Texas has had so many, but my vote would be for Earl Campbell.

One of, if not the greatest running back ever. He was a hoss........

I'm sure others will argue with my choice, but he is still the greatest running a ever saw.

Eric Dickerson.. if he wouldnt of gotten so cocky and arrogant he would of broken and owned every rushing record. He was a complete "Stud" just bad attitude.

My favorite and running a close second is Earl "Tyler Rose" Campbell. Still my favorite football player of all-time.

I must also go with Earl Campbell as the best total product from Texas. He, more than any other player, changed the way defenses had to play to stop him.

However, if we're gonna list nominees, I'm gonna throw out my personal favorite. Bobby Boyd was the quarterback of the 1956 Garland Owls Championship team. He also did kickoff and punt returns and place kicked kickoffs, field goals, and extra points. He graduated in 1956 going to Oklahoma with a stellar career as QB, RB, and kickoff and punt returner. He was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in 1960 and was converted to a defensive back where he played from 1960-69, a nine year career, and is presently in a five way tie for 10th place all-time for career interceptions with 57. He has Hall-of-Fame numbers, but because he wanted to coach, he quit after only 9 years and the selection committee usually wants 10 years for consideration. The only way he can get in now is the way Rayfield Wright will, by the veterans committee. I talked to him a couple of weeks ago, and he says if he knew that 10 years would have got him in he'd have played 20. He's a kind and gentle old man now and deserves to be in the Hall.

If you ever see him come up on the veterans committe list, your emails or letters to the Hall would be appreciated.

Best player I've seen not named Vincent Young/Cedric Benson/Derrick Johnson...

Quan Cosby, Mart

Led his school to state championship. Played many positions. His senior year, he hand timed at 4.26 and benched around 350. Not bad for a guy that weighed about 185-190. He squatted over 500 pounds.

I think he's definitely one of the most talented players to ever suit up on Friday nights in the history of this state.

A player I didn't personally see play HS football, but everyone tells me he was awesome...

Eric Dickerson got to 10,000 yards in fewer games (not years) faster than any other back in the history of the NFL. Had his career not been shortened do to injury he could've put the career rushing yards completely out of reach. He was fun to watch.

However, Earl was more fun to watch because there was no shake and bake. He just flat out ran over people. Those two get my votes.

Half the names I listed wouldn't make it by todays standards, but they were great in their era...which are awesome accomplishments. I'm speaking by relativity...name the best football product(s) from Texas??

Whether or not Sammy Baugh could dominate today is irrelevant! They were great in their day, and that's what made them great products...in their day!!

You're wanting to bicker over the never-ending-age-asked question....What would happen if Eric Dickerson's 78' team do if they played the 95' Lakeview team. In my mind, it's simple...they would lose. But that's my opinion.

You want me to really shock you..........(drum rolls please).....BABE RUTH ISN'T THE GREATEST BASEBALLER OF ALL TIME. Hell, he wasn't the best of his era, so how he been considered as the greatest of all time.

The problem with fighting over these answers is "PRIDE". You obviously represent the legendary past of sports. The Golden Age!!! Well I represent the new age of sports!!

Hence, the evolution of sports!!! I pray that when I'm older (in my 50's, 60's, etc...) I will have the capacity and common sense to succomb to the evolution of the world. 40 years from now, I don't want to sit there having a conversation with some 18 year old (Im not 18...just an example), telling him I bet you don't remember this, but there was this running back...way back in 1998 name Cedric Benson, he came out of Midland Lee. He's the greatest that ever played!!

Then the 18 year old, who's 6'4 240 lbs, playing RUNNING BACK, benching 400lbs, squatting 650lbs and running a 4.15 40 yard dash, says well I've rushed for 3,500 yards and 41 touchdowns this year. ANd I'm still saying, yeah, but ole' Cedric he's still greatest.

B.S.!!!

Your time has passed, have the decency to move over, and acknowledge that.

Football has transended...strategically, physically, universally and logically.

Those athletes were the best, and sometimes first, of their era, but there's been alot more athletes equal to them, and plenty of them better than them.

It's the stubborn nature of older men that won't allow them to see anything better in todays society...like the racially-plagued era's of the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's are anything to be proud of!

You young people need to realize that the Earnie Banks, Bob Hays, Jim Brown type athletes ,were great then, and would be great now. Son, Johnny Unitas in his day would be would be the best passer if he were playing today, and Jim Brown, the best runner. Nothing magic happened in 1980! Age will give you a better perspective.

Dont know about the toe, but he never missed a game,. He was best football player I have ever seen. I was at the Cotton Bowl, sitting on about the 10, and saw him run over Chuck Howley, Mike Gechter, and Bob Lilly from about the 15, and just walk into the end zone. Its part of a highlight film somewhere. P.S I was only 3 years old :)

Sir, I really do hope age gives me a better perspective!! As for now, the athleticism, dynamics and strategy of new age sports wins out. Johny U and Jim Brown didn't face the size, speed, entangibles, dynamics, strategies and logics of todays game. Jim Brown ran over 240 pound defensive lineman and ran by 4.8 40 yard dash-running defensive backs. Today he'd have to run over 300 pound lineman, (that move as fast, if not faster...the stats don't lie) and he'd have to outrun 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 40 yard dash-running defensive backs.

Johny U's playbook was as thin as "The Greensheets"...today he would have to run completely different offenses...with playbooks the size of 2 inch binders. He'd also have to outrun those 4.4 40 yard dash-running 6-4 250 pound linebackers...which are light years faster than the slow-footed backers, back in the day.

Despite all of this...

...make no mistake about it, I'm a huge Johny U and Jim Brown fan.

As far as the race card is concerned...

As an African American I've deeply read about the history of sports...listen to my dad, born and raced in a small racially bigotted Texas town called Rockdale. The animalistic cruelty that minorities had to endure is overwhelming.

I take pride in knowing football was more prone to intergrating...even though it should have never been an issue. But baseball...I'll never forgive. As far as I'm concerned MLB "began" the day Jackie Robinson was signed. Anything before that is nothing!!! Absolutely nothing!!!

Sometimes I wish I could be zapped back there to watch high school football in the 50's and 60's, when my dad played, but he tells me, "Son, you wouldn't wanna be alive to hear the things people were calling you. Not in that time"!

Anyhow, there are so many great athletes of those era's from Texas!! I just think the new era is better!! Hell, my dad who was a two time district end tells me it's much better today!!!

:D Not to mention I played high school, not to long ago, on a pretty dominate team. (In the city of Garland...and ultimately played college ball at the U of North Texas)

I saw something on beyond the glory ...they said he played with a broken toe. When asked 'Why didnt you tell anyone"...he replied "You would have wanted me to play anyway". Thats when real men played football.

A toe is considered a liability today. Teams cannot endanger a players future or career. A broken toe and turf toe, which you hear alot about, are two totally different things. I know, I've had both of them.

And back there things like morphine was rampant in the league. Guys like Mean Joe Green admitted it. That's why half the guys had knocked out teeth...they were either high, drugged up or drunk. (Some were just plain psychotic!!)

It was rugged...you played with broken boens...and were payed a measly few thousand dollars, a year, to do it.

Mean Joe once said "No one lifted, ran or worked out...back then there wasn't programs like that. So you would drink a six pack, take some pills and bang your head in the wall a few times...and everything was clearer."

That age of football was truly rugged....but very few were true "athletes". Most of them were just farm-raised, had a little strength...and were completely nuts!!

But compared to the modern athlete, only the exceptions would stand up.

:D And MAN...Jim Brown was an exception! That S.O.B was out of this world!

(Guys like him, Joe Green, Dick Butkus, Lambert, Deacon Jones, Gene Upshaw...and plenty others were certifiably crazy. Unlike earlier discussions about high school football...these guys could possibly make it today. But I would wonder if they could evolve to the workout regimates and dynamics today. The speed, power and size si so different than 40 and 50 years ago, they'd have to adapt. Most of them were tall, but not very athletic. And they'd admit it. "Just give me the beer, girls, mink furs and rugged football...but keep the ******* excersising." - Dick Butkus)
