Everybody (me included) has been knocking the 4 team playoff system ever since it arrived. But as far as Austin area 4th place teams (Round Rock clinched a playoff spot on the last availible day, and San Marcos was the 4th best team in historically a weak 25-5a), they've done more then held their own and have really shaken up the brackets. I know this is only week one, but its looking like their will be more and more upsets. I am personally a fan of it now (to a certain extent). Think about what the NCAA basketball tournament would be like if only each conferences champion went, and the 2nd plaec team. Half the argument for not having a 4th place team was that they would enter the playoffs and just embarress themselves, and it wouldnt be a good experience. In most cases this will probably happen, but think about how the town of San Marcos feels today after nobody gave them a snowballs chance in hell against SV. Think about how the town of Round Rock feels after all of the AMC vs Lufkin threads (since everybody was assuming this match up). I personally became a fan of it last night because thats what high school football should be all about.

Despite the upsets last night, four teams in the playoffs per district is still a bad idea.

Four teams from six team districts looks silly...
From nine team districts...not so much...IMO...

Four teams does look silly. It's 2 too many

It begs the question though. What happens to teams who have 3 or 4 playoff caliber teams in their district? Conversely, you may have a district where the top 2 teams are mediocre at best. The playoffs are a different animal. You have too many good teams in this state. A district no.1 beating the next district's no.4 team is not necessarily a given.

It works out ok because it evens out the number of games D1 and D2 play anyways. Plus I like the possiblity of their being a Cinderella team somewhere in the Brackets

You will be better prepared for the POs with quality district play.
as it is there could be 6 "playoff caliber teams in their district"
2 teams/ one champion. 'nuff said.

Am i the only person that sees the comparison with the NCAA brackets with this? Last night the two upsets that i mentioned were the equivalent of a 15 seed beating a 2 seed (both teams barely got in the playoffs and the two teams they beat were ranked in the top 8). Round Rock barely made it in and they were supposed to get embarressed by AMC, and everybody was supposed to say "see, thats why there should only be 3 playoff teams. Cause of teams like this". I agree that 4 teams is too many for a 6 team district, but teams like San Marcos and Round ROck wouldnt have made the playoffs under our old system. They obviously wanted to prove that they were deserving of a playoff spot and did just that. I'm not saying 4 teams is right, i'm just saying after the first friday of the playoffs its looking more and more justified. Does anybody agree with that?
No I still think 4 teams is too many. My Humble wildcats did not make it out of 21-5A but two champions is really bad. Lets have one state champion or at least let the D1 and D2 champions play.

^^Oh i agree with that. I'm just talking about the difference from 3 to 4. THere does need to be one state champion, but there was already two with the 3 team system.

I do. There is no such thing as a perfect system. But what you're saying is that the system we presently have (four teams in the playoffs), gave Round Rock and San Marcos the opportunity to advance to the playoffs and they took that opportunity and shined. So nobody can say they did not belong there.

i think that giving the top 4 teams is an ok idea.
I'm not one to rant or rave about it either way,
but it does give some teams chances at something they have never experienced before and I think thats awesome.
Just a question, but are there any teams that have never been to playoffs until now with the 4 team system?

I'm fine with 4 playoff teams. 26-5A still has good teams missing out. We have ahd 3rd place teams win titles and play for titles in the past.

I'd like to be in the NFL. They should have two more roster spots so I could make a team.:D
I propose that you take the top 16 teams from each region and give them a seed ranking much like college basketball. 1-16 goes to division 1 regardless of school size, 17-32(would be reconverted to 1-16 in div.2) goes to div.2.
1v16
2v15
3v14
4v13
5v13
6v11
7v10
8v9
Use their w/l record and if a tie breaker existed some sort of tie breaker system by points for divided by points against or something.
And if you didnt want to separate div.1 from div.2 you could just have all 32 teams play in the same division...it only add one more game...

Four teams from six team districts looks silly...
From nine team districts...not so much...IMO...
Example: District 3-5a has only two teams with a winning record...
District 21-5a has 5 teams with a winning record
4 with a 7-3 record
1 with a 6-3 record
Think if it was the old rules where only 2 teams in a district went to the playoffs...21-5a would be a mess

34-27
So far I have:
San Marcos (over SV)
Round Rock (over AMC)
Amarillo Tascosa (over EP Coronado)
SA Reagan (over Seguin)
Mesquite (over Dallas Skyline)
Midland Lee (over Burleson)
as fourth place teams winning their first game. Five of these six defeated district champions. Three of the six were ranked high in many polls.
Playoffs! I'm telling ya, Lubbock High gots to be a part of this excitement in the near future!
Are there any other 4th place teams that have won this weekend?
