Huge game dudes and I can't even find a thread on it. Where's the talk? We got 5 pages on the Lufkin/Longview scrimmage thread that won't die - let's move on.
Who wins and why?
I like TWHS since it's so early. Does Katy have an answer for Drabek? Can The Highlander qb get the ball to Drabek? Are Katy's big hosses in shape yet? I'd love to be there, but it didn't work out.

I guess this is just one of those games that speaks for itself. Too bad one of these teams are gonna start out 0-1. I'm gonna find me a good seat and enjoy it. But tonight its the University of North Shore vs. Elsik.

This is the first time our game of the week has gone without a thread for this long. I'm surprised because I know there are plenty of Katy and Woodlands people registered. I think fans on both sides are very excited, cautiously optimistic and just want to get to game time.
As far as Drabek is concerned...they have more than one QB capable enough to get him the ball. However, with Drabek if it's anywhere near his general area it's going to be a catch. Drabek is a first class talent.
Katy's free safety is Will Thompson. He is the one that made the game sealing INT against Southlake Carroll two years ago as a sophomore. He is the fastest player on the team, and can obviously cover the deep parts of the field when needed because of his speed and football abilities.
The Tigers have three of four starters back from a secondary that gave up under 100 yards passing per game last year.
Katy also has five guys back on the offensive line that started at least one game last year. Three of those were full-time starters. Every starter returns on the defensive line, so Katy is a lot more experienced in the trenches than normal. Usually, many seniors start so there is a lot to replace on each line but that is not the case this year.
I think The Woodlands returns one starter on the offensive line and two on the defensive line. So, the battle in the trenches will be interesting given the difference in experience.
Both teams are going to be capable in the passing game. Austin Hutson is an athletic lefty for The Woodlands, and I thought he should have started last year over the bigger senior Meinzer. Katy's QB is Andy Dalton (6'2 185). He is the best passer the Tigers have had since Jared Kaspar in 99-2000. Dalton got good playing time last year (10 TDs to 2 INTs).
Chris Burns is the main man in The Woodlands' running game. Burns has very good speed, but is unproven right now as someone who can carry the ball 20 plus times a game. Junior Jamarcus Haywood and DJ Smalls can also carry the ball for The Woodlands, but I've heard doubts as to their playing status. I won't comment further on that because it's not fair to speculate. If they are both able to go, they add a lot to the Highlander ground game.
Katy's running game will be two/three pronged attack. Senior Brandon King (5'8 180 4.4) will be the starter. King is extremely quick and has breakaway speed to match. He played varsity last year. Sophomore Aundre Dean (6'1 180 4.45) will rotate in to keep King fresh. Trackster and former Ike transfer Lamar Stills can play RB or WR.
Speed wise, this is easily Katy's most gifted team all-around in at least five years. The Woodlands also have very good speed in the backfield at at the skill spots (WR-DB).
I expect an exciting football game and the atmosphere in Reliant should be amazing. Katy and The Woodlands are the two best supported 5A programs in the Houston area so the place should be rocking.

Thanks KT -- sounds like Thompson will be shading to Drabek's side - I think the other TWHS wr was a senior last year - so I don't know who may step up to keep a double team off of Kyle. Will be a great matchup.
On the flip side - it will be interesting to see how Astin's shoes are filled - he will be missed.

And how do Lufkin fans know how Katy plays at the beginning of the season??
Don't remind me, Panther fans.
Actually, Katy's 2000 team was the fastest starting team I can remember. I think they started that season beating Judson very handily at the HEB Classic in San Antone and went on undefeated.
How Katy will do against TWHS? I dunno. Too early to guess. I kinda expect it to be a close game. TWHS supposedly has good team this year plus everyone in Houston area wants to beat Katy anytime of the season. I hope the Highlander fans pack their side of the stadium. It would be great to have a playoff type atmosphere at the beginning of the season.
But, I gotta be a 'homer' and say Katy by 7.
KT2000...Which side are you gonna be on at Crump tonight? Will there be a Katy cap on your noggin or a 5A T-shirt on your back? I lean towards being on North Shore's side since the other team is a district rival. I hope there is other Katy or 5A supporters there to shoot the breeze with.

University of North Shore vs. Elsik.
What exactly is that supposed to mean dada? I assume your refering to the way North Shore seems to always be able to replace lost talent with talnet that is just as good if not better some times. Or is there something else that I am not seeing that would bring about such a title?
As for the Katy and Woodlands game no doubt it will be a slobber knocker. Both team would like nothing more to start their season off with a win over a very good football team. As far as Drabek goes I think the Katy secondary should be able to contain him. And I hope they don't get too beat up as they play us in two weeks. Wouldn't want to beat them at less than a hundred percent.

I call them the University of Northshore...because every year they seem to turn out athlete after athlete...so does Elsik....Elsik University dosent have the same ring as University Of North Shore. :D

THIS WILL BE A BATTLE!! If we can stop them on Offense I think we have a chance. Main thing is we need DJ Smalls playing and Haywood needs to be there to back up Burns at the RB. I can not wait until this game!! Gonna be Packed also! I have one thing to say to the Katy sea of RED!!
LET'S GET IN ON TIGER'S!! :D :D

I think Katy's offensive line will help the running game to have very little drop off from Aston. This year Katy has some big athletic receivers as far as Katy receivers go. Katy can and will pass the ball this year and that will help the running game as well. Defensively the strength will be on the D line, but the secondary won't be bad. I think they will put Thompson on Drabek in this game. Thompson has the speed and skill to slow Drabek down. Drabek will get his but Coach Joseph is too smart to allow him to hurt Katy bad. I think Katy's line will put enough pressure on the Woodland's QB to make the deep ball a tough option. It should be a good game where both teams are good enough to expose the other's weaknesses, which isn't necessarily a bad thing in pre district ball. I look for Katy to pull away late in the 3rd and win by 19.

If you think Drabek will be the only one getting the ball your wrong. #5 Taylor Grote is gonna be a Jr. this year and he is the BEST Receiver next to Drabek that they have by far. Watch him get the ball as much as Drabek or use Drabek as a decoy for Grote to get the ball. He is a GREAT player!!

Carl, Katy played Judson in 1999 (my senior year).
Again, I expect a loud crowd at Reliant tomorrow and we'll see what happens in the game. As usual, mistakes play a key role in any game and special teams are magnified as well. So, those parts of the match-up shouldn't (and can't) be overlooked.
Dada, Shore-Elsik game is back on for me. Send me a PM.

Yo KT,
I read that we played Katy twice already. We thought they had never played! Turns out we played in 90 & 91. We won both times but times have changed! No More McC and it is now The Woodlands! Hope we can hold the Winning tradition over Katy!! :D

Yeah, I saw that also. I thought we had only played in other sports even in the McCullough days. I remember being up your way quite a bit for baseball.
Good point you brought up about Drabek not being the only option. When I spoke with your WR coach at 7 on 7, he actually compared Grote to Danny Amendola. In fact, I think some of the players nicknamed him "the next 'Dola". There are also a pair of tall juniors to look for also. I expect them to line up in the slots when the Highlanders go 4-wide because Schmid says they aren't true TEs. Traditionally, the Highlanders have run a very efficient passing game and they take more chances under Schmid than they did in the Willig days in my opinion.

Are yo kidding?? I played for Willig for 4 years!! Schmidt takes WAY more chances then he did!! He also has a RELATIONSHIP with his players, that believe me, means a whole lot to a kid & player. To Willig it seemed to be all about business!! That is why he never won a Championship in my opinion! You see the coach for SLC, he loves his players, they are like family, that is the relationship you need with your players to win a state title. I felt I had that with Schmidt even though he was only the RB coach and Offensive Coordinator when I was there. It makes a difference!!

I have no doubt that The Woodlands have more than one very capable receiver, as they always do. It will be a fun match up to watch.

I was trying to be nice about it, :D .
When I watched The Woods last year I kept thinking "where are all these deep balls coming from?" because I didn't see them under the previous leadership. Willig established your program, so he definitely deserves credit for that but I do like the offense under Schmid a lot more.

Whoa Duke - calm down big dude - lol. I'm just wondering who the other receivers are. If you have a couple of talented guys to go along with Drabek -- you could give them fits IMO.

They'll need that running presence to hold the focus of the defense otherwise it'll be tough for the WRs to run free against a Tiger secondary that has the speed to keep up. Again, Katy hasn't had the overall speed they have this season since 2000.
Drabek and Grote are talented enough to give anyone problems, but they still need that running threat established to really cause problems versus the Katy D. Burns is capable of popping the big run, but it'll be interesting to see how the offense does if he's forced to carry the ball around 20 times. Katy's D front is very experienced.
The Woodlands defense versus Katy offense will be another intriguing match up. The Highlanders are looking for contributions from talented young players on that side.
Both teams should be very well conditioned so I don't really expect to see either team completely break down physically unless one team just starts clicking on all cylinders and the other does everything wrong.

Do you remember what Katy and Lufkin were rated when they opened the season in 2003?

DADA4W, I love it!!!! The University of North Shore!! I see nothing wrong with that. In fact I consider that quite a compliment to their program............
Wish I could be at Crump tonight. Can't wait to see how UNS will do-

I'm just bummed that I'm not gong to get to stay and watch it. Once the Consol game is over, we've got plans with the team. That's the problem with going to games with large numbers of family members.... ;)

To KT or Pack fans,
Do you remember what Katy and Lufkin were rated when they opened the season in 2003?
If my memory serves me correctly, I believe Lufkin was ranked #1 and Katy #10 by the AP polls. That was the year Katy took a early loss against Lufkin at Abe Martin Stadium, but eventually went on to beat SLC for the title.
For some odd reason I feel that Lufkin played a small part in helpling Katy win that title.
