What a matchup. Two of the best D's in the state with Two very good offenses goin' up against them. I expect a good game just like last years game in which Judson took 28-12. It was much closer than the score implied. It seemed like it went down to the last play and we were down by point or two. What does everyone think of the matchup?

Judson wins by double digits, but the admins will say Cove because that's how they can justify leaving Cove above Judson in the rankings.

Judson by double digits. The only way that happens is if they win 10-0 and don't plan on Cove's offense being shut down. Cove has a very good defense this year. A big standout after the 0 week was Craig Wood, a junior that came out of nowhere to start and tore it up on the Killeen offense with 7 tackles and 2 BIG hits on their rb and qb.

Cove def. isnt all that great, not cutting them down they are a good team but I think judson still has the upper hand both ways here, I know cove performed well at their scrimage but, I dunno i just dont see cove winning this one, just my opion, id like to see cove win this one though

Cove returns a lot of experience on defense, so I expect them to be better there given the guys they have back. I really think the Dawgs could be very good on that side of the ball and they get a good test this week.
Brant, great game against Eisenhower btw.

Scrimmage is just that a scrimage. I hope you are not going by that. If C ove's D is not that great then I sure would like to know who in 13-5a has a better one. Certainly not AMC.

is all fairness you cant even compare the level of competition in 26-5A and 13-5A sure those kids got all district there but could they have gotten it in our district. We will see what happens friday like i said i would like judson to win but if we dont then thats fine as well its only a non district game. Besides when judson enters the playoofs undefeatd i get scared cuz they always seem to lose. But we lose a game and then we go to state. :)

FOOTBALLJUNKIE : Im not just going off of their scrimage, and in the 13-5a better def. is probally waco or cove , and AMC is right up there we have atleast 6 d1-prospect starting on or def. and yes cove is an amazing team, but all i ment by my comment about cove def. was that i think judson has the upper hand on both side of the ball, but yes cove def. is good bc of the many returners they have and because of their coaches

I like the admins and all, but they really do play it safe and cover themselves. They rarely move a team down that won and won't pick a lower ranked team to win very often. I think last week showed which team was better, but they left Judson in the #9 spot like I expected. That preview was code for saying, "we're not going to admit we're wrong until we're forced to." If Cove wins the game, I'll come back and say the admins know what they're talking about.

Lonny dont be too hard on the admins. Even though Judson was impressive last week vs. Nixon, it was still Nixon.
Nixon would probably fight it out with Lee to see who would finish last in 26-5.
We Judson fans would not be giddy about a drubbing of Lee would we?
I think Judson wins this game going away on Friday. I am not sold on Cove. Talented as they may be they were caught out of position several times last year. Which tells me they are not very disciplined. Their game last week showed alot of the same "mental mistakes" according to the newspaper article I read. If Judson keeps down the penalties and does not turn the ball over I think Judson wins by 14+.

My personal opinion of Nixon is that they're middle of the road in 26-5A and 27-5A and fighting for a playoff spot in 25-5A. They can't beat the top teams, but they can break off wins in a SA district.

So you think we should make sweeping judgements about a team based on one game? The first game of the year at that? Lonny, lonny, lonny...we just can't make a believer out of ya :) . If we really wanted to cover ourselves we'd just throw together a power ranking formula and just tell yall, "Hey, this is just what the Excel gave us."
I stated the exact reason for our pick of Cove in the article, so no need to read into it further than need be. Contrary to popular belief, there are no conspiracy theories.
I went with the Dawgs mainly because of these three basic things...all-around ability, experience and home field. I think that is perfectly legit.
If Judson wins, then the rankings will change. You are exactly right about the "we're not going to admit we're wrong until we're forced to" approach because it has to be that way when dealing with rankings (especially early on when there isn't much to go on yet).
We don't know what separates teams as close in the rankings as Cove and Judson are until they get out there and play. Until that happens it's all speculative so there is no reason to claim right or wrong because, quite frankly, the rankings must play themselves out over the course of the season like they always do.

Nice answer. :) I don't think you can make sweeping judgments after one game, but there are 3 things I believe:
1. Judson was better going into the year.
2. Judson playing real good in game 1 is a good sign of things to come.
3. Judson at a minimum maintained and probably exceeded their level of dominance over Nixon and Cove played far worse against Killeen this year. I can't say Killeen has gotten a lot better, but Nixon might be a little worse.
What else am I going to say when the power poll has Judson as a 13 point favorite? ;) Hey, I'm a natural politician when it comes to stumping! I said I would be quiet about Judson until they played and they went out a blew up a perennial 3 round deep playoff team, which means a little even in South Texas.
If Cove wins, I'll cut my losses, but if Judson wins, I'll be calling for Top 5 next week (Not #8)! :D I won't bother you too much since Pflugerville and SV are this month, too. Eventually, Judson will make you a believer! ;)

laredo nixon is a 3 round deep team? are you really throwing that tripe out there as a reason to proclaim any sort of dominance? lonny, you can't name any other region or area except maybe elpaso where they could win a single playoff game, or even make the playoffs. using whatever power rankings you just quoted, just exactly where does lnixon fall? if they arent in the bottom 1/4 the system is bogus.

Ive read the article and I See where people are getting there reason's for why cove should win and i agree with the all around ability and the home field advantage and also scence judson did win last year (not totally sure on that) but My reason for thinking cove wont win this is one, bc cove doesnt have the amazing o-line like the had last year and i think that made alot more of a diffrence than what people saw and from what it sounds like judson is a better "tuned" team as of now (didnt get to watch judson or cove play yet) just going off of what ive read so far, but this game should show what kind of team cove will be this year (kinda of a stupid statement) , id like to see cove win but i still think judson will take this one but im supporting cove, and i know they returned alot on def. and they do have a good def.,but can some one tell me like some of there outstand def. players? im not to familar with the individual players on cove def.

Judson can't proclaim dominance after beating a playoff team in the fashion that they did but SLC can claim it after beating a mediocre team that in all likelihood might -- well probably will miss out on the playoffs ? I am confused? isn't this the goose / gander or is it more like the do what i say not what i do ?

maybe the game last year they werent disciplined, but usually cove is a very sound and accurate team on what they are doing ( but i didnt see the game last year) just saying from when i play them that they are usually on mark but thats also towards the end of the season when we play them

Players to Watch on Cove Defense
DL James Porter (All-District 04)
LB Sterling Lewis (Ret. Starter)
LB Dwayne Thomas (DE last year)
DB Tim Atchison (All-District 04)
DB Joseph Leary (All-District 04 as a soph)
DB-WR Alphonso Powell (All-District 04)
DB Mario Goins (Letter last year)
Those are just the main guys. As a unit, I've heard comparisons to the 85 Bears and that the all-district QB has Tom Brady's poise and Marino's arm. OK, I'm exaggerating now.
As far as the OL goes, Cove has two of the five guys from last year back (both All-District) and I'm not sure how good the new three starters are yet. Again, Cove came into this season with more all-district returners than any other team in the state.

I don't think either can make any claims for 2005 dominance after only one game. SLC can claim 5A dominance over the last 3+ years with their 48-1 5A record. Judson can claim dominance in past years due to their success in the 90s and beyond. But it's to soon to claim anything for 2005 alone.
As for Midland not making the play-offs I wouldn't bet on it. They are pre-season top 20 and could very well have a good year. Last year SLC beat them soundly to open the season but they came back and even made it into the Texas top 10 at one point. Same could easily happen this year.

From todays local paper:
Cove notebook: Bulldawgs defense to be tested this week
By Monty Campbell
The Cove Herald
COPPERAS COVE — The Copperas Cove football team limited the Killeen Kangaroos to 137 total yards in the 24-0 season opening victory Friday at Leo Buckley Stadium.
The trio of Craig Wood, Sascha Johnson and Sterling Lewis combined for 20 tackles, three sacks and a fumble recovery.
The defense will have to be able to step up to the plate again this Friday when the powerful Converse Judson Rockets come rolling into Bulldawg Stadium. The Rockets gained 439 yards of total offense while only throwing the ball nine times, led by Alfred McDaniel's 193 yards.
"Converse Judson is one of the best coached, most athletic teams that we will play this year," head coach Jack Welch said. " They have four very good running backs and have a lot of depth just like us."
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sascha Johnson – The defensive end totaled eight tackles, recorded a sack and recovered a fumble in the 24-0 season opening victory over the Killeen Kangaroos Friday night.
Of The three players listed Wood and Johnson are DL.

That's a good question but I've seen 5'6 DBs stick to 6'3 blue chips like flys on you know what and shut them down. Size doesn't guarantee anything if that DB knows positioning techniques and has good cover skills of course. Of course, size is also pointless for a WR if they don't know how to use it.

there are some districts, and arlington used to be one of the worst, that awarded everyone that started and several non-starters from the best team(alamar) as all-district. doesn't mean much in those situations, cause you could just say they were returning starters and say the same thing.
