Besides James Henry at RB....who should we watch out for?
Is it that same QB as last year?
Is the offense going to be the same?
Will the place be packed Friday?

It will be interesting to see....we lost alot of guys from last year. Our defense pretty much dominated last year until the 4th quarter.
How small is the stadium? Do your fans sit on the visitor side also?

Clemens will be more effective passing this season.

Are they going to the spread?
What killed them last year is our D-LINE was blowing the Clemens OLINE up BAD...the QB and RB got sacked a bunch of times behind the line in the 1st quarter.

Last year Clemens OLINE was the worst it has been in I would say about 10 years. Definitely an off year for them

For what it's worth, I've heard the offense is definitely different in that it will incorporate more of a passing game(on purpose :D ). Of course, as mentioned above, I'd be shocked if Henry still doesn't dominate the ball, running or receiving.
It's been said the defense is expected to be comparable to the 99 and 03 units(semi-finals years) and should be the backbone of the team.
Supercentex, no, the visitor's side only has visitors in it. There are bleachers in one end zone for visiting bands/drill teams, etc. Sometimes they sit with their fans when the visiting teams bring small numbers. I'm anxious to see how many Waco fans make the trip. I was very surprised that there weren't more Waco fans at last year's game in Waco. Once again, awesome stadium up there. How many do you think will make this trip supercentex?

Then it's going to be a defensive battle I bet.......our defense is always tough.
We had probably about 3,500-4,000 at the game last year......we'll probably have less than Schertz did in Waco last year.
It's not a short drive.......
We should have pretty close to a full house against Tyler Lee being the first home game...and the Hall of Fame game.

You better get there early, vistor side only seats around 2000 if that. This will be the smallest stadium you will play in all year.

Supercentex, are you coming early enough, or staying late enough, to be looking for a place to eat? There are several at the intersection you'll be exiting at and quite a few more a couple miles later. Let me know if you're looking for something specific.
As far as the stadium, once you turn right off of FM3009/Roy Richard Dr onto Elbel Rd, the visitor's side will be the first one you come to. Visitors parking entrance is right at the bleachers, or across the street at the tennis courts. You can park on the home side, but you won't want to because then you have to walk all the way around as you can only use the visitor's entrance. Unless you want to sit with us, of course. :)

I'm going to use this map on our website http://www.wacolions.com

This is what Waco will be featuring tomorrow night.........
BACKFIELD PLATOON

Winning football games in talent-stacked 13-5A qualifies as a tough job for any coach.
Even Waco High's Johnny Tusa, the envy of other district coaches because of the talent in his program, likes to have an assortment of tools when he tackles the project. With the 2005 season quickly approaching, Tusa has his share of question marks, but he can always reach for a versatile set of running backs.
Like last season, when a stable of ball carriers helped the Lions finish second in 13-5A, Waco High will platoon runners Troy Harbert and Jared Salubi at tailback and bruisers Brian Dugas and Kevin Stewart at fullback.
"I think as the season goes on and at this level we've got to have more than one guy that can do something," Tusa said about the running back position. "It's always been our philosophy to spread the wealth as much as possible and, on any given defense on any given night, there may be something one week that wasn't there the week before either by ability or by alignment."
Entering his 20th campaign with the Lions, Tusa has honed his feel for game situations and part of that means accounting for all the variables. He said, for example, on a slushy, rainy night, it might be better to leave the sharp-cutting running back on the sideline and send out the battering ram.
Good thing the Lions have both.
Harbert, a returning starter at tailback, is the slasher and Waco High's most accomplished ball carrier. He began the 2004 season by gaining 89 yards and returning a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown in the Lions' 31-26 win against Schertz Clemens. At 5-11, 195, he's big enough to run over some defenders, but he'd rather avoid them.
"When I'm in, I have a cut back and a vision for the holes," Harbert said. "Jared Salubi runs straight up."
Salubi, a sophomore who led the Lions' freshman team in rushing, will serve as the yin to Harbert's yang. The Waco High coaches have high expectations for the younger running back, but Harbert's recognition of the dual roles shows his savvy in the offense.
"Troy's got some experience," Waco High running backs coach Pat Gresham said. "He knows what we want him to do."
After a shining season-opener in which Harbert earned H-E-B Classic Offensive Player of the Game honors, he had sporadic success the rest of the campaign and finished with less than 1,000 yards. He split time in 2004 with Ty Ivy, who didn't return to Waco High for his junior year, and quarterback Carl Sims did a lot of the ground work himself.
"I felt like I had to make things happen and sometimes they didn't happen," Harbert said. "As the season went along, I got over the nervousness and I just started breaking tackles and running."
As the Lions break in a new quarterback and continue to mix in more shotgun sets with their traditional I-formation, they might lean on Harbert because of his experience. But Salubi isn't too far behind.
"He's got a lot of speed and has good size for a sophomore," said Gresham about Salubi. "As soon as he feels real comfortable, we think he's going to be real special."
Like Harbert at tailback, Dugas brings experience to the fullback position. Gresham said Dugas is "extremely strong" and plays bigger than his actual size. He and Stewart will probably do more blocking than running with the ball, but the Lions will likely find a way to get Dugas some touches.
"As a freshman he played tailback, so he's a good little runner," Gresham said. “He just catches the ball so well.
We put him in the slot and feel like he catches as well as anyone on the team."
Stewart, a senior, has dutifully played all over the field for the Lions but he moves back to fullback, his position as a sophomore. He spent 2004, his first varsity season, on the defensive side, but Tusa said he's competing "neck-and-neck" with Dugas for the starting role.
Waco High has just two lettermen back on its offensive line, which is a source of concern for Tusa and his coaching staff. But Gresham is hopeful the running backs will make the transition easier for the fresh players up front.
"I think (the offensive line has) enough confidence in our running backs that, if they can get a little block, we can make yardage," Gresham said. "Give them a little room and they can go somewhere."

Yeah centex, that map looks good. And thanks for the story. That killed a couple of minutes off my anticipation for tomorrow's game. Now I have to find something to take my mind off the next 30 hours until the game starts. I'm going to the Steele High scrimmage tonight so that'll kill a couple of hours.
Man, don't you just love the thrill of another high school season starting?! :D

It will be interesting to see what this new OC/QB coach does with our QB play...........we've never had an OC or QB coach. I heard the new QB looked really good in the scrimmage and we'll be running more of a shotgun than in the past of run, run, and run again.
Shifting us to a 3-4 defense will take some getting used to....but I think we have the athletes up front to take care of business..and once the secondary gets used to it we should do fairly well against the pass. That has always been our weakness.
The new OC/QB coach is the one that led Waco Midway to the state semi-finals in 97 and 99.......he then went on to a head coach position...got a team to the playoffs that had never been..and is now at Waco High. So, it will be very interesting.........that Waco Midway team beat Schertz-Clemens in 97 I think? Midway has nothing on the athletes that Waco High has......so again it will be interesting to see.

From the Waco paper:
—— Waco High at Schertz Clemens ——
Don't look at this game as a litmus test for the Lions.
Waco High probably has the personnel to go as far or farther in the playoffs than in 2004, when the Lions lost to Lufkin in bi-district. Waco High opened last season by defeating Schertz Clemens, 31-26, in the H-E-B Heart O' Texas Kickoff Classic, but the scenario is vastly different this time.
Waco High has to travel to the San Antonio area and playing at home versus playing on the road to begin the season is a huge factor. Add to that the Buffaloes returning two more starters on both sides of the ball than they did last season and the Lions' test jumps up a notch.
Waco High has a solid defense returning, led by defensive tackle Dan'Tay Ward and defensive back Chris Johnson. They'll try to stop Schertz Clemens running back James Henry (6-2, 210 with sprinter speed).
On offense, Waco High will hand the ball to new quarterback Brian Smith, who will give the Lions' offense a completely different look than it had with Carl Sims at quarterback in 2004.
“Carl was more of a running back playing quarterback,” Waco High coach Johnny Tusa said. “Brian is more of a quarterback mechanic type of guy. We had to adapt our philosophy.”
Schertz Clemens 28, Waco High 21

Supercentex, in case you didn't get a summary of the game yet...
The Clemens defense looked awesome the first game out. Didn't give the QB much time to do anything at all. Alot of the RB's were getting hit in the backfield by heavy penetration. When the QB did get to throw, alot of his passes sailed high...I'm guessing he had some trouble with the slope of the field, as it's a pronounced slope from crown to sideline for drainage.
The Waco defense played pretty well, too. They keyed heavily on Henry. I don't think he got anything longer than 12 yards at once. The fullbacks were able to make longer runs because of it.
The Clemens offense looked like they just started practicing yesterday. Where was the new, opened up offense??? This unit has a looong way to go, but did wear down the Waco defense SOMEWHAT in the second half.
The Waco offense looked like they just started practicing this morning, but at least they stayed with working on their new offense. This was the weakest unit of the four on the field, but I imagine it'll pay off down the line that they stayed with their new look. A few lumps now will feel much better as they improve the execution.
Overall, you didn't miss much. Both teams seemed nothing like the matchup from last year. In some ways it looked more like a half speed scrimmage. Alot of out of sync stuff like wasted time outs to stop the play clock, illegal substitutions, etc.

I went to the game......Schertz Stadium isn't bad at all....a little on the smallish side but it's nice...you guys made it out to sound like a dump.
Waco offense.......has alot of work to do. That is the smallest line i've seen us ever have.
Schertz offense did well when it needed. By the end of the game the Waco defense was on the field so long they wore down.
Tyler Lee is going to rout us big time.
We actually had a pretty good crowd there for a 4 hour drive........we sent 2 charters full of fans instead of just one that was planned.
