View Full Version : End Of World Postponed, Judson Still Running...For Now

Went to the Judson/Marshall scrimmage this morning and saw what I had expected to see. While it looks as though the Rocket OC has brought the forward pass to Converse on downs other than 3rd and long, running is still the Rockets bread and butter. I was able to watch all the JV scrimmage and most of the varsity scrimmage (left about 10:50).
Offense looked okay, nothing spectacular, but decent for the first real scrimmage of the year. Anyone who says this is even remotely similar to a spread needs to get out more. There were times they had 4 wide, but more often than not they were in a tight formation. I would probably put the playcalling at 75% run, 25% pass. The sets they used varied and looks more like they will be using the pass to keep defenses honest and to set up the run. I am not sure who will be starting the first game, but #44 looked like the better tailback in the mold of a Brandon Williams type. I didn't get a good judge of QB, as the receivers dropped a couple of balls they should have had. Most of the passes were on the mark, but they really need to work on the quick out pattern. The line looked pretty good, I wish they had more drop back passes, maybe they do but are hindered by the QBs? All the passes were either roll outs, or quick hits. Seems like the line is good enough to give the QB some time. Receivers will get better as they get used to the ball actually being thrown their way. Like I said earlier, a couple of dropped balls - that would be chain movers in a game - need to be caught. They have the size and speed, just need to work on the hands.
Defense can be described with one word - aggressive! This is the style of play I am used to seeing from the teams in the early to mid 90's. That aggressiveness can be combated by a good coach, but it is nice to see some fire back in the defense. It is probably one of the taller units I have seen recently, and while the line and backers held their own, the DB's have room for improvement.
Overall I don't think there will be much change in the Judson people used to see and the new Judson. If anything, I would say the Rockets are finally joining the 90's and are trying to keep a more balanced offense which has been the buzzword in college and pros for some time. Judson was never a specialized offense, ie. wishbone or option; instead they just lined up in the power I and ran. Now they are lining up in a couple of different formations and are going to run...but they might pass, too. The defense will be the mainstay of this team, and the offense will decide how far they go.
Saw 6 Churchill coaches and 3 Laredo Nixon coaches. They both play Judson and Marshall, so probably a no brainer on coming to see this.
By the way, thanks NISD for not letting people sit on the visitors side of the stadium with the sun at our backs. Much better to have everyone squinting and sweating on the home side. Making the fans move during the JV scrimmage was a little harsh as well. Most of the fans are parents who took time out of their day to come watch their son play, the least you could let them do is switch sides in between the scrimmages so they wouldn't miss any action. It was your mistake to let them go to the visitors side in the first place right?

You bet.
I was surprised to see the intensity level the same or greater than the last few years. I had figured the influx of new coaches would take a little away from that.

since few coaches get the opportunity to coach at a place with the rep of a coju, they better dang well be excited. most prolly are still pinching themselves.

Thank God!! I can go home and tell my family that the world will not end in a few weeks when Judson plays their first game. ;) Judson and the spread is like saying Whitney and Bobby!! They just do not belong together. :)

JRDaniel, good news...I was starting to think I lived in the last standing stronghold of smashmouth offense :D .
I'm sure you'll get a much better feel for the new flavor on offense here in a couple of weeks under an actual game scenario. Coaches won't show anything outside of the basic package in scrimmages for obvious reasons.

Good point. Is Lewisville still running the bone? I know Garland has flirted with the fun 'n gun, but had their best results operating out of the Wing T. Eisenhower tried going airborne that was a traveshamockery. Luckily, they went back to their tried and true option in time to salvage the season with a playoffs trip. The spread isn't for everyone that's for sure. It's all about playing to the strengths of your players. There is no unbeatable scheme in my opinion.

#44 is Kevin Taylor
Sarters that did not play today. Adolph Perez (OL) and Tony Harp (DB).
QB #5 was Carl Bouldin, QB #15 was Eddie Bermudez, and QB #14 was Andrew McNair.

Is Taylor going to be the starter? I couldn't make up my mind on either Bouldin or McNair at QB. Neither passed enough to get a good feel for their arm. Bouldin looked like he wanted to scramble, McNair looked like he wanted to run.
One area that will be a HUGE dropoff is kicking. I didn't start worrying about parking behind the endzone until Marshall started doing field goals. :)
JV running back #24 looked pretty good during the early scrimmage. Had some size and strength.

I'm not sure if Taylor is going to start. Our new kickers are practicing hard and hopefully they will get better before the season starts(not much time left thought). The loss of Elbel hurt our kicking game a lot.

I'm glad you didn't say Bermudez might play QB. I remember his mop-up duty time last year and hoping he didn't have to play QB.

4 thoughts come to mind:
Marshall is a pretty good team, so it's not like Judson is going to pound them in a scrimmage.
Since it's a scrimmage, Judson will not show what they're going to do. It's just like preseason football.
Not playing the best DB (Harp) and one of the top OL (Perez) shows that they weren't putting a lot of stock into today. BTW, Harp's mom doesn't look too bad.
I don't think Judson unveils everything against Nixon either. I bet they save the good stuff for Cove.

Hector Sobers was playing 2nd team defense. Something between him and coach, should be sorted out by the Nixon game.

it's called out-sourcing. those kids in china working for pennies a day couldn't care less whether it's lee roberts or lee remick, and the us hs grad in quality control slept through the taks testing seminar that mentioned his name. he got the answer right cause the teacher stood in the ne corner of the room. not for sure about any of it, but all probably pretty close.

Dragondad, beleive it or not Carter is actually implementing more passes to their attack. Although they will still run out of the wing T they are implementing the spread into the offense. Crabtree is actually a great QB that isn't just one dimensional. The few games that they passed last year his completion percentages were great. I'm not sure of the stats right off hand but take a look at the Carter vs Lamar game. Wilson allowed him to pass that game and they turned around the next week against Garland and I don't believe they passed but 2 times. Wilson will have a great team this year if he can implement some passing in his offense. This kid can launch the ball and remember I said that if they decide to stick with some passing. Carter hasn't always been smash mouth although the running game has always been solid. They have had some nice QB's. Remember Robert Hall (Texas Tech) and Eric Moore (Oklahoma). Crabtree if given the opportunity, can be among the best as well.

coach wilson seems to have embraced the old royal tenet concerning the pass play. he has opted against the 2 bad options for his whole career. old dogs can learn new tricks, but when the music gets turned up, they have trouble staying away the one that brung them. there is no reason cc can't be successful throwing the ball, esp when teams bring 9 to the los to stuff the run.

I have this article on Carter's QB Michael Crabtree below.
Dallas Carter coach Allen Wilson has used a Wing-T offense throughout
his career to pound opponents into submission. He rotates as many as ten
backs in and out of games to keep people fresh, and big plays are
generated by play action passes and long runs from backs that run track
in the spring.
The approach won him a state title at Tyler John Tyler in the 1990s, and
resurrected a dormant Carter program after his arrival three years ago.
But, as people like to say, the times are changing, and the changes
should benefit quarterback Michael Crabtree
<http://dallasnews.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=39601> .
"We are going to run mostly shotgun this year," said the 6-foot-3,
200-pound Crabtree, who returns for his second and last year at the helm
of the Cowboys. "We'll run four wide receiver sets with one back, and we
might run two back sets as well."
And Crabtree said the changes are just fine to him.
"I like it better" Crabtree said. "I can throw more on the run more and
see the defense better. We'll throw mostly on three- and five-step
drops."
The change has already paid off in a scrimmage against Arlington Bowie
where Crabtree threw for a touchdown and ran for two others, an 80-yard
score and another of 40 yards.
The spread will also give Crabtree another opportunity to showcase his
skills as a quarterback to recruiters across the country, and improve on
his numbers from last season - 30 of 67 for 897 yards, eight touchdowns
and six interceptions passing, and 469 yards on 75 carries and seven
touchdowns rushing.
Not that he needs it in the mind of many recruiters.
"I've got about 15 offers in all," he said. "Illinois, Michigan State,
Arizona State, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Texas A&M and UTEP. I can't
remember them all. UTEP offered a while back. A&M offered a while back
too, like a couple of months ago. All of the are written."
The vast majority of the offers have been at quarterback, but Crabtree
admits that he's willing to try a different position.
"It really doesn't matter. I like quarterback, but I like wide receiver
too," he said. "I want to get out on the field as soon as possible, and
if I need to learn something I will. I'll adjust to the coaching staff.
Location really doesn't matter."
Crabtree is still getting tons of mail.
" A&M, Iowa and Michigan State (the most)," Crabtree said. "They talk
about what their school is all about and what I'll be doing if were
there."
Crabtree also has some favorites.
"Probably USC or Georgia," he said. "I kind of like Arizona State. I
like Kansas, Colorado State and Colorado too."
Crabtree plans to take all of his official visits after the start of the
season.
