As we all are looking at the current powerhouses to go deep in the playoffs, what is the big upsets you remember in 5A playoffs. My favorite was the 1982 Regional Final when Trinity upset Permian 8-6.

Lufkin out in rd. 1 against Garland in '03.
L'view out in rd. 1 last year after being highly favored to contend for the trophy.
Those are just a couple from recent memory.

That woudl be '03 for Lufkin and yeah that was a bitter pill to swallow. A lesson to everyone: never assume anything.

That was a slaughter... Westfield was running and passing all over NS... i was thier that game. Strange was the only word to describe it, because i went to the Humble/Westfield game that year and Humble lost 36-20...and humble went 5-5 that year... What was odder for me was that NS who was 11-0 lost badly to westfield...(who at the time i underestimated)

Those Westfield guys just hit a run and the streak lasted for 4 weeks until the clock struck midnight. They got me, too. I was looking at boxscores and saw a team that had a lot of turnovers that year and lost to PAM. I knew they had size and speed, but didn't think they could keep from making mistakes against Judson. As it was, Judson made the mistakes and Westfield moved on to play T Lee.
Westfield had a 4 week run in the playoffs in 2004 where they played flawless football and that was with a rookie coach.

yes that was quite a game for westfield.. they could do no wrong.. everything went thier way.. and with the talent they had on the field..made it a lopsided score....
we should have known that barely escaping pearland in the first round proved this team was no near as good as 03....

Lets add that Deer Park beat Clear Creek in preseason play in 2005 as well and the playoff game was played in DP's back yard (Pasadena Memorial Stadium). There are lots of factors that can give a team with talent a losing record. Injured players return, young QB's mature and newly learned systems take hold at the end of a season and not a the beginning. After all these are just 16 and 17 year olds that were not recruited and anything can happen.

2001 Keller Fossil Ridge 23 Lewisville 20
We were 9-1 coming into that game with our only loss on the season coming to Mesquite 21-18 in OT to start the season. Mesquite ended up going 15-0 and winning the D1 state title. The papers and everyone in the media had been talking about a L'ville/Mesquite rematch in the state semis. Fossil Ridge had bigger plans. Fossil Ridge came out and played a excellent football game. Moving the football against our defense like no one else had and slowing down our offense better than most too. We had a chance to tie the game late but instead of kicking the FG Coach Gage elected to go for 6 real late in the 4th quarter. Facing a 4th and goal from the 2 we ran a smash play that had worked all game, our all everything RB Michael Sampson was stopped for no gain and FR was able to hold on for the victory. I still agree with the call that Gage made and never second guessed him. FR went on to make a semifinal run defeating Arlington the next week and then ending Midland Lee's 3 year title run before losing to Mesquite in the state semis.

For SLC, it would be a first round win back in their first year in 4A - 1994. They were 5-4 in the regular season which was the worst won-loss record in 12 years. Earlier in the year they had their 73 regular season game winning streak broken and were coming off a shut out loss to Northwest the previous week. However, Ledbetter got the boys fired up enough to upset Waxahachie 26-23 which had ended the season ranked #2 in the state.

That Fossil Ridge team was good that year...had a LB on defense that was a manchild (Latu I think)...they gave us our only loss in the regular season that year...I still thought they would lose to L'Ville though...that was a pretty big upset...

The pass/catch combo of Zach Dahman and Michael DuPriest was very impressive. They hooked up for a a few big plays against us that afternoon and made life a living hell for our secondary. They did the exact same thing to Arlington and Midland Lee before running into a great pass rush and very athletic secondary from Mesquite.

Garland dismantling Austin Westlake in 99 in Waco by the tune of 52-14. Westlake was extremely overrated at the time IMO

Yeah, I was at that game. Clear Creek came to play and Deer Park got caught thinking Creek would just roll over because they had already been beat earlier in the season. Needless to say, I was pretty mad after this game. DP's offense just didn't get it together. And the defense couldn't, either, since CC moved the ball with ease on the last and winning drive of the game.

Strange...that one seems to have escaped my memory...:D
1994 Katy over Beaumont West Brook was a huge shocker. West Brook was #1 in the state and #1 in the nation by some. To say that Bruin team had speed would be like saying the surface of the sun is hot.

I disagree with the assesment of bonehead things costing Ridge against Mesquite. The 2001 Mesquite team is one of the most forgotton state champs. They went 15-0 and played excellent defense. They had a front 4 that was very good and was getting pressure on Dahman all game. Their secondary was very physcial and athletic and had great size and was able to contain Dupreist and the rest of the F-Ridge recievers. The Mesquite wishbone led by Mard Hodges at QB was able to control the football too. I firmly believe the better team won in the semis that afternoon at Texas stadium.

it was 31-0 at the half, it was cold, it was a long way back to Garland, and we were all sick to our stomachs. I stayed till the end, but I don't fault those who left. the only interesting things left to see at that point were the tuba player falling down and the boy on the Lobo drill team.
As sick as we all felt after the Lobo thrashing (if it indeed took place and was not some surreal nightmare), the elation we felt watching our underdog Owls beat Lufkin the next year was sooooo sweet...

I also remember the Garland win over SGP in the 1999 State-Semifinals. Im not certain, but i think SGP was favored to win it, and Garland won it on a game winning field goal. Garland would then go on to win the state title, easily too. I was pissed, because i knew SGP would have gotten their first State Championship appearance and win if they would have beat Garland.
That was a great SGP team anchored by WR stand out B.J. Johnson, who would go on to play alongside WR Roy Williams(now the Detroit Lions WR) at the University of Texas at Austin. B.J. was signed by the Denver Broncos, but broke his ankle in training camp his rookie year, and they never gave him another look. To bad for someone with such great talent to never get his chance.

I only call this an upset because in the late 80's, no one went into Ratliff Stadium and beat Permian in the playoffs. But in '87, Plano came in and stunned the black side 29-21. Over 21,000 saw it. Permian was up 21-7 at the half and thought it was over...me included...but Kimbrough made some great adjustments at the half and scored 22 unanswered.

I dont think this next one is a upset but it certainly was a shock to everyone in attendance and who read about it after the game and that was in 94 when Permian came into Tx Stadium and beat Lewisville 37-0. 5 times would probably be accurate. I dont think we had thrown the football 5x in our previous two games combined. We came in with a very quick backfield and Permian just shut the option down cold. Our QB was being destroyed by the DE their CB were hammering the pitch man, their DT's and LB's were doing a great job of stopping the trap, blast, lead or any inside running game we had. It was a total defensive effort on the part of Permian and after seeing them drill us the way they did I did not think Plano would be able to beat them the following week, boy was I ever wrong.

the back for SGP that year was Gideon Leonard. He was a very goodfootball player. Iwas able to watch video of that SGP team, they were very good. When they played Lewisville that year both came in undefeated and ranked 1 and 2 in the area and 2 and 6 in the state. We choked in the playoffs and SGP didnt.
That game with Garland was outstanding aswas their game with Abilene the week before.

This was in 4a but hebron losing first round to Woodrow Wilson after being heavily favored to win it all that year. It was in 2004.
i went to that game. what a let down :( . one good thing about the game though, was seeing Sergio Kindle (sp?) play. He was and still is an amazing athlete. I think we lost that game because the hawks were way to cocky going into that game. they were drinking their own koolaid and got shutdown.

That was probably the best football game I have witnessed in person. A back and forth brawl in the pouring rain. It was truely epic. As well as SGP played, they probably would have been state champions had they won that game. Who was that bruising fullback for the warriors that year? Gideon Leonard or something. I wish i had that game on tape :(
i was at that game too, and it was simply the best game i have ever seen in person. I wish i could relive that day, but with the outcome a little different:p lol

My personal Fav...
Plano West vs. DeSoto 2004
Plano West, in our first playoff game in the schools LONG 6 year history (sarcasm), falls behind 14-0 in the first two minutes off a DeSoto drive and INT returned for a TD. Trade scores the rest of the game. Force turnovers in the final minutes of the game and win 45-35.

yeah i do call that an upset!!!, so basically what your sayin is y'all were a one man team?
No. If you had ever watch WF previous to that game you would know that they were not a one man team. But thier QB was essential to thier sucess, the had alot of inexperiance in thier depth chart. So brining Inexperianced QB into a playoff situation is going to take a toll on you. Espeically on team morale. I think the kid only threw 1 INT all year long. They counted on the balance of thier offense to score massive amounts of points.
And im pretty sure that thier QB wasnt the only one out, but im not sure. Injuries can kill playoff sucess...Quickly.
If he would of stayed int... The Final score would of been somthing like 35-17.
Was it an upset... I dont know.. Not if Judson was as good as Judson fans said they were.

what about the 1996 BI-district finals judson over austin bowie 32-31
1996 Division II Bi-District Playoffs: Converse Judson 32 Austin Bowie 31
Bowie raced out to a 24-0 first half lead on the talents of tailback Victor Ike. Bowie scored first in the 2nd half to make it 31-0. However, Judson would reel off an unprecedented 32 unanswered points in the final 18 minutes of the game to win 32-31. This game has gone down as one of the best come-from-behind victories in the history of 5A football.

The bottom line is...they lost QB or no QB.
