I had an interesting conversation tonight. I was wearing a Judson t-shirt and a guy walked out of the gas station and said he didn't see them up here very much. He's a recruiter for Midwestern and talked about different kids he's trying to recruit up here from the San Antonio area. I told him that D1 doesn't go there very much and skips some good players. He said the Judson players can't get good scholarships because they don't test well enough. He said Fox, Campbell, Harp, and Williams have all had problems scoring well and he'd like to get Harp and Williams up here in February. Fox didn't want to come because he said it was too far and he went to Angelo State. This guy is trying to get somebody from Southwest, too.
It was kinda cool because he said he went to school in Kirby when he was younger and his 2 brothers graduated from Judson. He said he probably wouldn't have played football if he stayed at Judson for high school. His general impression is that Judson teachers just pass the football players and that's why they don't get good scholarships.
See boys and girls, I'm not always pro-Judson and will report the bad stuff too. I have to agree with the guy.

I was reading Friday Night Lights awhile back and it said the same kind of stuff went on at Dallas Carter. They were given credit for just attending class and called it the "School Improvement Plan".

That's sad.
When I was at VHS nothing like that ever happened. Those football players had to earn their A's in class. Most of the football players I knew at Victoria were in advanced classes with me and we would work together on school stuff.
Most have actually graduated from college and some even coach now.

i assume what he said should be seasoned a little. nothing is ever black and white. i suspect every team has its share of academic slackers and brown-nosers who just get by. that coach may be disenchanted for some reason, but i doubt the whole program should be thrown under the bus for the actions of a few.

Well, lonny, don't believe everything that you hear. Fox & Campbell basically blew off their 1st two years of school, then tried to get their GPA up the final two years, but waited too late. Many recruiters also feel that most Judson players because of the coaching they received had reached most of their ability. Harp is an overachiever on the field and in the classroom. Harp did not score in the top ten on the Rhodes test. Currently, Houston has been accepted at Notre Dame, Harvard, UT, A&M, Baylor, etc. Many Judson players have done well in colleges such as Air Force Academy, Kentucky, Angelo State, UT, SWT, Sam Houston, TLU, Clemson, Baylor, etc. His general impression that teachers just pass the players, well, no, but that can be said about any school in Texas. He said he wouldn't play football at Judson, lmore than likely he he couldn't have played football at Judson. San Antonio has traditionally been one of the last places to look for Division I football players.

we have had some football players go to D1 colleges for other things like redwine for track at norte dame.
oh and lonny since i doubt u have been in a classroom with any of the kids you mentioned above id liek to clarify something. The kids who are not doing good in class pass becasue they bust there but. Coach rackely talks to all the teachers and kids who do not perform to the standards he sets have to run after practice then do there homework with the coaches. Teachers dont simply pass athletes.

I have met coach Gaines, he is who you are referring to because i talked to him quite often during the summer and met him in person when i went to the camp. I am one of the players being recruited and my grades are good. I have a 93.7 average and i am ranked 80 of 1139. I can personally gurantee that the football players at judson bust it to pass there classes. I have never been helped out in any of my classes, if anything i have been hurt by being a football player.

theres this website, but i dont even remember it, our teacher gave it 2 us last year, it was pretty helpful for like reviewing before a test or for the exams and stuff, like someone said before, im sure if a player needs an extra point to play or something they get that, acuttaly most people do like lets say passing is a 70, and you have like a 68, 69, and did all your hw and stuff, the teacehr will likely raise your grade to the passing, so they say at the begining of the year..

I didn't mean to incriminate everybody, because I know Judson has players who do very well in the classroom. Mark Koalenz could not get accepted to the Air Force Academy without being a good student. I told the recruiter that the D1 schools pretty much ignore the SA area and that hurts Judson.

Football players pass - busting their tush or not. It has been that way at Judson and just about every other school probably in the world and it is still that way today regardless of what J55 says. Grading is subjective. Heck there are the kiss-up students who get all friendly with say an English teacher and thier work always seems to be graded a little higher - say a speech or something like that.
I know when I was at Judson football players passed that shouldn't have and so did Basketball players - I wish one of them would have just failed - our point guard from the 90 team - we would have won state - or at least been there.
There have also been football players at Judson who are very intelligent and educated. BYU has graduated a few of them.

I hope not. That would make me STUPIDUR than him. I got my grades - I earned my middle of the class ranking. I probably would have been better of had I been failing classes and got coach to talk to my teachers - would have had a higher GPA in highschool so maybe I am the dumb one!
oh yeah - just FYI - last night my twin daughters were in the bathtub and one of them knocked the other one in the head with the shampoo bottle - got a big bump so i was about to take her to the hospital but then I remembered our conversation so I didnt.

nah I wouldn't spite me. It happened last night - twin 1 conked twin 2 in the noggin with the plastic shampoo bottle - caused her to jerk backwards and she somehow landed outside of the tub on the tile - it was crazy. she has a knock on her forehead and it almost felt like a dent to me so I called a friend who is a nurse. I already knew to keep her awake - check pupils to make sure they are the same size and watch her demeanor but I wanted someone to feel the bump - because - well not being educated in the medical world - I would assume that the bump has to swell one way or the other. If it isn't swelling outwards then I would have to assume it is swelling inside which isnt good. I guess she has a slight bump but I swear it felt indented to me. She came over and said she was fine so I didn't take her to the hospital. no vomiting - she is playing eating -- I was just joking because when I was calling the nurse I thought to myself - damn -- dragon's daddy wished this on me to try and prove a point.

Same thing happened to us about 2 years ago. My son was climbing trying to get to the top of Mt. Entertainment System....when Bamm!! he fell off. My wife and I were freaking out. His head felt a little mushy the next day...it was gross. Took him to the ER and the doctor told us it was okay. That it lakgaphoisdpaoghaoeifhpoawe or something to that effect. He survived...but boy was I scared.

I thought conics were easy. We started school yesterday (8-22) and I got homework on the first day of school. But since we are on a block schedule I am going to do my homework tonight. And since we don't start untill 8:06 now, I can stay up later to do my homework. Just a lil' bit of US History, shouldn't be that hard. ;)

I can tell you that Angelo State is a harder school than UT, A&M, and Tech to pass the classes, however it is not as hard to get into. If that is the reason Fox went to Angelo State, he may have problem with the classes. He is going to be a great player for that dump football team I do know that.

Tyler Lee is nothing like this because if we fail or get in alittle trouble, we can't play in athletics. Our school is very discipline I mean many rules we have. But the best one is we don't start till 9 and end at 3:55!

Every school is like this. AP(Advanced Placement) classes don't care who you are, you better give an effort or you will fail. But if you are in a regular class with regular kids then the teachers will pass you because they don't care and the students don't care.

Well, lets see. I started at UT, then finished at Tech. I later went to graduate school at Angelo State. Talking with some transfers from A&M in my department, we all agreed that the work is harder at ASU, than at any of the other 3 schools. This is refering to undergrad work, and talking with people that were attending ASU undergrad. If you miss more than 3 classes in some ASU classes you fail. Yea, thats in the long semesters too. Trust me, it is harder to make the grades at ASU.

Of course this is still just opinions of others. Just cause a school is not D1 does not make it easy in the classroom.

The reason I disagree is because I would think many Universities have classes that will fail students for not attending class. There are also a lot of variables in your original post that may or may not validate your claim. How long were you at UT, why'd you make the switch, what was your major/what classes and professors did you take? Same w/Tech...
It doesn't really matter, I'm not saying Angelo State is a cake walk I just don't think it's quite as easy to say one school is harder/easier than the other. That's like trying to define VY as better than Reggie, or Reggie over VY. Just ain't clear cut...

I see your point, I guess what makes it harder is the smaller, more hands on class format. As for saying one school is easier than another, talk to someone that has attened a school like Sul Ross in Alpine Tx. Easier than grade school.

There is a new beginning at Judson, starting with Isiah Carter. I will bet anything on 6-8 players from Judsun going D1 in these next two years. Bet against it if you'd like but let me warn you and remind you that I predicted Devon Thomas stats as 120 and two td's. Got the score wrong, but was only three yards off his total. So maybe it will be 8-10 going D1.:-)

Quinney is being recruited as a K/P, Maddox #1 is also by a few schools as is #9, the DT. #7 Mitchell will really shine and impress next year, he is a big body reciever with skills. There are a couple other seniors on that team that are possible D1 as well. #3 James is said in one publication as to have commited to Houston and I think that Mendoza, the way he's been running lately has a shot.
