Here is the PWHS vs SGHS Story....
Plano West - 26 South Garland - 23
MURPHY – In a game that featured several clutch performances and botched attempts by the special teams, leave it to the kicker to come up with the play that mattered most.
Kicker Brad Namdar made a 35-yard field goal in the third overtime to lift Plano West to a 26-23 victory against South Garland on Friday at Tom Kimbrough Stadium in the season opener for both teams.
After the teams traded field goals in the first overtime, South Garland, No. 16 in The News' Class 5A rankings, had a chance to win in the second overtime after junior Tee Jay Johnson intercepted a pass from Plano West quarterback Reilly Milton. But five plays later, senior defensive back Jordan Pugh blocked South Garland kicker Matthias Slaughter's 32-yard attempt.
That's about the time South Garland turned in its sloppiest series of the game. It incurred two of its five penalties on its third-overtime drive, which ended in an interception by John Pinson. Plano West (1-0) took over and tallied seven yards on three running plays to Chris Collinsworth, which set up Mandar's winning kick.
Plano West capitalized on two critical mistakes in the first half and needed only four plays to open up a 14-0 lead.
The teams traded punts on their first four series before South Garland's ground game came alive. Terry Asante and Phillip Payne combined for 57 yards on five carries and had first and 10 at the Plano West 26-yard line.
But quarterback Lemon Roberts threw an ill-advised pass that Pugh picked off at the 10 and ran back to the 33. Three plays later, Plano West quarterback Bryce Merkling had a 69-yard touchdown pass to Robert Baldridge to open up a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing series, Shane Shead blocked a South Garland punt and downed it at the 1-yard line. Merkling gave his team a 14-0 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run.
A 7-yard scoring pass from Roberts to Terry Asante drew South Garland within 14-7, and Roberts tied the game at 14-14 with a 1-yard run early in the third quarter. Plano West went ahead 20-14 when Milton connected with Baldridge on a 26-yard touchdown pass, but kicker Cameron Irwin missed the extra point. South Garland tied the game with 3:18 remaining on Roberts' 13-yard pass to Joseph Macaluso, but Shead came in and blocked the extra point.

Our QB (Roberts) couldn't get the ball from point a to point b fast enough so that let the DB's alot of time to get to the ball. Also turnovers killed both teams. Plano west thrived off of big plays. And that's all I'm gonna say about that.

Yes, that is very wise. We may be picked for games of the week, be ranked high in the area and state, etc., but we cant get big heads. We can't look past anyone. We need to let South run their course and not care about them. We need to treat every team like the state championship is on the line, even Sachse.

PWSH lost to Rowlett last year in nondistrict. They were much better by the end of the season. I think West wins the game by a touch.

I'm not taunting or gloating, it's not my style, but I think this game brings to glaring light what I was preaching to this board about South and their QB situation. If he had problems getting the ball from point a to point b, against PWest, then it's gonna be murder against the speedy Garland D. Sure, they can improve and get better and even beat us, I know that, but they've raided the JV and they have no compitent QB. The change had better be quick and by leaps and bounds. South caught a break with the NG back getting hurt, let me just say that.

Isn't that the back I saw one up and down the field on that "speedy" Owls D last year at Williams?? Sounds like Garland better hope he stays banged up long enough for ya'll to slip by!

See Rough, we KNOW what a championship team looks like, this one ain't one yet, but it has potential.
All you guys know is how to do is feed off our leavings at the football table of life, and WISH you knew what a champ looks like.
Have a rewarding season. :D
Colonels QB situation looked good, huh?
I'm so sick and tired of bring right again.

Don't know what their QB situation is. My remarks were in regard to handing out championships after one game. As long as you guys can't rack up any more than 29 yards in the air, it will be just like the last 4 years.
Since you are right so often, :p why don't you tutor your big D-Lineman so he can sign with sombody besides Ranger JUCO!! What is big and fast gonna get you working down at the SAK-AND-SAVE??

Making fun of the program and individual posters is one thing, but lets lay off making fun of individual players.
Garland looked good in their game against PESH, but not near a championship level yet. You are right, the passing game will have to get better - potentially, it can. However, all potential means is that you haven't done anything yet.
PS - I saw Carter on Saturday, and they are slinging the ball around like crazy. A lot of their passing came out of their wing T set, too. It can be done.

Funny, when you attack our chain gang of a team, you always stand behind the Colonels like they were your battle shield. I was certain you knew of their deficiencies. When your REAL team starts to win, in 2048, you can quit hiding behind South.
I didn't hand out championships after one game. Read my previous post and you will see how I feel about the team.
If my big D-lineman only gets to Ranger Juco, it'll be better than anyone on your team has done, so don't throw rocks if you live in a glass house.
The jobs at Sack-N-Save are reserved for your guys.

South Garland doesnt stand a chance against Garlands defense this year. Even if they do "fix their little problem" Garlands defense will rip them apart.

Man, I hope Garland's players have not become as cocky as the posters here on the board. Garland played a good game yes, but Garland has alot to improve on.
South Garland lost to Plano West last year and then went on to win the district... so dont get too ahead. South has to improve also, as they did last year after they lost to Plano West.
Who wins, well its who has improved since week 0. And we will not know that till the game is played.
So lets just Congratulate Garland on a good win, and Congratulate South on a hard fought game against a good team. You dont want to open your mouth too early.....

I don't see how we're being cocky at all? We're confident in our team, especcially because we hang out with them all the time so we know whats going on. We just said that we think Garland will beat South? Thats cocky? Im just saying that if you ask me or any of the players, this is the best Garland team weve seen in a while. The players are confident so we will be too.

Its the same thing every year. You see it all the time.
I take back my cocky comment. I just hate to see my fans eat crow for what they have said. I am a huge Garland Alumni supporter... I have seen it too many times where Garland's players get ahead of themselves. Garland always has a great team, its just how they perform. Whenever teams get ahead of whats going on, it always reminds me of the 2002 longview game. Garland came in at 10-0 and #1 in the area. Not fun to leave after a 45-0 killing.
With that said, lets take care of DeSoto!! GO OWLS!

Yea youre right, but Ive really noticed about this team that they are very confident but very far from cocky as well. And we always remind them not to be too cocky even though they are great.

What happened? I leave Garland Lakeview in 1996, when SG was horrendous. We used to bet our F and JV who would beat SG by the most points. Sometimes they were pretty bad, 52-10, blowouts!!
Then 9 years later they're the big boys on the block. What's wrong with this world?
:D
GarlandOwl06
08-29-2005, 08:34 PM
Haha they have gotten a whole lot better but lets not say that theyre the big boys on the block yet...every year they just want to beat Garland and for the most part we still have their number. in the last 12 years theyve beat us twice, weve beat them 10 times!
