The game did seem drag along as two ball control offenses methodically tried to work its way down the field. Which also made for quick game with the clock never seeming to stop running.
I thought that Lake's performance was above average. :) Considering the lack of varsity experienced players on the field and that most of players on the field were getting there first varsity start against Tomball. The quarterback (Gilmer/Junior) executed the option precisely, Geno Blow ran with power to go along with his breakaway speed, the runningbacks Clark(Junior) and Feister(Junior) didn't get alot of opportunities to show what their capable of but still played solidly. The offensive line with 2 seniors, 2 juniors, and 1 sophomore, played solidly. The receivers didn't get show much except their blocking skills. Vincent Brooks(Senior) made a nice play on the only ball thrown during the game and was robbed of his reception by the officials as the Tomball DB stole the ball from him on the ground.
The defense was outstanding!!! The defense is making a statement they may be better that the one that went to the semi-finals last year. While they still have to prove they can play different styles of offense and continue to dominate - they certainly have got off to a good start. The secondary was outstanding, particularly Zamora(Senior/2 ints), but Andre Blow(Junior/Geno's brother) also looks to be an outstanding tackler and has a knack for the ball at free safety. Also, Alexander(Senior) played solidly at strong safety and is a natural as the captain and leader of the defense. The linebackers were also outstanding with McKinney and Hernandez - they never seem to be out of position and McKinney is bringing a load when he makes a tackle. The D-line played solidly, but at times seem to have problems stacking the line against a very strong Tomball offensive line and an impressive fullback. But they made the stops when they had to - Sledge(Senior) and Chad Brandon(Junior) made impressive behind the line stops when the team needed it most. McNary(Senior) and Benard(Senior) both looked extremely quick and will make bigger contributions in games against teams that pass more.
Special Teams was average and needs improvement.
Coaching - above average. Defensive coaches deserve an A+, Offensive coaches an A-. The Lake offense was extremely conservative - which was probably an attempt to keep the defense out of bad field position and to keep them from playing too much and wearing down. For that the Head Coach gets an A+.
Props to Tomball - their defense was strong and disciplined. They also brought a defensive scheme that Lake did not prepare for - which worked great for the first half until the coaches were able to make adjustments at halftime. The O-line, the QB and FB were all impressive. The RBs weren't. The deep pass plays were their only bad play calls - but plays that turnout poorly are always considered bad calls after the fact.
Lake, good luck next week against LaPorte

I'd say Lake needs to concentrate on remedial English classes. Tomball was not overly impressive when Consol met them in a scrimmage last week. Come back in a few weeks and blow your horn loudly when you're 3-0. :)

My youngest daughter is at Lake and knows your sons and wife from their Seabrook days.
As I recall you also played at UF so I value your opinion as not just someone who is a Lake bandwagoner after last year. I thought the game was very much a feeling out process and I don't think either team came close to showing their true potential. Gilmer played a solid game for his first varsity start; needs to improve on his reads and make quicker decisions but that will come with experience. Defense played strong and we need them to buy some time until the offense gells.

Dre, I assume you are from Clear Lake, and might be able to help me. Do you have any idea where the RB from last year is going to play in college? Jones I think was his name. Thanks

Thanks. Any ideas as to if he is going to get any playing time? I figure you could put that kid in a few positions. DB, SS, anywhere where speed is key. He has more than about anyone I have seen in a long time.

FLAGator....you and I must have watched two different games.
The play was sloppy at best and I wouldn't be giving Gilmer that high of props. He literally handed the ball of to the Tomball defender when they should have scored. The box score shows his effort (13- 38 yards). Compared to Oswald who rushed for over 120 yards against Tomball last year. Clark and Feaster had their chances and did nothing, compared to Jones who rushed for over 130 yards last year against Tomball. Gino was stopped cold except the one run the second play of the 3rd quarter where he slipped off tackle and showed his speed for 65 yards (biggest offensive play for Lake of the game). Fumbles and interceptions were the name of the game for Lake. Lake had 5 fumbles but only lost two and one interception. This was an extremely lucky game for Lake and a far from well executed option offense (poor decisions by Gilmer). Much improvement needed since Tomball isn't that good and half the power rating of Lake.
Defense struggled stopping the Tomball fullback, except when he fumbled the ball. That was the key to Lake victory because it gave the ball to Lake in Tomball territory each time. Considering that Tomball ran the exact same offense as Lake, there was no excuse for missed assignments. Lake shut Tomball down last year and scored 30 plus points. The two gift interceptions that were thrown straight to Anthony Zamora showed how terrible the Tomball passing game was and it would have been embarrassing if he had dropped them.
In summary this is not even close to last years Lake team and lots of improvement is needed. That said, does not mean Lake is out by any means. District 24-5A is terrible this year except Ball and Pearland. Clear Creek lost to Friendswood a 4A school, Clear Brook lost to Nimitz looking bad, Brazoswood lost to Dobie in a shut out and Alvin was stomped by Elkins leaving the 3rd slot to Lake for the taking in the district. Galveston and Pearland will battle for 1st and 2nd in the district not Lake unless they improve considerable. Who knows they could pull that off, its a long season but definately not based on Thursdays effort.
Less Slanted Game Observation and realistic facts, no wishful thinking. If Gino is lossed for grades or injury the season will be a long one for Lake. (Key observation is that Gino would better serve the Lake option attach as a half back instead having his head right at the QB's butt. He has the speed to get the corner and make defenses pay.)
