Southlake Carroll, the defending mythical national champion, was unanimously chosen as the top team in Class 5A by voters in the Associated Press preseason poll.
The reaction from Southlake: That's nice, but no big deal.
"Obviously, it's an honor," receiver McKay Jacobson said. "But we try not to get caught up in that [rankings]. That's not going to score any touchdowns or win any games for us."
Added coach Todd Dodge: "It doesn't really matter where you start. It's where you finish."
Carroll's offense should continue to light up scoreboards. Senior quarterback Greg McElroy has scholarship offers from several Division I-A programs despite the fact he has yet to start a varsity game. A brilliant receiving corps is led by BYU recruit Jacobson and Clint Renfro, who led area 5A players in receiving yards and touchdowns last season. And tailback Tre' Newton, who will split time with senior Matt Moorefield, is one of the state's most talented sophomores.
Carroll's defense could also be dominant. Free safety Joseph Agnew (Tulsa) and linebacker Patrick Benoist (Vanderbilt) have orally committed to I-A programs.
No. 8 Euless Trinity, which advanced to the Division I semifinals last season, is the only other area team ranked in the 5A poll.
Highland Park is ranked No. 3 in the 4A poll, four spots above defending Division I champion Ennis.
Celina is ranked second behind Newton in the 2A poll.
