Okay okay, I know this is an easy pick, but should be a pretty good game.
It's been three years since the Dragons have played at Cowboy Stadium (56-3 SLC), and not alot has changed. Coppell has gone 21-13 over the past 3 years and as we all know SLC has gone 47-1, this intense rivalry has lacked much luster over these years, but should be a intersting game none the less.
Coppell looked pretty impressive last week against Jesuit, but Coppell is going to have to look to other players to score other then Moody im sure SLC will be on him all night long. It'll be intersting to see if Coach Mike Fuller will keep one QB in for the first half. He played all three QBs last week against Jesuit. (Jr. Kenny Graves 9-14-0 114yards, Sr. Nate Blackwell 1-1-0 8 yards, and Sr Tyler Deloach 0-0 0 yards). Coppell's defense will really have to step up this week, to stop the WR corps at SLC
Southlake played a very good game against Midland Lee on Saterday. Early on Southlakes offense took a little bit to start up, but after a couple of drives they looked like the championship team, of the past three years. Seems like Todd Dodge is exprimenting with his QBs as well, as both Greg, and Riley Dodge got playing time. Sophmore running back Tre Newton played a great game as well.

now, cowboy, i let most of your mistakes with diction and spelling slide, but you of all people on this board should be able to understand and use one particular word correctly. in your post you mention the wr core. it is corps. you aren't joining the marine core, are you?
tre didn't have a great game, he had an unassuming game, and 1 great run. dodge was not experimenting, he was forced to make adjustments to an injury which had his starting qb throwing at about 75-80% on game day, after not working out all week. now that he's seen in game situations what riley can do, it will force dc's to prepare for some serious running ability out of the qb position. you will see some situational use of riley i predict. he's the real deal.

What was the score at halftime last year?
I think the Dragons could get 70 points agian. It isn't going to make that big of a difference when the backups are in. The depth at wide receiver will show. There could possible be 9 or 10 different recievers with receptions. This is a game that will be over before it is started.

You say "rusty" (as have I) but go compare the stats from this year's Midland Lee game to last year. This year, compared to last, SLC scored more points, gained more first down, more total yards, they rushed for more yards, threw for more yards, completed more of their passes, spread the ball to more players, etc. In other words, SLC's offense, as rusty as it was, imporved in almost every offensive category compared to last year.

I think the rusty part comes in "had more turnovers." When you can have several turnovers in a game and still pull it out, it says something about the level of competition. Not a rag on ML, just a fact.

I have been waiting to see someone really hand the dragons their butt since they joined the 5A ranks and, I dont see it happening here either. Too much offense, only way I see to beat them is to keep their offense on the sidelines.
southlake thug
08-28-2005, 06:46 PM
Yeah but it is impossible to keep that offense off the field. And even if you do the Dragon Defense is very good. Also the field goal kicker Kevin Ortega is money. It's a good team this year and hopefully if things go right they will be playing late into December.

It might be a battle for field postion for Coppell, if Coppell can keep the ball away from slc for along time they have more of a chance...If Coppell can stay within the SLC 50 yard line, they should make it a close game...
Or you could just have a great defensive line and secondary like Katy this year or 2003 :) That seems to work ok.

On a warm night and on great turf SLC will destroy Coppell.
The SLC/Coppell rivalry is good in most sports but SLC has dominated on the football field for 20 years winning almost every time. Even when SLC was in 3A and they beat 4A Coppell every year. Many of the games were close but somehow SLC almost always won.

congrats man! personally i think if we come out and do what were capable of, i think this game will be a blow out like last year, but if we have some mishaps and what not like last week, it'll be a lot closer, im not going to say a score yet, because im not sure, i will give a score though before the game on friday

I dont thin Coppell will score that many points on Carroll. From what I saw on saturday, this is the best looking defense I have seen at Carroll over during their reign in 5A. They are big and physical and they are faster than a year ago.
On the offensive end of the ball, they are going to be dangerous, but I think they are going to miss Luna big time it just seems the running game is lacking, and that is expected when you have to replace a 3 year starter who brought so much to the game.
As far as this game goes, I think Carroll wins around 45-14 or somewhere in that neighborhood.

Hebron dominated us, I was not able to attend the Colleyville scrimmage and have not read how it went. As far as the playbook goes, its foreign to the players. We are in a big time adjusting period, and it could take a year or two to get a QB ready for this system. The one area that is a positive is that Coach Gaddis is playing a lot of younger kids, these kids are talented and fast, not much size, but he is bulding his program starting from the ground, I like this approach, and think it will benefit us in the long run. We will win some game this year, but making the playoffs will be tough seeing that we have to make 3 trips to Plano.

looks like one of the old time powers will make some noise again after a sabbatical. there may not be many wins coming out of clark or kimbrough this year. i just realized how cool that sounds. i talked with coach clark last night and that wonderful gentleman is doing great. hope he can catch a few of my kids games again this year. good luck to the farmers.

I wouldn't be surprised to trade again if Jesuit blows out BL...hopefully people will see Coppell's loss as a normal loss and not as a loss to Carroll.
However, I really don't believe that the DMN poll is that accurate. Dallas Jesuit dropped out after losing to John Horn last year, and wasn't put back in till they beat LH (and at 19th or so). Berkner was 13th after week 10, and we beat them.
The poll really rewards winning later in the season...Berkner's record compared to Jesuit, plus the head-to-head, shows you that JCP should have been ranked higher last year.
My Coppell-Carroll pick: Carroll 59, Coppell 24. Coppell will jump out to a 17-0 lead after SLC fumbles 3 times, and then the Coppell seniors will start an Overrated chant. SLC will tie the game by halftime, and then Coppell will will allow SLC to score 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter to run away with the game.

Haha yeah i don't see the game going quite that way. But if Moody gets in the groove and SLC defense can't stop him, then it could be interesting. But I think it will just come down to depth and just pure athleticism for SLC. We have seen a few teams jump out to early leads, and then SLC quickly come back and win.
As always I would like SLC to dominate, but it would be nice to see a good game with the rivarly that Carroll and Coppell have. But of course I hope and expect SLC to win.

they're about due, as they've been outscored something like 175-45 over the last 3 games with slc and are something like 6-35 all time. gotta think they'll turn it around someday right. btw, there is no love lost between coppell and coach dodge either. they(ringo) ran a flea-flicker reverse pass in 98 or 99 when he was at fridge, late in a 50-0 blowout. ringo of course now coaches at pesh, so it wouldn't surprise me if some big numbers came up there too. one of ringo's boasts in his interview was his undefeated record vs dodge. nothing pleases me more than taking that off the a-hole's resume.

Understand from "orthopod" acquaintance that Mac is about 90%...may be a long night for the game Coppell team if he is finally allowed to achieve continuity. Hopefully, questionable game calls will not be made by an extremely weak officiating crew...as in Abilene. In particular I refer to one of the two "snatchaways" which game tapes indicate was in fact a reception/completed pass and the second, the infamous no TD/fumble on the QB goal line "reach over". Film indicates it broke the plane...a TD. Will travel up to watch what I believe to be some fine coaching, solid offensive line, unually strong defensive unit, and a QB that may finally be given the opportunity to show his stuff. Looking for great things from SLC this year. This is the year of the DRAGON. Best wishes and good luck!

As far as the norm goes with Carroll destroying Coppell, I believe I recall a game in either 92 or 93 when little ol 3A Carroll put up 70 on the 4a Cowboys, I believe it has been the norm in the 30 + played between these 2 programs that Carroll walks away with a rather easy victory, I see no reason to think this week wont be the same.

well if 34 out of 40 isn't a norm, then what is? they all haven't been blowouts by any means, and in the more recent past (last 6-8 years, coppell has had more success than in the past, but not this week. and if coppell can somehow manage to make the playoffs, they'll likely get another lethal dose in november.

My young son likes to play a game in the stands at SLC games. When SLC gets the ball we all guess how many plays it will take for SLC to score. Some usually guess 4 or 5 or 6 etc. We all know that passing teams can score fast. However, back in the 3A days we used to play the same game with my older sons. That was really amazing since SLC ran the wishbone with two tight ends back then. They still scored fast and furious.
I don't mean to rub it in for the good Coppell fans but last year SLC had 11 offensive possesions in the game with Coppell. They scored a touchdown on the first 10. During the 11th possesion time expired.

You green ppl are mean :p just humor me comeon now...two years ago SLC only beat us by 20 :p
Im even on your side in this game, i think y'all will win, at least humor me and say it'll be a close game...
I don't know if it will be a close game tomorrow or not. However, I've seen Coppell beat SLC in key games in basketball, baseball and other sports. Coppell has one of the best all-around progams in the state. Many schools think they have a top all-around program but Coppell really does.
2005 Final 5A Lone Star Cup Standings:
1. Humble Kingwood 106
2. Southlake Carroll 82
3. The Woodlands 78
4. Austin Westlake 72
5. Cedar Park 64
6. Coppell 54

Coppells football program is the weakest out of all the programs at the school. Cowboys Soccer is a power house in Texas 5A and could prob compete with most schools around the nation. Vollyball this year will have a tough year ahead of them, this is a rebuilding year for them, Basketball teams will make the play-offs this year and could be threat...Hockey team will want to be one of the best again, they look very strong on paper. Track might be intersting alot of the football players are now on the track team, and there is some speed on this years football team. Cowboys baseball and softball is a pretty sure win in the playoffs

Yeah Coppell Basketball team is always pretty good. Coach Chastin is a real good coach. Coppell has a decent Golf team most years also.

I think that SLC will win but there will be a lot of interesting things to watch. Against ML, the defense gave up some running yards and some points. Coppell has a very good running game and will try to keep the SLC offense off the field. This is a new year and a new team. Anything is possible. However this will also be a game where the adjustments from last weeks game will be tried out. All in all I think SLC will win but it should be interesting for a bit.

stick out one more finger there goose. by my estimation, the last 3 games have been blowouts, or does holding us under 60 count as a close game. when you tally only 3 , it's a blowout, and it will be a 4th this week.
2003 massive blowout? I believe that game came down to the final minutes. I can only hope that SLC holds up all this talk tommorow

i predict moody gets 145 yds rushing. 2nd week in a row to give up 100+. i also predict we start a new loosing strek for time of possession, which we won last week. i think we were 3-13 last year, and about 8-41 all time in 5a. if there is a more meaningless stat, i haven't seen it.

thats acuttaly pretty interesting, and i dont think there is a more meangless stat because obviously it doesnt prove anything here, it almost proves the shorter we have the ball the more we win 48-1 vs 8-41 thats pretty close

Judson almost always has the ball longer, but thats because of the "If the run doesn't work, keep running it 'till it does" philosophy.

I fully expect the Dragon Defense to have a great game. Last week they gave up 2 scores on drives that were continued on penalties. Each of those defensive penalties came at a point when the defense had stopped Lee and 3rd and long. Another score came after the defense just got off the field and were right back on after a fumbled punt. Look out for the Dragon D tonight Baby!

Perhaps this as a new SV new fight song would be more appropriate. Coppell's winning percentage against SLC (as low as it is) is higher than SV's.

Both our 8th grade teams won..B-Team shut them out 19-0 and A Team trashed them 40 something to 0. The A team has a move-in that is 6'2" 200 W/ speed & agility, and plays WR & DE and just flat dominates....
