As pleasing as it may be to think that again, a SLC QB will be the player of the year, is that likely... I don't see it, but who has a shot at be the player of the the year?

Sam McGuffie - I assume you are talking about statewide? That would be my choice. My definition of a player of the year is someone who has really helped their team and he has. I'm sure the SLC QB is a great athlete but in a team full of great athletes. Without Sam, Cy Fair would be good but not AS good. He is in a league of his own IMO.

There are several athletes who demand attention from opposing coaches, but only a few who have proven next to impossible to shut down.
Sam McGuffie
I'm not aware of another player who has more of an impact than Sam seems to have when he is on the field. I think he is a likely candidate for sure.

being as how i'm firmly ensconced behind the gated community that is sl, and thus completely cut off from the big, bad world, who is sam mcguffie? i will be surprised, as i was in 03, if an slc qb takes the award again. i do believe that there is no one who would look at any of the last 3 players and their hs stats/performances/outcomes, and argue that any weren't at least worthy of at least consideration.

I don't have any ideas about who it might be. There are many that would qualify. I don't think it will be someone from SLC this year though.

I would say Southlake Carroll QB's Riley Dodge... He's always had a great game every single game.

I'm sure a Cy Fair fan or player could give you a lot more insight than I can but, put your Chablis and Cuban down a second and I'll fill you in on what I know.
Sam is a Junior RB at Cy Fair - he was good last year as well but this year, he has just exploded and against some very good defenses too. He had 220 yards against Cy Falls and that is very impressive. He has had 200+ games all year and last week had a 376 game and went over the 2,000 yard rushing mark. He has a "habit" of hurdling defensive linemen - guys who are over 6 feet tall usually and they are pretty much standing up and he goes untouched. I have seem him do it in 3 games this year and it's still hard to believe. He is SO fast too - he has great balance and the defenses just can't get their hands on him. We had a couple of guys just holding on to his jersey on one play - hoping that he would go down. They know he is getting the ball but he still gets by them - he can stop on a dime and reverse his direction and, as a fan, it makes my head spin!! I used to say Cy Fair was one-dimensional - well, if they are, WHAT a dimension to have:D

I vote against Riley Dodge because I am tired of hearing nothing but SLC this SLC that like it's the best dynasty in high school football. Nothing shall surpass PLANO of the 70s - 90s!

pretty shrewd how you vote against someone for something over which they have no control. and btw, why cut out 2 state titles for the cats by not including the 60's? it is one more than the 90's btw.

CyFallsMom hit the nail on the head. You have to see Sam to believe how good he is. The defender Sam leapt last week is 6' tall. He was in a defensive stance and Sam basically hurdled him. (As I stated in another post, I feel bad for our #15 being on that highlight reel for all the years to come! :) )
My vote goes for Sam as well. I know there are other superior athletes out there (current and former), but Sam is different. As long as he stays healthy, we will all be talking about our kids playing with, or against, him "back in the day."

Will Cole from Cedar Hill. Leading the dfw area in rushing and scoring (by far) from the quarterback position. There's alot of talent around him, but Cole has been one of the most dominating players in 5-A I can remember in recent memory.

yeah i would have to agree from what ive seen sam mcgruffie may just be that player, also if your looking for players who make their team what they are i would have to throw fozzy whittaker out there as he has racked up 3/4 of all yards and when he was hurt and not on the field we lost and when he was he won. Imo without fozzy pearland would not be in the playoffs. And hes just now heating up after sufferin from that lingering ankle injury, but has almost 900 yds in last three games.

William Cole will get a great deal of consideration.
He stepped in for injured QB Courtney Roberson (ACL in spring ball) from the beginning of the year and has only done the following:
163 carries for 1,631 yards and 25 rushing TD's
63-106 for 1,100 yards, 11 TD's and 6 INT's passing
(That's 2,631 yards and 36 TD's of total offense!!)
He leads the entire Metroplex by 309 yards rushing...as a QB!
...All the while leading his team to an undefeated record and over 480 yards of offense per game.

there are two defensive players in Seguin who could put up an argument
If Marcus Richardson wouldn't have gotten injured and would have been 100 % in the Westlake game and played these final two games he was on pace to have 170 regular season tackles to go along with some sacks, some forced fumbles, recovered fumbles, and INT's and a blocked punt returned for a touch down. Not sure on the exact stats except the tackles. He will be back by the playoffs and he could be back this week but there is no reason to play him. If we make a playoff run he should recieve consideration for DPOY,IMO.

that one video really isnt all in all representative of McGuffies skill. ive never seen somebody able to run and cut laterally and get back to full speed so quickly. he has an unnatural ability to avoid defenders.. we have literally had 3 tv stations come to our practice field in the past 2 days to see this kid in person.. he is the real deal and only at a junior... his soph. year Nike Combine stats speak for themselves at a 41 inch vertical and a laser timed 40 at 4.34 with a shuttle speed at 3.8... people say his size isnt enough... guys hes only a junior and look at the majority of 4-5 star senior backs in the nation... i see 160-170??? Sam weighs 180 at 5'10 and still has a year and a half plus another summer to improve on that... look out for him next year his athletic ability is gona blow people out of the water. he ran for 270 yards on 12 carries for 5 td's in ONE QUARTER last week  once i get my hands on a better highlight video i will keep yall updated

Unstoppable sometimes gets redefined in the playoffs... But I know that has nothing to do with the thread itself... Best luck to all!

This may just be me, but I think giving a quarterback from SLC Player of the Year honors every year is like the NCAA giving Texas Tech quarterbacks the Heisman every year because they have unbelievable numbers. Now obviously this is not an exact comparison because SLC actually wins, and wins alot. And even though the players that have played that position at SLC have been very good, including Dodge, I still have to believe it is somewhat of a system type of deal where they are thriving in that spot because of the system they are involved in. Anyway, I know some of you SLC fans and others may not agree with me, but that is just my opinion.

Nathan Dick of Allen isn't getting the press of some listed but he's passed for 2100 yards and 17 TDs to 0 INTs for a good Allen team so far. That's amazing. He even missed a game to injury.
Ron Brooks of Irving Macarthur would be a strong candidate if his team was having a better season.

I wasn't saying earlier anything negative about SLC. I truly think what they have done over the past 5 years or so is amazing. And I think that Riley is going to end up being by far the most talented quarterback to come from that system (which is saying alot). It just seems like it could be difficult to separate the "true studs" from the "system bred quarterbacks." That being said Dodge is a stud. But I see Cole as being right up there with him.

I really think Dodge has an excellent chance to get it this year. I thought a couple of years ago that Jamaal Charles should have won the award. However, it looks like your team needs to contend for a title in order to win.
That is probably a fair criteria considering that it is the same with almost all individual football awards i.e. the Heisman, MVP etc.

by my estimation, there are easily 10-15 kids deserving of the poy award every year, and only rarely is one head and shoulders above the rest. the voting is claimed to be based on the reg season only, but curiously the result is released the day before the state title game. hmmmmm?
