I hope that not many are killed and that the city will be repair-able. It's below sea level so it is going to flood, BAD...
My prayers go out to everyone about to go through that hurricane.

Unfortunately the flood waters may be their for a while....and even worse they may mix with some stuff such as sewage, coffins and debris...making it toxic which is even more worse.

Glad to hear they made it. This storm is really scarry and I feel that we're going to be feeling its aftermath for awhile. Hopefully everyone gets out because New Orleans may not be the same city that we all know it is after this storm.

It's good to hear your family is out of danger.
Hopefully New Orleans can be 'repaired' so to speak. And hopefully loss of life will either be none or be kept at a minimal.

It may end up in Longview.. That thing is as big as the state of Texas on the radar! They said it was the biggest ever, like you said, but it was also going to hit the worse possible place, New Orleans. Glad to see your people got away from it.

From the research I have done on the city in the past couple of hours, it seems like a 1 foot wave of water into the city would make it seem like that movie. 12 ft below sea level? That is hard to understand. Thats a lot in my mind.

New Orleans is below Sea Level. Even the Mississippi river there is higher. The only reason most of the area has structures on it is because of damns, dikes and levies (not sure I spelled all that right) have kept alot of the water out of the city.
If they get hit by alot of water surge it could overwelm all the man made structures and basically engulf the city with water and turn it into a Lake. :(
But, I'm sure there is people on here that know "ALOT" more about this then me and can explain it about 1,000 times better.

dikes? Really? I think you are correct, that is what I have read mostly. It makes you wonder whey build there? Oh well, they have dodged them in the past, but I dont know if this one will break down before it gets there. It seems to be building, not getting smaller.

I saw lines of people going into it on TV. This is the second time they have done it this year I think. I guess its better than nothing. They have free food and stuff.

After reading some articles i'm not sure if it's such a good idea to stay in the Superdome....they'll be stuck in the middle of a "toxic soup" (as CNN puts it). I would've elected to leave but....maybe they don't have anywhere else to go...

Alot of those people didnt have the ability to leave New Orleans so they basically went to the Superdome.

They said that it seats 74,000 and there are only about 40,000 people there so the theory is they can sit up high enough that it won't be a problem. Fox News has done some incredible coverage tonight.
I guess we'll know soon -- Prayers are definately what are needed!

But the center in which the field is may contain some deadly chemicals....some of which may be poisonous by just breathing...and if power is cut, they may not be able to circulate air in the building...

Is that why the ANG took them there and are staying there with them? I haven't heard that on any legitimate news channel.

I'm with ya Raiderdad. Anyway, I would rather take my chances on the Superdome 50 yard line then outside with 150 mph winds and bricks, boards and cars flying all over the place.

Hopefully the fact that it's hitting in the early a.m. the storm will get knocked down to a catagory 3. But still it's the rain and storm surge that's the big problem. Prayers to our La. neighbors.
