View Full Version : Question for Houston Guys
How does a 3A school survive, stay open and compete smack dead in the middle of the largest city in Texas? I'm talking about Stafford High School...I went over there for lunch yesterday...saw their stadium and to be honest I FORGOT all about that school? I mean, you would think that being right off of 59@Wilcrest(Murphy Rd) their athelets would be in the FB or Alief Schools? Is this rare? I know they are struggling this year, but some years they are actually competitive. are there any other schools 4A and under in any other major city?

Well, Dallas is filled with very conmpetitive 4A and 3A schools.
Stafford is the only municipal school district in the state. They seceded from the Fort Bend ISD and Houston ISD in 1977. It is a very small school ditrict and wants to be that way.

Stafford MSD is a whole different animal in itself.... its a municipal school district which means its tied to the city of stafford instead of an independent school district that gets funded by the state and the taxing authority... I would guess that it survives because the ppl in the city of stafford want the small town school like education for the children in that particualar community....and if i recall.. thats why they were formed by... de annexing??? (i dont even know if thats a word) from Fort bend ISD and HISD if im not mistaken..... but to answer your question... i think community loyalty is what keeps them up and running....

WOW...guys...serioulsy, I didn't know that. So it's loyalty....or parents/students wanting that small town atmosphere in the big city.....I'm also suprised that students from FB or HISD don't go to Stafford to be the "Showcase" to get more attention.

3A dallas madison is the first school that came to my mind. They are very competitive in hoops.
Plenty of 4A schools, the notorious gatekeeper of 4A enrollment- Highland Park is the most dominant.
I know these are 2 Dallas schools, but they are the first ones that came to mind.

4A is kind of normal...I just didnt think there would be 3A or 2A schools in big cities.

I could be wrong but I think they recently moved up to 3A ...I THINK they were 2A for awhile. I mean needvile and East Bernard arent really in the Houston limits.

HISD has a few schools that should be 3a also.

Agreed...Houston Reagan....a playoff team in 4A lost 55-6 to Brookshire Royal and lost Big to St. Pius last year.

This is a good thread. My Alma Mater, Sharpstown(4a now) lost to Needville(3a) for Needville's Home Coming.
