LD Bell @ Irving Nimitz
Will most likely decide that 4th playoff spot out of 7-5a.
Neither team is a playoff team and will just get railed out of the first round by Cedar Hill(or whoever they play).
Tonight we held LD Bell to 5 first downs and 130 or so total yards. They couldn't move the ball at all. The thing was, is that they had everything go their way. Last year we had everything go our way to a 42-7 win, but this year everything went Bell's way, plus we had about 20 or so penalties, and they still lose 35-0. We flat out dominated, even our 2nd teamers who we put in during the 3rd quarter outplayed the Bell 1st teamers.
I still think that 4th playoff spot is a bad idea. It puts a team that isn't a playoff team(Irving Nimitz before tonight had scored one touchdown all year or so I was told by a fellow SGP fan tonight, scares me to think they might get in) in the playoffs only to be hung out to dry for the first round.

So is the third spot. 6 champs in 6 classes is plenty.

Yes but look at all money someone is going to make by adding 32 more games in week one of the playoffs.

And that is what the playoffs are really about to the UIL.
And that is what the playoffs are really about to the UIL.
I clearly see your points but as the old saying goes: "There is more than one way to skin a cat." I remember when only one team represented each district, leaving some pretty good teams (many that could have possibly won it all) out because they maybe had one hiccup along the way. I've also seen the other end of the spectrum whereby teams with what could be considered a poor record, go deep into the playoffs...some, very deep. I see it this way, football and an opportunity to enter the playoffs, provides a much-needed opportunity (needed more today than ever) to build discipline and character. And if it can accomplish that (even with a few that normally and most likely would have never had a chance), then maybe its worth it.... Now, the other side of the coin, do I believe there should be a limit? -Yes. Is this it? I can only hope so....

The worst aspect is that many of these games will be the equivalent of a "bye" for good teams. But as it is at all levels of sports these days, it's always about the money rather than the fans........

It extends the season for a lot of seniors at least one more week. That's not a bad thing. Also makes the so-so schools and their fans feel good about the accomplishment. It's all about perspective.

Agree completely! Also gives some recognition to hard-working coaches trying to build/rebuild teams, a play-off opportunity to outstanding athletes playing on not-so-strong teams, and a sense of satisfaction to proud parents who have been supporting their sons' team sports since pre-school soccer and T-ball days. ...hard to find much wrong with that!!!:)

sgp by far the best team we have played this year and it showed. i agree we arent a playoff team but they have earned it. our coaches are really good.
last year however in our district it would have helped since i and many others believe that 7 of the 8 teams in our district last year were playoff teams.

It happened in 8-5a(southwest Dallas and Arlington schools) last year and in 1999.... I remember Duncanville was 8-2 and didn't even go to the playoffs because of of the a log game with 3 other teams. We probably would've went a few rounds into the playoffs that year too..... The 4 playoff rules only benefit a few districts a year (like 26-5a). I think it's a good thing at the end of the day though. I hope they finally decide to get rid of the zero week and let the division 1 and 2 champs play each other in a real State Championship game (now that will make you some money).

Check out districts 11-5A and 32-5A.
In 11-5A, where WT White, currently 1-6, will qualify at a season record of 2-8 if they beat Bryan Adams, who is also 1-6.
In 32-5A, where a Brownsville team will qualify. The five candidates are currently 2-5, 2-5, 1-6, 1-6, and 0-7. Best case is the qualifier will be 4-6, but 3-7 is highly likely.
I know I'm a Johnny One-Note on this issue, but four teams per district in the playoffs is two too many.

one district to prove this wrong is 24-5a where theres a chance for a fourway tie for first. with 4-2 records in district.

One positive about the four teams is that the regular season games tend to mean more. It gives the coaches and the teams something to play for instead of just pride. Maybe more fans in the stands for more games. Not there is anything wrong with that. It may be a problem for round one of the playoffs where some teams effectivley have a bye. So what.

Nothing wrong with them getting a shot at playing at a playoff game.
