thats rather interesting, im glad their giving the kids a chance to play, it may be somewhat unfair, but it doesnt matter rightn ow, its helping those kids try to live a normal life and this is a step in that direction

They opened a shelter here in Austin.......at The Burger Center..which is the home to Austin Crockett and some other high schools here.
They just showed a kid that is all over rivals.com....and is from New Orleans...talking about he has worked so hard..and was upset that he can't play this year and might be losing a scholarship from all of this.
He said all he needs is a few days to practice with a team........and he'll be good to go.
I bet there were coaches rushing down there after seeing that on tv.....haha

time to recruit it appears... I mean, think about it. teams from beaumont to houston are probably seeking these guys out. but, if the kids and their families move to TX on a permanent basis (which for the sake of this football season, no one will be living in New Orleans), then this is legal and good for the displaced kids.
but, the unethical will be going nuts with this one... it is probably not going to be that many new players in TX. a handful or two.
on the flip side, how would you like to be a senior that has worked his butt off for a couple of years, finally made varsity and is now starting for his one and only season... along comes superstud from new orleans and knocks him out of his one year to start. that would be the real shame in all this.
I am completely sympathetic to the kids in the Hurricane affected areas, but there will be two sides to this if it becomes rampant.

Just remember this when you talk about recruiting. There has to means of communication and from what I am hearing, that is non-existant. So, the only recruiting that will be going on will be in reverse. Don't blame the programs. They are a product of the situation and no matter where they go or who they displace, they deserve the same chance to play that everyone else does. They are kids who didn't ask for this. They just have to figure out how to make the most of a terrible situation. I am still in shock about this whole incident, so forgive me if I sound like I'm being impartial to our own. Watching the news these last few days reminds me of going to the movies about the end of the world. Folks, this is real. These are real people suffering. They are our neighbors. They are Americans. They are within 12 hours of any of us on this board. Right now football seems so trivial. :( :(

Once cell phones get charged back up - communication will improve. These kids need to return to normalcy asap - if that means playing for an opponent - bring it on - the kids should come first regardless.
IMO these kids should be moving up to Monroe or Shreveport - stay in LA just for record-keeping. But whatever works - do it.
Ok...so how exactly does this work? What rules are in place to keep the "Studs" from La. all deciding that they want to go to...lets say...Westfield?

Those cities in northern LA don't have anywhere near the capacity places like Houston/DFW/Austin/San Antonio do to take in the extra students. Ideally, it'd be good for them to stay in their home state, but it's just not possible given the mass exodus out of the southern half of LA. They just don't have the resources necessary in the northern part of the state.

Life isn't fair.
How would you like to be that senior who has his senior year wiped out, his home destroyed, his friends scattered all over the southern United States?

I doubt that'll be an issue given how those displaced have scattered. I'd be willing to guess that playing football is close to the last thing on many of these kids' minds right now. The late evacuees are just trying to find food and shelter at this point. The ones that got out in time are wondering what to do with their lives now that the area they used to live in is severly incapacitated.

What's up KT.....true, but I dont think there are any zoning restrictions and some of the coaches COULD...not saying they are, be out recruiting, directly or non-directly. I know this is the last thing on their minds, but like someone said in another post...some guys NEEDED this season for a scholarship or something. This may be their only way to get to college and the chance to better a life that just got worse.

Great post, Bullrock. I'll bet there are a lot of these kids that are hoping just to not lose a year of school. They have to enroll somewhere to be able to move to the next grade level next year. College students in the area w/out a college to go to, etc. This thing is a lot bigger than sports! These people need donations, open doors, and PRAYERS!

Agreed totally - let's pray, help, and not worry about our minor issues here. I'd personally love to see a bunch of Texas families take in some fine LA folks into their home and let these kids lose out on a year of school.

Favpack, I agree and I bet you mean NOT lose out on a year of school and football.
I hope we would all be willing to take in families for a while but I am not sure we would.

Yeah, I hear you. It's a big blow to a lot of folks for sure. A principal at one of our schools here has all his extended family coming to live with him from New Orleans to College Station (10+). They lost everything, arriving in dirty clothes only. My wife and I decided to send the money we were going to send to the Red Cross to the committee of teachers at that school that are buying items for this specific family.
Whether you choose to help directly or go through a large legitimite organization (watch out for scammers), please help.
My uncle and his family live just north of I-12, east of Baton Rouge. We've not been able to make contact with them since the hurricane. We have no idea whether or not they are okay, but they should have been out of the line of fire when it came to the flooding. Close enough to that little lake northwest of Ponchatrain that they *might* have gotten flooded. We have no way of knowing.
