from to test? Its like $100 per student for this test. Thanks again everyone..

The money, uhh...good question. Maybe fine people who's results come back positive. I can't think of a good way to pay for it.

Yea like the NFL ;) That will not work at this level, but it would be nice. Any ideas on this would really help. I have a couple, but I would like to hear from others. One last thing. Anyone agree on a team pool test? What I mean by this is test the entire team, and if the test is positive, then test everyone. I have talked to some chemist and they say a test like this can be done a lot cheaper than individual test. Now if it is positive you will have to test each athlete. Parents, would you sign off to have your children be tested in this manner?

For every test there is an equalizing anti-test that can be done to mask or confuse a drug screen. If you make it a random test that is done one a week then the kids who are using would also use the anti-test treatment to mask the results. I think a "pool Test" would be the fairest but how would you do that! If you tested a football team then you would have to test the debate team, the dance squad, the band and the chess club!
I have seen that the threat of random testing have an effect on the entire school population. When this topic came up last year and a random test was rummored to be institued, then the teachers noticed that some kids were showing signs of detox for fear of being the ones tested.
I think that all kids should be tested for all drugs in a random manner. Most workplaces now have mandatory drug testing before you can get a job. Testing the kids in High School is a real world experence that might save a child. Paying for it would be a tricky issue since the Texas Budget for Education still has not be approved! Maybe a fee such as a "Play to Play" could be used to offset the cost of the random tests.
