There are some high school seniors that graduate in December. This is so they can participate in spring work outs with the college team that they will sign a scholarship with the following February. Other than that the normal route for a high player will be to graduate in May or June, then take part in the off season conditioning programs at the college they have signed scholarships to play with.

All high school seniors in Texas can sign a letter of intent or scholarship to play ball for a college starting February 1st.

Almost 90% of the time a freshman will be a red-shirt the first year at a Division I school, but lots of freshman get to start and play at the JUCO and Division II level.
