Right now, I'm sitting on a 4.0 GPA and the top 5% of my class.

I'm thinking about going into the medical field, however engineering also interests me.

so some schools I'm looking at are:

Texas, SMU, Baylor, USC

suggestions would help

Visit USC first. Good school, but it is in the hood. I'm talking Smokey and Craig's neighborhood type hood.

Baylor's known for it's reputation in the Medical field.

As well one of the world's top Psychologist teaches there.

baylor is a great school for the med. field. as far as engineering is concerned, Texas a&m has one of the best departments around, and depending on what type of engineer you want to be, texas tech is great as well. they have a top notch petroleum engineering department.

Do you know why anatomy and geology courses are required for students in A&M's engineering department?

The administration got tired of hearing that Aggie engineers couldn't tell their butts from a hole in the ground :p

Just kidding. I do like that joke though.

Biomedical engineering comes to mind as a field you might find interesting then, given your interests. UCLA at one time had a pretty good reputation in this area, but I really haven't look around lately. So you might want to check out their program currently.

I went to Baylor in the late 80s. Good times, thought its a lot more expensive now. Nearly 8 times more.

Medical field = Baylor. Good time = a lot of other schools. I would say worry about a "good time" after school when you are making some nice cash. If you really are interested in the Medical field, I would not even visit another school if you plan to stay in Texas. However, if you do not mind going out of state there is- Harvard, John Hopkins, Univ or Penn, UCSF (instead of USC), Duke, Stanford, Yale, UCLA (another Cali choice better than USC), UCSD (another before USC). These are some that my wife considered. She was in the medical field before moving to administration in the education system again. We did a lot of research, and Baylor is for sure your best Texas choice. They do accept less than 7% of applications. 93% are rejected. It will also cost you, but all of them will in reality. Good luck.

Remember to choose a SCHOOL not a department or major. Chances are that you will change your mind about what you want to do while you are in college. Make sure that you like your department, but make sure even more that you would still be happy if you had to change.

Also, remember that Baylor University and Baylor College of Medicine are two seperate entities. There are plenty of good schools in Texas if you want to go into the medical field. If you perform well in your undergrad classes (in almost any major) at a respectable university, you will probably get into a fine medical school. By the way, history and philosophy majors have the highest acceptance rate of any other major when it comes to medical school.

When you are in high school, people will try to convince you that you HAVE to go to certain schools if you want to have a career in medicine, or law, or any number of professions. Don't believe them, professional schools are going to look at what type of classes you took and how you performed in them far more than the name of your institution.

UT
Baylor
Texas A&M
University of Houston
Texas Tech
Rice
Abilene Christian (acceptance rate of about 85% over the past 5 years)
St. Mary's

All these institutions, and more, will do fine in preparing you for medical school, and you will stay right here in Texas. The state universities will also save you some serious $$$ too.

That is so true! When I look at schools I look at the academics, and if they are what I’m looking for then I look at university life. I am very social, and like to be involved in a lot of community service and such, so going to an ivy is not what I wanted. I know they have "lives" there, but I would mesh better with the "average" student at a non ivy school. I want to learn as much as I can and have fun!

If you want to stay in san Antonio I suggest trinity, because it is such a great school, and you wouldn't have to live at home (required to live on campus at least your 1st year) and if you want to go out of state, you better visit because I REALLY wanted to go to university of Georgia, and when we visited I just wasn't impressed, it didn't fit with me, so I found Clemson, in south Carolina, and it meshes well with me.

Good luck... I'm going through the same thing!!

Thats the best thing you can do, is visit and get a feel for a place youi will spen the next 4-6 years of your life.
I for one love the atmosphere of UGA and it is a place that I know I would have been just as happy at as I have been at UNT. However it is not for everyone. I also feel the same about Clemson. Great atmosphere, friendly campus and excellent academics.
THe biggest mistake a lot of people make when choosing a college is not to choose a place where all your friends are going or where your siginicant other is attending. Make sure it is the place you want to be first and foremost. The rest usually takes care of itself.

It was during the summer (not many students on campus) and it was muggy/raining... so I think that had some effect on my liking it, but I just couldn’t see myself there, but it is very pretty and the city of Athens is nice lol

Not every school is for everybody. You did the smart thing by taking a visit there. Once you realized it wasnt for you, you might have possibly saved yourself 4 years of frustration had you decided to attend school there without ever getting a feel for the campus or student life. You sound like you are on the right track and I wish you the best in your up coming college experience. These years have truly been the best of my life so far.

I went to visit ACU and went to a banquet this last thursday, you want to talk about an amazing school. 100% of the students in the buisness program have a job before they graduate because of internships.

i've seen all the schools except smu

Baylor plus its in central texas close to every major city, decent size city also a nice community and crazy but lovable fans
cons. lots of construction will kill you in traffic plus due to the size of waco you can do it all in a week but if you don't mind the drive to dallas go for it.

USC in the heart of L.A also close to the ghetto learning wise i can't say much cause i don't know many people from there but medical wise as well as if your into science thats a good school, fans are loyal also obnoxious the school is always up beat and on the go you might see alot of celebs around the school.

As far as the City it's L.A always excited and always hell its just as much fun as it can be annoying you'll always have somthing to do people to meet and so on so forth

cons traffic superficial people and lots of clubs wont let you in cause you don't have the "beautiful face" also some people are to jumpy but its a fair city.

UT, obiviously the number 1 sports school voted by SI for no reason if your into law this is your school, as well as art and some technology. The UT fans are way nicer than aggy fans for sure and it being in austin it's very diverse much like L.A.

It's austin its a weird city in a good way not a bad way if it's safe for homosexuals (no pun) it's gotta be safe, of the major cities it has the lowest crime in texas plus has become the music capitol of the usa (dont ask me how thats what i herd from a reliable source) has events such as south by south west pecan fest and many more. Also is the most filmed in city in the state of texas.

cons traffic sucks big time here also there is a nude bike fest which isn't a joy to seem lot of construction being done and by night time drunk people are the majority of people on the streets along with the other weirdos.

SMU, i dont know much about this place i hear graduating from here will make you alot of money. Academically i've never herd a complaint so that has to be a plus can't say its much different than baylor accept not as prestigious.

It's houston the biggest city in the state of texas also has worse weather the city rarely has traffic unless your going down i-10 alot of out of states from east coast are around here as well, alot of cajun influence has take lay on houston which makes it more interesting. There is always somthing to do here year round.

cons bad weather like i said high crime rate from stats thats been shown on these forums cops are sorta bossy in the sense they think they are the law. some uptight people you can do it all here and have some things left over but with such an expanded city are you really gonig to want to take the time to drive all over the place.

Hope this can help you out in some ways just my own unbiased opinion (pick UT its better than the rest !)
