Wasnt last year Plano East's first year to use the spread offense? I think I heard/read that somewhere... I think Garland will win, but I think it will be a close game... probably 24-17...

If last year we held Plano east to a shutout, and our defense has only gotten better, whats to stop us from doing it again? im gonna say garland by hopefully 20 but probably closer to 14.

But as I said that was the first season Plano East has used the spread offense... they dropped soo many good passes last year it wasnt funny... after a year, im sure theur are alot better on O, and i think they will put some numbers up no matter how good the D is for Garland... I think Garland wins, but its going to be close IMO.

Yeah, I hope so too. Skyline may be the most talented team we face prior to district. I just hope we're ready in time for district play.

Is Garland still running the wing-t. Do not tell me that sold out too and went to the nauseatingly popular spread?? I do not think nauseatingly is a word but i went with it anyways.
GTown02

No they still use the tried and true Wing-T, but the new OC is going to try and throw a little more than the past... I think they are going to run an offense similar to our 99' team which was a more run oriented team, but had the ability to throw just as well...

Yeah, why not repepat a winning formula when we have the deepest and most tlaented team since our previous state-winning teams?

I think first game for any team is the toughest to predict because you can't always tell whos good or not in the real game. Don't yall think that or disagree?

LOL Lufkin's been running the spread since outlaw came here 10 or 11 years ago so it is nothing new here. I just get sick of everybody trying to do it. Do what you do best the spread is not for everyone. It has been proven over and over that supposed ole school formations still win in today's hs football at a much higher rate then the spread.
By the way, Lufkin held SLC well under the scoring average each time they met. 2002 score 33-30 and slc averaged 50 plus i think??
2004 score 37-30 and slc averaged over 45 i think??
It is not like you guys shut Lufkin out!! ;)

The running game and the D looked great when they weren't subbing....lots of subbing...probably due to the heat. Sloan was 24 for 159 i think.
The passing..........still needs work.

Just got back from the game. Our Defense was rather impressive but our offense lookedlike it may have needed some work. We were fortunate that Plano East got a lot of penatlies because even running it up the middle was minimally effective. EW managed first downs, but just barely. Donte Sloan looked really good, with two or three pretty big runs, but was stopped on the 1 yard line on the first drive of the game. Crosby didnt't have many passing yards, whichwas a bit of a dissappointment to me. He was alright at Defensive Back, but not much of a game changer. Brandon Antwine had some pretty bog plays, and I forgot John Murphy's number, so I'm not sure how he performed. I was pretty satisfied because defense does win championships, but we have to be able to put points on the board.
Last I heard (it was a i heard that whever said that they called them...etc. type situation) South was losing, but not sure how credible of a source that is.
//Edit//
On second thought, the running game was effective, but we had trouble "turning the corner" and i would love to see more running up the middle for big yards, seeing as Sloan is a big power back. He broke some tackles, but I'd like for all of our running backs to be able to do that.

There you go!! wing t 21 and spread 0!! If this was Garland geting shutout they would demand they open it up!! But we will not hear a thing since Plano East runs the spread. LOL A big hallucination is going on in texas hs football. Run what you do best!! period!! Do not try and be something you are not!!

Ok, South Garland lost 26-23 in OT and their rookie QB had 4 turnovers (3 fumbles, 1 INT)...ouch
more news on GHS, murphy laid someone out and was celebrating when he somehow hurt himself. Hopefully it is something minor, but he didnt play for the rest of the night (happened in 2nd half).

For those that don't know, Dante Sloan is a Wing-T fullback. Mostly inside traps, dives and power sweeps. I was there, and didn't know his rushing total. When it was he and the first team offense, there was no struggle up the middle. The passing wasn't bad either. Just not great. The defense looked great I thought. This game could have easily been 42-0 I thought. Just seemed like Jordan was playing a lot of guys, and the emphasis was on getting reps rather than pounding East.

Here is the game summary for GARLAND vs PESH
Garland - 21 Plano East - 0
GARLAND – Smothering defenses don’t win you championships in August. But don’t think they can’t set the tone for a special season.
In as dominant an opening weekend performance as you’ll see, Garland (1-0) unleashed defenders in waves in a 21-0 victory over Plano East (0-1) on Friday night at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
It didn’t matter if it was the first-team or their backups. Garland, No. 2 in SportsDay’s Class 5A area rankings, held No. 19 Plano East to one first down in the first half. Plano East had 31 yards on 16 carries for the game. And Garland defensive backs dropped two interceptions that would have gone back for touchdowns.
“We were real consistent,” Garland defensive tackle Brandon Antwine said. “But I know we can be a lot better.”
The combination of Garland’s punishing defense and power game had Plano East gasping for air in the third quarter. After controlling the ball nearly 16 minutes in the first half, Garland took the first possession after halftime and drove 80 yards.
Garland mixed it up as Tim Crosby completed two passes early in the drive, setting up the power running of senior Dante Sloan, who burst through the middle for a 29-yard touchdown run and a 21-0 lead with 6:56 left in the third quarter. Sloan had a superb opening game with 156 yards on 24 carries.
Garland’s defense established its dominance in the first quarter after Plano East came up with goal-line stand with 4:04 left. With Plano East facing third-and-10, Antwine flushed Plano East quarterback Ryan Noland out of the pocket and forced an errant throw.
After a short punt, Garland drove 35 yards in 10 plays with Sloan scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.
Plano East 0 0 0 0 -- 0
Garland 0 14 7 0 -- 21
GAR - Donte Sloan 3 run (Mladen Bjelica kick)
GAR - Sloan 2 run (Bjelica kick)

Good point, it was hot and he didnt want anyone hurt so he did alot of subbing. Also, no reason to pull out all the tricks in such a meaningless game.

Yea, great pick and return. Lots of guys were cramping up real bad but it was just because of the heat, I dont think it was anything serious for anyone. The defense looked great and so did the running game. The passing game will be there IMO, we're just not showing it yet.

Nice, solid permormance by the Owls. Nothing spectacular, just a methodical pounding. The score could have easily been 28 or 35 to nothing. The passing game will be better, I think. It looked like they really don't trust Hunter to throw the ball much. The two or three series he played featured very few passing plays...
It also could have been 21-7, thanks to the boneheaded play on special teams when the players ran off of the field while the ball was still live after a missed FG. Tim Crosby made the saving tackle after hustling back into position...

The passing game may happen later in the season, but when Crosby threw a couple of passes, he was just plain off target (two or three feet behind people). I dunno if he's just not doing well in physics class, was nervous, or just wasn't on is top A game, but I was a bit dissappointed. It will come, but i don't know if it will be very effective until we need it most (aka the playoffs)

I haven't been keeping up with the Owls as closely as usual but it sounds like Friday was a typical Garland win. No surprises...hard-nosed defense, bruising running game. Why is everyone so surprised with the passing game and Crosby? IMO, Garland is not a passing team and never will be. No big deal, just the way it is. Nothing personal against Crosby, but if Coach Jordan did decide to air it out you would see what kind of passer he is. Which may be why they didn't. When is there a better time to "unleash" the passing game than in meaningless non-district games that are under control. Good win for the Owls...take it to Desoto.
